smarm52··on “Code was never the hard part” is an insult to all programmers
That is an excellent rage-bait title.
smarm52··on OpenAI’s head of ethics leaves less than a year after joining
Must be tough to do the job when the entire company is aligned against you.
smarm52··on Men's average testosterone levels have halved in last 50 years
Also, aging populations.

There's a larger proportion of older males in the population now than there has been in most of history. Testosterone decreases as we age. The average is across _all_ males, even those outside of reproductive years. I assume if we controlled for outliers, that the results would be fairly comparable across time.

smarm52··on Pete Hegseth's D-Day speech on immigration condemned as 'grotesque stupidity'
No shit? A fascist using a public form to demagogue? What will they think of next.
smarm52··on Programmable artificial RNA condensates in mammalian cells
> These artificial condensates provide a versatile platform for studying and manipulating molecular functions inside living cells.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biomolecular_condensate#As_bio...

> ... thus allowing the condensate to serve as a scaffold for protein release or recruitment.

Neat, programmable cells. Why worry about drug delivery methods, when the cells can be programmed to synthesize novel molecules directly.

smarm52··on Ukrainian drones target St Petersburg in attack Russia calls 'unprecedented'
Not sure why they waited so long. Seems like a simple thing to do to help erode Putin's power base.

> Saint Petersburg is a major trade gateway, serving as the financial and industrial centre of Russia ...

> The Great Port of Saint Petersburg has three large cargo terminals, in Petrodvorerts, Kronstadt, and Lomonosov.

> The federal subject's Gross Regional Product as of 2016 was 3.7 trillion Russian rubles (or around US$70 billion), ranked 2nd in Russia, after Moscow ...

> In 2015, St. Petersburg was ranked in 4th place economically amongst all federal subjects of the Russian Federation, surpassed only by Moscow, the Tyumen and Moscow Region.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Petersburg#Economy

Maybe they took a lesson from Iran and are trying more aggressively to hit Russia in the economy.

Heck, if there's military administration in the region, they could carry out targeted assassinations given facial recognition.

smarm52··on India's surprise baby bust
> But demographers have long shown that what really counts is girls’ education.

Interesting, they mention JUST education as the deciding factor. Would it not be education AND birth control?

smarm52··on Poor supervision is pushing young researchers out of academia
> Bad experiences with supervisors are common among early-career researchers and one of the leading reasons they leave academia, a survey of more than 2,600 researchers has found1.

Huh, I thought my experience was kind of rare.

I found out my supervisor had about a ~10th grade reading level in English. Needless to say, I wasted a few years on my program before I switched advisors. Finished in less than a month with someone with an appropriate level of reading skill. So disgusted, I left the industry.

smarm52··on Larry Ellison: "Citizens will be on their best behavior because we’re recording"
> the fact that the inmates cannot know when they are being watched motivates them to act as though they are all being watched at all times.

smarm52··on What if remote working, not AI, is to blame for weak junior hiring?
The paper:

https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=6787638

Unclear if it's been peer reviewed. The abstract looks fairly convincing. But it is argued against by the majority of research on this topic.

smarm52··on SpaceX to drive a Cybertruck through corporate governance norms
https://archive.ph/ERyCp

Interesting strategies to consolidate power.

smarm52··on The Viruses Causing New Outbreaks Are Less Familiar to Science
Familiar viruses can be contained more easily, and tend not to outbreak.

Thus, non-familiar ones would be the ones to outbreak.

Evolution in action.

smarm52··on Anthropic to release Mythos-class models to the public
I think they already did that on the 23rd.

smarm52··on Canada losing top talent as workers head to the U.S.
They can't be that smart if they're heading into the US now. Concerns about ICE hunting down "furiners" should be enough to give them pause; Especially those that are part of a visible minority.
smarm52··on The Software Coordination Tax: Why Your 40-Engineer Team Is Shipping Like 25
This article could have been a meeting.
smarm52··on Elon, stop trying to make Grok happen
To be fair it does pretty good posts on civitai{dot}red; Just pretend I linked to it (NSFW).
smarm52··on Execs Are Deploying Digital Twins to Do Their Work
So, C-suites are so easy to replace a marketing gimmick can do their work?
smarm52··on Dirty Frag, Copy Fail, Fragnesia: A Worrisome Linux Security Trend
Which happens to occur when Mythos appears on the scene ...

So, an uptick in issues like this isn't terribly surprising. Once they get fixed, the "burst" of issues should subside.

smarm52··on Catastrophe Is Emerging in the Most Vulnerable Places
This is my shocked face. :|

Predicted for years, perhaps approach 50 since initial climate change predictors were first observed and codified.

Also, the most vulnerable with access to the fewest resources always suffer the worst. Which is why the global South with reap most of the problems due to climate change caused by the North.

smarm52··on Elon Musk is going all-in on an unproven technology
...is the name of his autobiography.
smarm52··on The Internet can't stop watching Figure AI's humanoid robots handling packages
What would you call this? Not doom scrolling, doom streaming? A little research gives us:

The Proleptic Wake:

> You void-stream your own obsolescence porn in a proleptic wake — automation anomie dressed as content, bricks going up with a smile.

Where "proleptic" is a real rhetorical/literary term meaning to anticipate something future as if already present. A wake that is happening before the death; Paraphrasing. And "anomie", Durkheim's term for the breakdown of social norms leaving people unmoored.

I also kind of like Doommaxxing, but I don't think that captures all of it.

smarm52··on Storing sunlight in DNA-inspired molecules, released later as heat
If you need to heat things, this seems to be the way to go. And heating accounts for nearly half of global energy demand and is still mostly fossil-fueled (paraphrasing). This means that this puts a big dent in the need for fossil fuel to generate energy. And all without depending on Chinese materials. Note that this is in the very early stages of development; In software development terms, this appears to be in the "alpha" stage.

smarm52··on The IPO wave will enshrine the AI gods' control over the future
Pressing X to doubt

Most of AI advances are built on open source. China loves to undermine the west via open sourcing its content, and reaping the rewards of advances that US companies make. This is hardly a stable state of affairs; "Control" seems far fetched.

smarm52··on Drones reshape war in Colombia as deaths and injuries mount
Strange that the article doesn't mention the possibility of "drone hunter" drones. They don't even need to be very complicated, at least the drones could just grapple the enemy drone(s) to bring it down. Otherwise, they could use a net. They sound cheaper than the explosive ones, and there's a skills overlap with drone pilots that the military would want to train and employ anyway.

smarm52··on It's Not a Mystery Why Fertility Rates Are Declining
> What if they also desire spouses with careers, so that all of the pressure of supporting the family in an uncertain labor market doesn’t fall solely on them?

Good, they almost got one of the big reasons no one has said "quiet out loud" yet: security. Can't have confidence to have kids in an uncertain world.

Also, a kid kind of eats up that second income needed to hedge against uncertainty, so why push for one?

This is also a good summary:

> Years of reporting on the issue have shown me it’s some mixture of more education, which delays fertility, more widespread global uptake of contraception over time, and the fact that it’s more socially acceptable to be childless, so fewer people are pressured into compulsory parenthood.
