Just a Web Developer that's always looking for ways to make everything run by JavaScript.

spencera··on Git CLI tool for intelligently creating branch names
I think in 2025 "intelligently creating" kind of implies the use of AI but (thankfully) this is just doing a string format based on an issue title.
spencera··on Doubling Down on Open Source
This is really cool, Langfuse looks awesome
spencera··on How to style React applications while the world burns around us (2020)
Deserves a (2020) tag I think, given the regular references to "current times", plus the rate of change in the CSS/JS space
spencera··on Show HN: gpudeploy.com – "Airbnb" for GPUs
I like how signing up requires agreeing to the terms of service and privacy policy, but both links go to empty pages.
spencera··on Turn your picture into a Lego character
Ever so slightly harder to create dozens of accounts to get free credits?
spencera··on Ask HN: LastPass Alternatives
I've tried Bitearden, and it's great (and free) but the best option is 1Password if you ask me.
spencera··on Orkut
Weird, yesterday I ended up at hello.com and was interested by the site... orkut.com has exactly the same layout and "languages: English Português" selector at the top. Coincidence?
spencera··on GitHub incident: 2022/03/24
Everyone do your part! I took the rest of the week off to give GitHub a chance to recover. Flatten the peaks, let GitHub migrate
spencera··on Machine learning driven AWS EC2 scheduler
Worst custom scrolling I've seen in a long time... Completely disabled the swipe-back feature on my MacBook.
spencera··on Elasticsearch 6.0.0 GA released
I suggest checking out cloud.elastic.co if you want a way to securely query Elasticsearch directly from the browser without getting X-Pack
spencera··on Show HN: Chrome extension that shows GitHub pull requests for commit
Yes
spencera··on Ask HN: What is your go-to example for a good REST API?
I also find GitHub to be a great example for API design inspiration

spencera··on Windows patch KB 3139929: When a security update is not a security update
"I spent most of the night trying to replicate this behavior -- a blue banner on new tabs in IE11 with "Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 10" -- and couldn't get it to trigger. If you can, I'd appreciate your shooting an email with a screenshot to woody@askwoody.com."
spencera··on With RAISE Act, Congress Paves Way for Private Secondary Markets
I'm probably not educated enough to say something like this, but "Included within the FAST Act is a section, the Reforming Access for Investments in Startup Enterprises (“RAISE”) Act" is something I hate about how laws get passed.

It feels so strange that Acts can involve completely unrelated regulations.

spencera··on Highland.js
That's exactly what I use, var h = require('highland');
spencera··on Working with the ELK stack
Kibana dev here, also surprised by your experience. I have 1 million web log documents stored in elasticsearch right now, running on my macbook, and Kibana runs quite fast IMO. Would love to debug this further if you wouldn't mind filing an issue on Github.
spencera··on Steve Jobs Introduces the iPhone 6 and Apple Watch
I agree, let the script speak for itself. It's great!
spencera··on Angular-data: data store and caching for Angular.js
So excited to try this out. An Angular specific smart model layer is something I've been wanting to contribute to the community for a while. Thanks for doing much of the hard work!
spencera··on Elasticsearch Raises $70 Million
Want to highlight some of your specific pain points?
spencera··on Elasticsearch – Marvel 1.2 Released
YES! Shard-allocation dashboard!!
spencera··on Reusing require.js modules in Node.js with AMDrequire
Looks like it offers a subset of the features by allowing you to use the same require() function for both amd and commonjs modules.

spencera··on Show HN: PyEQS – query Elasticsearch like a Django Queryset
We are currently working on an official QuerySet-like python library here at Elasticsearch:

spencera··on My dad unexpectedly uses my Linux laptop to get real work done
Interesting. I wonder if your father resorted to the Ubuntu laptop because your Mom refused to give up the mini :P
spencera··on My dad unexpectedly uses my Linux laptop to get real work done
Just have to say, Apple has been working the usability angle a lot longer than Ubuntu and it doesn't seem to be upsetting Microsoft too much. Of course, this comes from a person who has never been able to rationalize spending his own money on a Mac.
spencera··on Release the clients: Ruby, Python, PHP, Perl
Hang tight
spencera··on Sublime Text Ctrl+P Like Fuzzy Matching In Few Lines of Python
A slightly more sophisticated implementation: https://code.google.com/p/google-diff-match-patch/
spencera··on I’m writing my own OS
And amazingly fun to hack on.
