snowe2010··on New York Times adds more AI features to its Cooking app. Users aren't thrilled
same for believing that 5x to 10x number. Funny enough I posted a comment yesterday saying "citation needed" and got a freaking email from an LLM this morning giving me a source that said there's less than a 20% gain, and that was only one study. I actually laughed out loud because of how hilarious it was. Person on the internet makes a ridiculous claim about LLMs and then I get an email hours later from an LLM telling me that the user was full of shit.

> In the AI era, each engineer can output 5 to 10x as much as before

Citation needed

snowe2010··on Apollo says AI has delivered 'zero financial payoff' outside the tech industry
The highest “intelligence” models can’t even handle basic tasks right now. Saying that only “corporate strategy” and “major decisions” will need those models is laughable.
snowe2010··on Let's Encrypt is adding two additional remote perspectives for domain validation
awesome. thank you for the detailed reply!
snowe2010··on Let's Encrypt is adding two additional remote perspectives for domain validation
not trying to mess with you, the code signing one makes sense to me, but what do you mean by 'apps connecting to their own home services'? and document signing? like DocuSign? how would an OV cert help there?
snowe2010··on Let's Encrypt is adding two additional remote perspectives for domain validation
dealing with this at work now, can you explain the situations in which you _should_ use OV/EV certificates? from my perspective they seem quite useless, even the NSA uses DV, but I don't know enough to actually say that. It seems like there are regulations which might make it required, but I also cannot find any link to anyone talking about what regulations those might be. Just that... "there are regulations"

snowe2010··on I'm the Guy Who Destroys Antique Books After We Scan Them into Our Company's AI
You had to use an LLM to figure out an article was extremely obvious satire… society is doomed.
snowe2010··on Rewriting in Rust
There’s none of those details because it’s an AI written article. It doesn’t even talk about the stuff it says it’s going to in the very first paragraph.
snowe2010··on How Claude's text watermarking works
I thought the same thing. Maybe they can restrict it so that you can’t run the same text through multiple times with only one word differences. At least from an IP perspective that would start to get really expensive to rotate through IPs to get around a block like that.
snowe2010··on “Code was never the hard part” is an insult to all programmers
This logic makes no sense. If 90% of a software engineers job is not coding, then the valuable part of their job isn’t coding. It’s the other things. Else junior devs or interns would be doing all that work.

So no, they aren’t interchangeable with the office receptionist, else the office receptionist would already be doing that job.

snowe2010··on “Code was never the hard part” is an insult to all programmers
I feel like this story just supports the claim that coding isn’t the hard part. Collecting those requirements is harder.

snowe2010··on We Tested Nonstick Cookware: Coatings Don't Need to Look Worn to Shed Particles
Supposedly, yes, but other studies have shown that teflon pans continue to off gas after construction for a long time so it’s not just PTFE you have to worry about, but PFOA as well. And in addition, purchasing Teflon pans increases the amount of these chemicals making it into the soil and water streams so it doesn’t really matter how inert they are when they make it into your food, since you’re consuming them other ways and also destroying the environment at the same time!
snowe2010··on Show HN: Port Zero – How I learned to stop worrying and love PORT=0
Wild to vibe code something in a week then charge $50/month for it. I understand servers cost money but lol there’s no way the costs are that high. Also insane the amount of code generated here.

They have internal tracker blocking. Also, using brave and caring about privacy is rich.
snowe2010··on Study suggests most Americans would be healthier without daylight saving time (2025)
Yeah, it’s insane. Along with that, any permanent gains in the morning will be lost as soon as it becomes normal. Businesses will just open that much earlier. And this study assumed bedtimes of 10pm, which is not the average anywhere on the planet from what I remember the last time I looked into this. The average is like past midnight.
snowe2010··on Why are we so obsessed with lawns?
How is this a counter point? Do you know that their kids don’t like playing in the grass?

snowe2010··on Nearly half of LG smart TV apps contain residential proxy SDKs
Not really. There’s zero reason that a manufacturer wouldn’t just program it to wait several months before attempting to connect to open networks.
snowe2010··on Nearly half of LG smart TV apps contain residential proxy SDKs
Huh? This is almost assuredly being used for botnets… that’s not a good thing.

> The question is not whether AI is useful. It is useful, full stop.

And nukes are useful by some metric too.

AI (llms) is not useful in any way that we as humanity should be pushing for. It’s more harmful than good in every way possible. It’s honestly astounding to me that everyone’s ethics are so weak as to believe that somehow these incredible destructive companies are somehow good for humanity.

snowe2010··on Apple is about to make Hide My Email useless
I know that, but in doing so you prevent yourself from ever using Sign in with Apple
snowe2010··on Apple is about to make Hide My Email useless
But that will completely break Sign in with Apple, which no service is ever going to do. I really don’t get the problem here.
snowe2010··on Apple is about to make Hide My Email useless
But it’s not? Like if they block that subdomain, they will completely block Sign in with Apple.
snowe2010··on LLMs are eroding my software engineering career and I don't know what to do
Am I the only one that has noticed the massive increase in buggy software across almost every domain? Like, EVERYTHING has so many more bugs now. Things just break constantly. AI isn’t one shotting fixing bugs, it’s one shotting making hundreds of new ones every time it writes anything.
snowe2010··on Software Developers Say AI Is Rotting Their Brains
There’s zero chance you know if your code is robust, it’s barely had any time in production. Comment back in two years.

Something degrading because of lack of use is literally the definition of rotting. If you forgot how to multiply then yeah, calculators rotted your brain. If you never knew how to multiply then no. You clearly knew how to write code before and now you don’t. Rotting.

snowe2010··on Software Developers Say AI Is Rotting Their Brains
It’s pretty funny that you don't see the absurdity here. Yes, our physical fitness has dropped. Mostly from cars, much less from public transit.

> Should we no longer drive or take public transit anywhere

Yes? It’s bad for the environment and living closer to the things you do is better for everyone. But not only that, but this has absolutely nothing to do with being a skilled professional. Is walking or running your job?

Yeah there’s nuance to everything.

snowe2010··on Software Developers Say AI Is Rotting Their Brains
Wait, your final outlook on the situation isn’t that the LLM rotted your brain? Are you sure that this isn’t a case of “I refuse to believe I could have done the wrong thing for 8 months”?
