smegcicle··on LaTeX Input for Impatient Scholars
texworks from a regular miktex install seems to support it via SyncTeX
smegcicle··on Don’t be spooky
I know you're being sarcastic, but responding anyway.

NPR fortunately also does not make the rules. Refusing to use the word 'spooky' because someone might imagine racial connotations creates those very connotations, while continuing to use it the regular way prevents those connotations from creeping in.

Those looking to be offended, especially on behalf of others, are ofcourse free to do so, and they are also free to be offended at being publicly ridiculed when they attempt to use their cultivated sensitivity to redefine acceptable discourse.

tldr bird respiratory system is very effective, they breathe in one end of their lungs and out the other, always with either a full breath in their lungs or two breaths in their air sacs (one fresh, one ready to be exhaled)

smegcicle··on Why we picture bombs as round black balls with a burning wick (2016)
there does seem to be some kind of push against it, as if it's either triggering to anyone who hasn't seen one in real life, or maybe the ui designer is afraid someone will think they're old and out-of-touch?

the alternative seems to be pictures of folders and clouds with arrows going in and out of them, when the extremely distinctive floppy disk icon unambiguously means whatever form of 'save' is most intuitive and useful

smegcicle··on “Plug and socket”, industry group pushes for "obvious" change in terminology
The idea that only uncivilized societies allow for public nudity is an ignorant and self-perpetuating colonialist stereotype. Not wanting eg your wife to see a penis, especially a feminine woman's penis, is laughably insecure at best, and bigoted and hateful at worst. Similarly, not wanting your assumed daughter to see a penis is harmful to her (or potentially his) emotional growth, and should be considered borderline child abuse.
smegcicle··on “Plug and socket”, industry group pushes for "obvious" change in terminology
fully valid women who were born with penises are 1000x underrepresented in your completely arbitrary 'women' group, therefore should get 1000x weighting to their opinion
smegcicle··on Cellular Phone Use and Risk of Tumors: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
you aren't responding to someone proposing that cell phones cause cancer. they were refuting a weak argument that it is impossible, with an example of one kind of unanticipated interaction that could cause such an effect.

ie, saying that cell phone radiation doesn't cause cancer (or other negative effect) because the radiation is not ionizing, is a straw man- like saying that cigarettes cannot possibly cause cancer because the red glow of the cherry is also of sub-ionizing frequency.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."

how is what you are doing helping? who could it possibly help?

the comment you responded to was written in english- in this language, the word 'english' can be colloquially understood as meaning 'in terms you understand', as in phrases like 'could you explain that in english?', which is not even the point.

claiming that it is 'absolutely the right thing' to crusade against an entirely abstract 'harm' reeks of one who is "convinced of one's own righteousness especially in contrast with the actions and beliefs of others; narrow-mindedly moralistic" -- https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/self-righteous

smegcicle··on Dabrowski’s theory and existential depression (2020)
For those curious about dabrowski's models, take a look at his 'levels of consciousness'†, where he divides personal driving forces into three categories, which develop in order, if at all: base instincts, societal expectations, and a "third factor" of moral self-direction.

This model describes the repeated breakdowns ("disintegrations" in the form of neuroses) that are required to progress upwards ("positive disintegration") toward incorporating this third factor, resulting in a 'true personality' somewhat reminiscent of Maslow's 'self actualization'.

smegcicle··on GPT-J-6B – A 6 billion parameter, autoregressive text generation model
> especially impressed that it caught the "as BS"

what i understand from a completely armchair perspective, is that this kind of context-holding is THE feature of this wave of ai models, which is what similarly allows it to generate paragraphs of prose seemingly out of whole cloth, tracking what it's talking about as it rambles along. the output seems (with occasional glaring issues) remarkably cohesive and realistic, given that it has nothing original to say. I picture it as taking sentence structure it's seen before, and narrative structure it's seen before, and topics it's seen before, mixing them all up, and putting them back together like multidimensional legos- from this perspective, processing the 'import as' lego seems to fit right in.

The whole concept is fascinating, and i'm immensely relieved that we seem to have such a competitive open-source implementation of this nightmare

smegcicle··on Social media is broken – a new report offers ways to fix it
1: i can't imagine anyone trying harder at this than facebook is?

2: marking content as sarcasm completely undermines it's impact. 'sarcasm tags' are unutilized due to lack of purpose, not lack of visibility. how does facebook's 'react emoji' functionality not cover this usecase better?

3: you don't want the human-readable age, you want the exact absolute date, but also the age, which you want to be exposed as color..? absolute date is generally easily grabbed with js, but hidden to reduce clutter.

4: a product to put cross-culture communication up front would be an interesting prospect, but i've not seen anything like that, and i'd expect a full team, many revisions, and a patient and involved community to get functionality and ui approaching helpful...

5: you don't want the exact views and like, you want a human-readable measure for quality that you just came up with and can easily do in your head? (vs how you feel about predigested data re #3)

smegcicle··on Rival weightlifter speaks out on transgender Hubbard's Olympic place
> transmen wanting to play male sports

I don't think it's odd to leave out of the question, since there would be very little opposition to such a proposal.

The argument against would be mostly twofold: 1) it might be 'weird' to have a 'girl' in the men's locker room 2) depending on the sport, there might be an issue of safety

either way, not a big deal- as some other commenter said on here, women's sports is a carveout for a specific demographic (biological females, as if that's in question), and transgenders of all kinds would be much more welcome in regular 'men's' sports, or their own 'hormone free-for-all' programs, than an already established subgroup that does not wish to be so infiltrated.

smegcicle··on I will never not talk about my depression
I wonder if the pt-br words being so similar makes the difference more explicit, that perhaps the english words being so obviously different, makes it easier to forget?

if the topic would ever come up seriously, most everyone would agree that depression is different than regular sadness- but in casual conversation it sometimes seems to warp into depression being a kind of adult form of sadness, almost as if sadness is just for children...
