smolder··on RealPage rent-pricing case wraps with nearly $360M to renters
Those sources are tainted. There is an epidemic of fake listings on websites where once you call to inquire, it turns to a bait and switch where they say the fake apartment is no longer available and tell you "what else" they have instead.
smolder··on Being a kid making games in the early 2000s
I got started making games in Qbasic. That code was horrendous, and is funny to read now. I did learn some lessons through my mistakes, though, and at a young age, which I think was very valuable.
smolder··on Discord is ditching Electron and its new app uses less RAM
There was already an electron-free native client for discord some years back, but they interfered with it. At this point, there's nothing at all impressive about this. It's not hard to ask AI to "RIIR" as has been shown many times. However, I am glad that building stuff on electron might finally be seen as lazy and wasteful.
smolder··on Show HN: After a decade of reversing, I got co-op working in DOS Wing Commander
Back in the early days of video games, it was rare for people to actually beat one. The difficulty was inflated to create long term interest. You didn't just play things from start to finish and watch cinematics while pressing a button occasionally. Playing a game was about mastering it.

So, to game developers in the less-early-but-still-early days, letting people cheat their way through even a single player game was a danger in that it took away the prestige of actually succeeding by normal means. It was a shameful thing to do despite the triviality. To them, getting a high score or completing a game was serious business, and cheating deserved countermeasures. Nowadays people openly cheat in competitive games where it DOES impact other people, with no remorse. I would prefer the extreme where all cheating is treated like crime over the opposite where people are proud of their ability to install an aimbot.

smolder··on US voters roundly reject data centers in ballot measures
> They're generating their own electricity

Yeah, from natgas right? Or maybe diesel generators? Or are they building one of the practically nonexistent green energy data centers?

smolder··on Show HN: I wanted OpenSCAD with fillets and a C-like language. So I made one
I also wrote (often clever) code back when I had to.
smolder··on Nvidia RTX Spark encrypted firmware slows inference speed to 35% on Linux
Well, Sam Altman. He thinks that DRAM in personal computers is wasted and would be better used by AIs that people pay rent to access.

Beyond him, I would bet most of his bilderberg group friends agree. E.g. Peter Thiel, the owner of JD Vance.

smolder··on Nvidia RTX Spark encrypted firmware slows inference speed to 35% on Linux
In China, you can give them a 4090 and have its ram doubled to 48GB with some soldering and custom firmware, so yeah, pretty much.
smolder··on Show HN: I wanted OpenSCAD with fillets and a C-like language. So I made one
"I made" when AI did it for you is quickly getting tiresome.
smolder··on Intel stock collapse worsens as $3.5T chip rout spreads
The stock market should be a mechanism for allocation of wealth that helps the country and the economy. What people have done over the last 50 years is called "a race to the bottom", where everyone puts personal wealth gain over social behavior and teamwork like what made america great in the first place. The moral collapse of the US lead the way to the collapse of it's power.
smolder··on Show HN: Hacker Times, a New York Times-inspired version of Hacker News
It had too high of an influence to integrity ratio, and got infiltrated by motivated actors. That is not an uncommon dynamic. Every democratic forum kind of medium with significance becomes a target for career propagandists and con artists and so on.
smolder··on Show HN: Hacker Times, a New York Times-inspired version of Hacker News
It's cool that you made something, but I don't like this.
smolder··on It's the memory latency, stupid
You're wrong if you are contradicting what is fact, yes. It's also morally wrong to use contrived logic to state big impressive numbers to lay people like you seem to be interested in doing. "We got 100% better performance" when you only reduced latency by half, nevermind throughput, is dishonest. That's the kind of lie you seem to be defending. If I'm wrong then I don't understand the point of your posts.
smolder··on It's the memory latency, stupid
If an object moves across a space 50% faster, it finishes in 2/3 of the time. It's not up for debate, it's not ambiguous. To say anything else is wrong.

> Which isn't 200%, it's 50%.

Okay.

smolder··on Restrooms along the Norwegian Scenic Routes
Except for all the canceled projects like returning samples from Mars.
smolder··on Norway makes shithouses great again
Trump's dream is to have his name spelled in gold on the surface of the sun. He's not smart enough to know it's impossible, though.
smolder··on Restrooms along the Norwegian Scenic Routes
Weird to assume it was forced.
smolder··on Restrooms along the Norwegian Scenic Routes
> I'm still not sure whether Donald himself is just dumb

Yes.

