Not true. Being portable from server to server (even across different file and operating systems) is one of DokuWiki's main goals. All you may have to do is clear the cache. See https://www.dokuwiki.org/faq:servermove

DokuWiki releases come out like every 1 to 2 years. Security hotfixes are rare but always easy to apply (usually you just replace one or two files). Upgrading is more or less a couple of clicks when using the upgrade plugin: https://www.dokuwiki.org/plugin:upgrade

I guess that's up to personal preference. Personally I'm still happy with the default template but people seem to like the bootstrap3 and argon templates

True. There are plugins that add MD support, but I agree, native DokuWiki syntax is much better supported. If you're familiar with Markdown, it won't be hard to pick up DokuWiki syntax, but yeah it's different. DokuWiki is about as old as Markdown, when it was invented markdown was just another unknown formatting language...

One thing that's annoying about responsive images is that the displays with highest density are built into the devices with the potentially shittiest bandwidth.

So on a image heavy site, I might deliver 3x sized images (which may several megabytes) to an top generation iPhone in the middle of nowhere (like rural Germany) on a Edge connection...

I wish there was a CSS media query that would also consider the current network connection.

Hmm I remember it being that easy back in the early 2000s. IIRC it was enough to copy the kernel to a floppy disk and have it boot. Well, back then the Kernel and Busybox fit easily on a single 1.5MB disk...

yeah, AFAIK the MediaWiki people spent a lot of time to write a new parser for their visual editor that creates an AST from the syntax. That should be a much better way to create whatever format you want.

OTOH this is just hearsay and I never really looked into it. So maybe this was the last ditch and OP just did not mention the failed attempts before?

Author here. It's funny how I am writing blog posts on all kinds of stuff for years. Including typical hacker news content like programming or electronics, but it's a wood working article that ends up on hacker news :-)

To everyone having much better ideas on how to build or buy a router table: I'm sure you're right. But this is what works for and was affordable to me in my current situation. If my situation changes I might try one of your solutions.

What do you mean by backlinks are not possible? Do you mean in DokuWiki? Each page has a "What links here" button that shows backlinks - that feature is builtin.

If this is for personal use only, you could also just install PHP from your distro (cli only, not mod_php) and run DokuWiki using the builtin PHP devel server. Low hassle and only running a process when you need it.
