spencerfry··on Ask HN: What are the best MOOCs you've taken?
I'm a big fan of Chris (the GoRails.com guy): https://courses.gorails.com/

Great course.

spencerfry··on We’re sorry, and we’re not rolling out the fees change
One alternative is Podia. We've been getting a lot of signups from Patreon users over the past few days. We don't play games with fees (no transaction fees at all, actually, only what Stripe/Paypal charges). Here's more on the differences: https://www.podia.com/patreon-alternative If anyone wants to give it a shot, feel free to reach out to me (Spencer, the founder) directly in the live chat widget :)
spencerfry··on Podia: Sell memberships, online courses, and digital downloads
Hey all! I'm the founder of Podia. Would be more than happy to answer anyone's questions. :)
spencerfry··on Ask HN: What was your product's biggest marketing win?
Biggest marketing win for https://www.withcoach.com/ has been using our own product to create and promote free content.

Since Coach is an online course platform, we're not only giving people a demo of our product, but we're also providing value through content.

For example, we giveaway a free eBook on selling more online courses & digital products: https://coach.withcoach.com/level-up-your-sales

We also run a free email course on launching your next digital products in 10 days: https://coach.withcoach.com/10-day-product-bootcamp

Both have driven thousands of leads to our product.

spencerfry··on Ask HN: What do you want to learn in 2017?
What about packaging what you know and putting together an eBook or online course? A lot of freelancers and consultants are turning to that to make extra money and to build their reputation. Here's an example: https://courses.gorails.com/
spencerfry··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2015)
We're hiring Engineers and Product Designers at Coach. REMOTE OK

Coach makes tools for tutors to help them promote, build and manage their businesses as well as earn additional income. With Coach, tutors can create their own website, use our scheduling tools to book time with students, create and sell courses with our course-builder and accept online payments.

We’re a fast-growing, New York-based company looking to build our team with passionate, like-minded people who want to help us change the education industry through innovation.

spencerfry··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool?
Thank you!

Good question. The broader idea originally was to "uncover employee happiness" but we've held off on the measure/metrics part of the business to build up the perks/rewards side.

spencerfry··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool?
Yeah. Noted. We don't have a mobile site yet. Lack of resources at the moment, but I hope to do it soon.
spencerfry··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool?
We are using Ruby on Rails.
spencerfry··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool?
Ha. That's actually an employer, but fair point.
spencerfry··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool?
What: https://www.uncover.com

Why is it cool: In the fifteen months we've been in operation, we've never lost a customer. It just gives everyone a smile on their face and that's the type of businesses that I like to work on.

spencerfry··on The Domain Market is a Mess
Yes I did. Legally.
spencerfry··on The Domain Market is a Mess
I completely understand how domain name transfers work. I've done plenty of them. Just because you're a big slow company doesn't mean that we as consumers should just shrug it off as "business as usual". The domain market is a mess specifically for the reason that nobody has built a better solution in ten years. When I purchased https://www.uncover.com back in ~2004 it was the same process as it is today. That's just not right ten years later.
spencerfry··on The Domain Market is a Mess
Looking to see if the domain is listed with the registrar as well is a really great tip. I didn't check to see if it was in GoDaddy's marketplace before purchasing it through Sedo. Next time I'll do that if I find myself in the same position.
spencerfry··on The Domain Market is a Mess
P.S. The best article I've ever read on getting a domain name is the top comment of that post by "Guest".
spencerfry··on The Domain Market is a Mess
Author here. I think Fred Wilson said it best back in 2011:

"I believe that a good domain name is an important success factor in building and launching consumer web services. It's not in my top ten but it could be. It's certainly something we think about a lot when making investments and working with companies post investment."

Check out his article to read his reasoning.

spencerfry··on Ask HN: What'd you do to get your first 100 users?
Thanks! That's awesome. Referrals are our best source of new customers.
spencerfry··on Ask HN: What'd you do to get your first 100 users?
I've grown https://www.uncover.com (a simple tool to give employees perks and rewards) in various different ways. A lot of it began with telling my network of friends who run startups. Getting them signed up. Then getting them to tell their friends how much they liked it. Once that source was depleted, I began to do a lot of content marketing. I started writing for a lot of different blogs, websites, etc. That helped get out name out there and brought in about a third of our current customers. I'm now beginning to experiment with buying ads. It's still too early to tell how well that will work out, though.
spencerfry··on Ask HN: How did you launch your product?
You're welcome. Happy to answer any q's!
spencerfry··on Ask HN: How did you launch your product?
Launching is very overrated. I mainly emailed friends, family, and shared https://www.uncover.com via social media. Luckily, it got picked up by Hacker News and some other outlets. We got some great traffic in the beginning, but a "good launch" alone isn't going to make or break you. It's about the longterm value you can offer your customers.
spencerfry··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool?
I'm working on https://www.uncover.com (an easy way to offer perks and rewards for your employees) with a few other people. We're bootstrapped and making decent revenue in our 6th month. We've got a huge update coming (hopefully) before Thanksgiving.
spencerfry··on A SaaS Startup’s Journey to $100K a Month
Best of luck to you guys.
spencerfry··on Ask HN: How much recurring income do you generate, and from what?
https://www.uncover.com has been up and running for about four months now. We're bootstrapped and doing a bit over $5,000/month in recurring revenue. I wrote a three-month recap on our progress last month: http://spencerfry.com/what-i-ve-learned-since-releasing-unco...
spencerfry··on Adventures in Self Publishing
This was a great read. Funny timing in that I just announced that I've been writing a book earlier today: http://spencerfry.com/i-m-writing-a-book
spencerfry··on Show HN: I learned to code to launch my new startup
Thanks! I go into that here: http://spencerfry.com/introducing-uncover
spencerfry··on Show HN: I learned to code to launch my new startup
Honestly, I don't even count the CS classes (C++) I took well over 10 years ago. I don't remember a single thing from them or any concepts at all. I wish I did as learning to program would have been a lot easier.
spencerfry··on Show HN: I learned to code to launch my new startup
Yeah. I was one of the co-founders/CEO for ~4 1/2 years or so. My other co-founders have since moved the company from NYC to Chicago. They're two awesome guys and doing great things.
spencerfry··on Show HN: I learned to code to launch my new startup
Thank you, Wesley. I'm happy to hear that. We'll definitely make some adjustments to the header portion. It may also be that the copy of some of the reasons aren't clear enough to indicate what the app does.
spencerfry··on Show HN: I learned to code to launch my new startup
It depends on the category, but we provide a convenient CSV file for you to download to calculate any additional taxes.
spencerfry··on Show HN: I learned to code to launch my new startup
Well, to be perfectly honest... I don't remember a single bit from any of those classes. Also, they were in C++.
