splendidfailure··on Fitbit Studio – Web-Based IDE for Fitbit SDK
That's pretty slick!
splendidfailure··on A New Face for Pebble
Even for non-developers, it's easy to create watchfaces using http://www.watchface-generator.de/. Upload a photo, customize your text and download the app to your watch (credit to Paul Rode, a 3rd party developer for this)
splendidfailure··on Pebble Smartwatch Review: A Useful Dumbwatch
You may be pleasantly surprised by 2.0 =)
splendidfailure··on Pebble Smartwatch Review: A Useful Dumbwatch
Most of my pants would fit little more than a few bills or a single credit card, so my phone often lives in my purse. My watch, however, is something that's always on me, and now that it's a Pebble, I get the added benefit of having the important messages from my phone alert me as well.
splendidfailure··on Pebble Smartwatch Review: A Useful Dumbwatch
That's unusual. You should email support@getpebble.com to get an RMA replacement if you're consistently only getting 1.5 days

Please send us a link to your GitHub repo with a Pebble app mapped out ;-)

Fixed
splendidfailure··on Pebble releases SDK 2.0 with accelerometer and JavaScript APIs
In the latest build, you no longer need to #include all of the individual files, #include <pebble.h> is all you need

Palo Alto, but we'll also be hosting some of our open labs virtually for our remote friends =)

We'll also start hosting weekly open labs where developers can come hack with us and get help on projects at Pebble HQ starting in early December. Stay tuned to the blog for more details!
splendidfailure··on Ask HN: How much savings did you have before quitting your industry job?
I wonder how the penalty + income tax from lower tax bracket for the emergency withdrawal compares to the tax that you would pay at the higher bracket if you chose to take it as post-tax income during your employment...?
splendidfailure··on Ask HN: How much savings did you have before quitting your industry job?
I had about $9k and the expectation that I would do some consulting on the side to help out with expenses. I don't think I'd do the same thing again, because consulting ate up a lot of time that I could've been iterating on my project and that became a large source of frustration for me over time.

Interestingly, this also came out today: http://www.davisenterprise.com/local-news/moller-signs-agree...
splendidfailure··on Samsung unveils Galaxy Gear smartwatch accessory
I read that the Sony SmartWatch also supports NFC. It would be interesting to see if a standalone smartwatch app could support NFC building entry (like a replacement for your company badge). It'd be a much nicer form factor and I'd be significantly less likely to forget it at home or at my desk.

Though it's worth noting, with August and Lockitron keyless entry systems being shipped this year, I wonder if the same can't also be accomplished with the existing BLE implementation by Pebble/others

splendidfailure··on Google announces Android 4.3, the latest incremental Jelly Bean update
Excellent! Now I can start buying up those BLE exercise devices I've been eyeing!
splendidfailure··on Female developers as a perk
I like your interpretation. If for no other reason, it would seem to back up the idea that the OP is merely bad with words and was in fact describing the current composition of his team (a team diverse in gender, ethnicities, levels of experience, etc)
splendidfailure··on Female developers as a perk
As a female developer, I wasn't terribly offended by line item #8 (regardless of whether it was intended to imply diversity or it was a joke in questionable taste), but I did find it strange that female seemed to equate to "junior" developer in this context. Did I read that wrong?
splendidfailure··on Why You Should Not Build a Recommendation Engine
I think the author of this article makes a compelling argument for why building a recommendation engine is not an efficient strategy in creating an MVP. I've been working on an e-commerce startup for over a year now (eep!) and after spending countless hours arguing over this exact prioritization with my co-founder, I had to finally call it quits, because we just never got anywhere. Recommendation engines sound sexier when pitching ideas, but at the end of the day, how do you pitch a product that doesn't exist to customers that only exist in theory?
