I built for a friend's law office a RAG proof of concept. It sucked. But it was there, so I could have claimed I vibe coded an entire open source legal solution right? But it still sucked, so no (and made me believe RAG is not a useful way at all for knowledge search).
I have the feeling this expectation loss is what triggered the current riots in Western Europe. I'm not talking about the platforms and actors which might be fanning and fueling them, but the trigger which I have seen at work at my kids or nephews - they don't see much hope they can rely on some income, on getting their own house, on feeding their own children. Of course they are young and easier influenced, and I might be biased myself, but I really believe they have less chances than what I had at their age. I won't tell them that though.
I use the AI in the "knowledge worker" way you described. However I still feel it's augmenting my work, because I don't ask or expect it to make decisions for me. I use it to gather sources, to criticize my ideas, to generate summaries targeted to people expectations, and so on. Yes of course it's gonna influence my work with their own biases, but I don't think it is that important - my own biases are otherwise still there...
The eternal way is: follow the money. Not politician declarations or poster designs. The money. I have some preconceptions about it - based on who could profit from a broken EU - but still, follow the money.
AI gets so much diluted by the most important discussions about gendering the toilets and who was first in some valley, so I'm not surprised it slips by without real insight. But to answer your political party concept: the LLM learned their decisions from our flawed decisions, it learned corruption and greedy actions and wrong decisions resulted from human emotions, so I'm honestly not sure what good policy results we can expect from an uncontrollable amplifier.
There was this hilarious scene in a hilarious movie: the bobsled team rehearsing the race in their bathtub (Cool Runnings, 1993). But for real: ski runners do that as well, and I guess in so many others places where there's a routine to learn by heart (katas in martial arts...).
The entire debate is, how exactly can it change. Because I see zero signs pointing towards the rosy future you mentioned, rather contrary. I only see the current AI overlords hoarding power, hoarding money, and the plebs fighting more and more for scraps - against each other or/and later in uprisings against those technofeudalists and their few selected minions. And when the AI gets advanced enough, I see less future even for the minions, and also less chances of the uprising winning against a robot army. Will the humans survive? Maybe, but after a violent culling. And not even that I see guaranteed, depending on the future alignment of the AGI (or whatever it will be called). But all this bleakness is based on today's inaction of the politics/people towards the bad actors, so I really hope we can still steer it away.
Maybe it's what you meant, but let me underline that "local" does NOT mean under your control. As long it's with Microsoft, it will fall under the exactly same Cloud Act, so it can be shut off or copied over the pond on a whim.
The latter is also very far from specifying a calculator. And based on what we see in the "Show HN" projects, also very far from what the average person process is of using AI for generating software.
I have a naive question here: how different are all those business? Does every one need their owl representation? How was it when SAP was modeling every process in the enterprise, wasn't it not already uniformizing enough? Or maybe you mean the value gets lost exactly in those fine deviations from the cookie cutter approximations?
The downvoted comment is actually right: both Netherlands and the EU have mutual legal assistance treaties with the US. Now whether the Dutch legal basis was respected or not, local investigations (including parliamentary) are ongoing so nobody here on HN can really answer. But yes, the transfer can be legally blocked and actually must (and will) wait for a decision on it.
As it happens, pretty much all far right nationalist parties are friendly with Russia. It would take a huge effort to change that discourse, or to build a new far right party from scratch - and now even without russian botnet support.
Are you using, or planning to use, the Enterprise version, and feel like this functionality is missing? Or is the complain about the regular release? I'm asking because I fail to see the link...
I'd love to be able to say you are right, but from what I see right on top, I have very serious doubts. Maybe they are convinced they have better means to protect themselves against that revolution. What could those means be, if not dystopia?
You have a very engineer-like approach, like if you draw the line from A to B everything will work fine. Real world is different though. Humans will blissfully ignore the orders, business analysis is a lost cause since decades, and AI is built on human knowledge so guess what it will keep doing. Now what? How do we build systems without assuming complete adherence, but tolerating imperfection and failures? Isn't there some discipline teaching us that?
Or it's just a flood of comments trying to take the moral high ground without actually helping in any way the cause. I'll call it pure aura farming or something, because I totally fail to see how constant bickering about any fixes is actually doing any fixing. Yes, I'm irritated.
I read the book decades ago, then I lost it in one of the many relocations. I always thought I should buy it again but never acted on the idea... A few years ago, I was walking by an antiquarian, and noticed a thin unmarked gray spine. I entered, picked it up, paid, and walked away.
PS I didn't open the gallery. Nice idea but I don't care about visualizing something I should feel.
For my understanding: aren't "terrorists" meant those who target random bystanders to make a point? In this particular case Altman is no bystander (but his family is).
At least in theory, no AI is making decisions on that - just adding a summary/categorization to the applicant dossier sitting in front of the HR. Now the bigger question is, what does a normal employee do with an AI recommendation? What are you as a software developer doing with the agent recommendations?
While technically possible, what are the chances to be targeted by such a defamation attack? We are not talking some high profile personality, just some Joe User looking for a job.
So you actually agree with us here: you set up an automation, or set up an AI, to plagiarize. You (automation), and OpenAI (AI set up), are correctly being sued. Because none of you thought "do it New Yorker style" also means "do it legally". And no, legality is not optional - even for techbros.
