sonograph··on U.S. Embassy in Kabul Tells Staff to Destroy Sensitive Material and Evacuate
3,000 troops to evacuate an embassy seems excessive? How many diplomats are there?

Nonetheless A terrible situation for Afghanistan; I wish the world could help them but I'm not sure what else could be done after trying for two decades.

sonograph··on Interactive Linear Algebra (2019)
I hope that GATech one day offers an affordable online math MSc program, like their CS program
sonograph··on Abandoned Motorola Headquarters (2020)
I didn't mean it negatively. I wrote it with a smile. They should take pride in their work!
sonograph··on Abandoned Motorola Headquarters (2020)
It is being demolished now. The company doing the demolition must be very proud of destroying things, because they make drone & time-lapsed videos of it:

https://johlerdemolition.com/portfolio-items/motorola-schaum...

Edit: I meant this in a positive tone, not a negative. I'm glad they take pride in their work.

sonograph··on How far could a spaceship go if we never ran out of thrust? (2020)
I actually haven't heard of the Honor Harrington series; I'll look it up. Do you recommend paperback or audio for it?
sonograph··on How far could a spaceship go if we never ran out of thrust? (2020)
(spoiler warning) I gave up on the ExForce series after a half dozen books; it was good, just repetitive. But I couldn't force myself to purchase the Bobiverse #2. While the Bobiverse author's style was irritating to me, I thought the alien interactions in Bobiverse were laughable compared to ExForce and Hail Mary (spoiler sorry). The antagonist also left much to be desired.

But Ray Porter's voice needs to be applied to many more books. I generally only stop reading audiobooks if I can't listen to the reader any longer

sonograph··on NY Governor Cuomo Says He Will Resign
While this is good news for the state of New York, I don't think it meets the site guidelines https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
sonograph··on Launch HN: Financial Choice (YC S21) – Checking accounts with market returns
Putting the Checking account into a fund/security and then selling the fund/security for ATM withdrawals, or individual expenses etc will be a headache come tax time. How does your product simplify this?

From your description, it sounds like this is not FDIC insured?

sonograph··on Ask HN: Is it SV culture, or tech in general that is entitled?
Comparing New York, the midwest, the south, and SV, it's mostly SV that is entitled. NY has this to some extent (finance) too
sonograph··on What Irony Is Not (2020)
> Irony” is a term that everyone uses and seems to understand. It is also a concept that is notoriously difficult to define.

I've always thought this. It's easier to explain irony using examples than to define it.

sonograph··on Powering the Lunar Base
The market for retirees who are willing to pay $100M annually to live in a pressurized bubble on the moon is maybe one or two, for only one annum
sonograph··on One simple design fix for the Olympic medal tally
I would like to se it weighted by the number of athletes sent.
sonograph··on Show HN: Static.wiki – read-only Wikipedia using a 43GB SQLite file
> Sure, RAM is always faster.

Well, why not shove it all into L2 cache and leapfrog RAM?

/first joke I ever made on HN

sonograph··on Facebook is now claiming official CDC.gov links are “False Information”
Same with Google. I searched a covid-related question, and Google's preferred answer at the top was "There is no evidence of this", while the next two links were medical journals that did show evidence that directly contradicted Google's statement.

It amazes me.

sonograph··on Cryptographers unearth vulnerabilities in Telegram's encryption protocol
Collision attacks can still be useful in an attack tree
sonograph··on Ethereum London Mainnet Announcement
> Basically every random walk down the timeline leads to 100% of coins lost in the course of time.

Rather, I believe it will result in the remaining 20% being held by a few exchanges, whose endgame will be to still charge the fees but just balance them internally without actually costing anything.

sonograph··on Protect student privacy: ban eproctoring
I don't follow. Do you mean to say that the calculator would produce .333333333 repeating but the student was expected to write 1/3 ?
sonograph··on NDA expired, let’s spill the beans on a weird startup
Not really. His team paid the price of carrying the burden of his laziness/treachery for a year. If they hired a competent person, they would have been better off.
sonograph··on The James Webb Space Telescope has passed the final mission analysis review
I remember getting excited about this telescope a decade ago. I haven't heard of it since; but I thought it's budget was cut and it was over.

I'm excited NASA is finally going to get it up in space!

sonograph··on Launch HN: Enso (YC S21) – Visual programming and workflow automation tool
This looks fantastic and I'll dive into this more when work abates. Meanwhile, I'm curious if the visual/diagramming framework for the Enso language (on this page: https://enso.org/language ) is open source as well somewhere?
sonograph··on Writing a firmware-only keylogger
I disagree. FOSS and commercially licensed (and sold) software with EULAs are two very different things, and can be distinguished in whatever legal language implements these theoretical liabilities
sonograph··on Alabama Sheriff Legally Took $750k Meant to Feed Inmates, Bought Beach House (2018)
> In 2020 a couple of cities passed laws reinstating the ability for the Sherrif to pocket the money.

Cities or counties? This is a county sheriff and I don't think cities have their own sheriffs typically

I would think that the sibling comment by ignostic is correct though; wouldnt the state law supercede the county/city law?

sonograph··on Launch HN: Turing College (YC W21) – Online data science school
> 17 tech companies contribute to our education model.

Pedagogy isn't something that tech companies are particularly known for, nor hire many experts of.

sonograph··on Cuba′s Covid vaccine rivals Pfizer, Moderna
> This is pretty exciting news. Cuba has a long history of sending medical aid to other developing countries, and right now the vaccine timeline for a lot of poor African countries is really, really bad. If this pans out, it could save a lot of lives.

Does Cuba have the capacity to produce enough vaccines for those nations? That would be really surpising to me

sonograph··on The Broken Promise of Retirement
Off topic: Is it normal for NYBooks to publish things early? Shows as July 1, 2021
sonograph··on Link shorteners: the long and short of why you shouldn’t use them
> ourapp.example.com/s/xO8pR

Wow. And makes it easier to brute-force (Which I think you're insinuating). If the links have an auto-expire of 10 minutes, is the risk sufficiently mitigated? Or am I missing something else?

sonograph··on USB-C is about to go from 100W to 240W, enough to power beefier laptops
After only reading the headlines promising the bright future of USB-C, I am very disappointed now that I carry three USB-C in my backpack for different use-cases.
sonograph··on Universal basic income to be tested in Wales
I don't have the 'correct' answer here, but I think I understand what you're saying. Except the shortage of labor in this case is artificially created. I agree that companies should not be entitled to cheap labor, and I do wish they are paid better though
sonograph··on Was cancer less likely in a pre-industrial world?
Tangent topic;

I have often wondered if back pain was less likely in the past? How did they manage without chiropractors?

sonograph··on Universal basic income to be tested in Wales
> The issue is that they can't find anybody willing to work for the wage they are offering

While this is accurate, it ignores OP's point that they were willing to work for those wages pre-pandemic, but now the government is paying them something equivalent to 'sit around' (per OPs point).

Is it the job of the employer to raise wages or the government's job to pay people to work vs sitting? Maybe we should bring back the Civil Works Administration