He has failed upward in an insane way. A combination of his petty exploitation of people's good nature and subordinates desperate to be trickled down upon have propelled him to a level of power and wealth he is not fit for outside of his greediness.

smolder··on Norway makes shithouses great again
Our expertise is in privatizing prosperity and socializing losses.
smolder··on It's the memory latency, stupid
50 percent faster is 2/3 time, but yes, prominent people have made this error and even doubled down on it publicly.
smolder··on It's the memory latency, stupid
Something like this happened to me on a very high budget java project. I said I didn't want to make high memory pressure code that performed badly, and the senior guy said the optimization was premature. It didn't matter in the end because they didn't adopt our solution. (They stuck with mainframes, and I don't blame them.)
smolder··on The $6.3B Binance hack was pulled off in just 20 minutes
> Bad banks no longer exist

This is a funny take on things, and untrue. But traditional finance is way safer and better controlled than the crypto frontier. Someone like coffeezilla has to rely on patreon and ad revenue to do the sort of journalism that exposes how debased cryptocurrency finance is. There should be much more money in exposing the fraud, but our premier capitalists are complicit in the fraud. They are fraudsters at heart, which is why they have the money and influence they do.

> Regulations purposefully shrink or destroy markets.

Sometimes maybe, but that's a matter of corruption. Regulatory capture has been used to create regulation that protects monopolies, duopolies, and the broader oligarchy for a very long time. When politicians were representatives of their voters, things worked better. Post-citizens united, the incentives are broken and we have a congress full of duplicitous, self-interested idiots.

smolder··on The $6.3B Binance hack was pulled off in just 20 minutes
> This is why banks are regulated

Yes. Move fast and break things and forget governance... Cryptocurrency has always been dumb. You either con people out of their money or you lose yours.

I had someone approach me in 2017 or so because he wanted to do a rugpull coin operation. I said I was busy and didn't help, but I'd probably be much richer (and a piece of shit human) if I got involved.

smolder··on My favourite PowerMac is a Nintendo Wii
Geometry wars was very fun. I played on PC always trying to top my friends high scores.
smolder··on My favourite PowerMac is a Nintendo Wii
I'll forgive you for thinking Wii was the peak because people are obviously biased based on the time they grew up. For me it was the SNES/Genesis era. Or arguably PlayStation 1.
smolder··on Show HN: To Honor Sir Patrick Stewart, Enjoy the TNG Episode Guessing Game
The thing I shared with people was his appearance in Extras which is hilarious. It proves he can be comedic because he is just that good of an actor. RIP.
smolder··on Ask HN: Are you tired too in this AI era?
The AI era just started. So no, but I would like if we weren't in such a capitalist hellscape where you practically have to eat other people to survive. The world now is grim because of who is leading. Stupid, rich sociopaths have worked really hard to make sure democracy doesn't work properly, crying about "fake news" and lying until the fourth estate is dead. We are in an era of criminal leadership more than ever. I am worried that the potential for massive species-level tragedy is building up, and we're not addressing real problems like resource scarcity and human caused mass extinctions and so on. There is a really bad future ahead when our supposed leaders say "drill baby drill", gut institutions doing positive work, go to war, and support genocide.
smolder··on PHP2Shell: Exploitation attempts and remediation trends
Php was at the forefront of dynamic websites. Early versions also harbored a lot of security vulnerabilities. Php catered to shit browsers in the early 00s. Every single company I have worked with that depended on PHP has been focused on non-technical excellence. It's a bad language. Getting good at using it is a waste, in any state it's been in for 20+ years. Making it work is about appeasing your business overlords and leaving better things off the table.
smolder··on US Government is hiding a secret court ruling about how it spies on Americans
Exactly right. The inutile minority sees it as their job to make a stink. It's all for show when the vote passes. They are not voting independently, they are rounded up before a vote to ensure success or failure. The vote itself is not what determines a bills passage or not, it's all the strings being pulled before hand; the lobbying, the alliances, the bargaining.
smolder··on PHP2Shell: Exploitation attempts and remediation trends
It is an old, bad language and interpreter, so it's widely used and lacks an investment of money, effort and talent. Perfect target for exploitation.
