someguyiguess··on In Leaked Audio, Flock CEO Tells Cops Backlash to the Company Isn't Real
This is the mantra of blue cities too.
someguyiguess··on In Leaked Audio, Flock CEO Tells Cops Backlash to the Company Isn't Real
He isn’t avoiding consequences. Only delaying them.
someguyiguess··on In Leaked Audio, Flock CEO Tells Cops Backlash to the Company Isn't Real
Let’s hope so
someguyiguess··on GPT-6.1 Terra
Right. Because they don’t know. They’re just pumping out crap desperately trying to stop hemorrhaging billions.
someguyiguess··on GPT-6.1 Terra
It’s totally clear. About as clear as mud.

Don’t forget to refill the kerosene tank!
someguyiguess··on GPT-6.1 Terra
No. It’s not similar at all.

The length of your explanation shows just how bad of a naming scheme this is.
someguyiguess··on Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to a quarter of its workforce
Nothing lasts forever. Dinosaurs will die eventually.
someguyiguess··on Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to a quarter of its workforce
Absolutely. Yes they are. To believe anything different is to be a Luddite.
someguyiguess··on Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to a quarter of its workforce
It’s not callous to tell people to stop being lazy. It takes almost 0 effort to type “how does xyz work” into an AI assistant.
someguyiguess··on Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to a quarter of its workforce
I know right? Especially by Microsoft. The pinnacle of code quality!
someguyiguess··on Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to a quarter of its workforce
Let’s be honest, Microsoft never made anything that wasn’t broken, messy, and bloated before AI was a twinkle in Sam Altman’s eye.
someguyiguess··on Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11
You think Hacker News’ design is new? It’s looked exactly the same since I started using it over a decade ago.
someguyiguess··on Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11
Skeumorphism is the opposite of user hostile. Flat design. Now THAT is user hostile.
someguyiguess··on Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11
I just learned that X Window System came out a year before the first Windows release. Interesting. Thanks for pointing out the compiz ripoff. It spurred me to look up the original release dates.
someguyiguess··on Eye of Sauron: Long-Range Hidden Spy Camera Detection (2024)
Eye of Sauron to counter Palantir. Makes sense.
someguyiguess··on Apple and a hacker's future
I'd feel about 100x safer with my child using MacOS than any Linux distro. Linux comes with much more footgun built in than any commercial OS.

> I would never write a 3,000-word article about how bad someone else is because of an issue I caused for myself.

Welcome to hacker news!

someguyiguess··on Apple and a hacker's future
No it hasn't and it's not even close.

someguyiguess··on Why don't more developers “use the platform”?
This is the case with being a zealot for and trying to 100% adhere to any ideology. There’s a very good reason Linux runs on a huge percentage of world server infrastructure and virtually none runs on GNU HURD. The real world doesn’t care if your model is theoretically better. At the end of the day, actually shipping things is what truly matters and strictly adhering to an ideology tends to stand in the way of that.
someguyiguess··on Why don't more developers “use the platform”?
Thank you for typing this all out because I could not articulate this nearly as well as you did but this was exactly what I wanted to respond to that comment.
someguyiguess··on Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel
You kid but AI can absolutely make security professionals far more productive just as it does for other professionals.
someguyiguess··on A brief history of Windows scroll bar shortcuts
My windows button properly handles windows. Window + left arrow snaps left. Windows + down snaps it down. Etc… It’s literally the best default window manager any OS has.
someguyiguess··on A brief history of Windows scroll bar shortcuts
Floating dickbars? What kind of websites are you visiting!?
someguyiguess··on A brief history of Windows scroll bar shortcuts
Sure. Not every computer has a keyboard either.
someguyiguess··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
Keyboard shortcuts on Mac are a lot more consistent than windows and Linux actually. On a Mac command + C / V is copy / paste. In Linux sometimes it’s control + c, sometimes it’s control + shift + c.

Red = stop (close)

Yellow = yield (minimize)

Green = go (grow)

Makes sense to me.

My biggest gripe with windows is it will steal your cursor focus from password prompts. And when it surfaces a password prompt, it does not focus it automatically.

I accidentally sent my password in a Teams chat at work because an Auth prompt popped up so I naturally typed my password and hit enter like I would on a Mac.

Hilarious. But bad UX.

I love MacOS and it’s my primary OS and I couldn’t agree with you more on every single one of your points.

They have not had any innovation in desktop UI since 2005.

I have an iMac G5 running Tiger and the desktop environment is almost identical in every way. Except now it doesn’t look pretty like it did in the Aqua days.
