spoils19··on American Cars Are Getting Too Big for Parking Spaces
Curious. Not even a warning, despite the fact that the very users that I'm emulating received warnings?
spoils19··on American Cars Are Getting Too Big for Parking Spaces
Why reword a comment when an enlightened HNer has already written the perfect one?

I checked with some of my friends who had parents that lived in the Eastern Bloc, but couldn't find out anything.
spoils19··on Elon Musk fires a top Twitter engineer over his declining view count
This just seems like the free market at work? Not sure why so many of my fellow HNers have a problem with this. As a fellow user, kamaal, once said to me, I'd love to be there working for Musk and experiencing all he has to offer.

The thing with pick up trucks is that they're actually really fucking practical. For people who want to be self reliant and can afford one, they're a no brainer. You've got one vehicle that can function as a car, a van, a camper van (with a demountable pod) or tow a trailer. They can go off road, and they've got enough power to help other people out if they've got into a sticky situation.

Thanks to that, I doubt everything else you wrote and will have to corroborate it with sources I trust more.

It's crazy that it's slower than an Electron app! Like most HNers, I fully believe that any JavaScript is slower than native, so how can this be false for this app???
spoils19··on Twitter starts limiting how many tweets you can post per day
I was with you until your last word, as infallible, according to my conservative sources, is a liberal dogwhistle.

And, now, thanks to that, I doubt everything else you wrote and will have to corroborate it with sources I trust more.

This is the issue with sewage technology in general. In short, we are not responsible enough. If we were fully responsible as people, we could do it. Once rich countries did it, poor countries would demand it, and they are especially unprepared. A bit of economic and political risk and voila, regions devastated.

There should be a simple rule: if you can't manage garbage, you can't handle sewage technologies.

spoils19··on Python's “disappointing” superpowers
I used to be a huge dynamic languages fan, with python being my favorite language over the majority of my career. Then I worked on a large python project of ~100k LOC with a team of ten. That's when I realized that writing code faster isn't the problem. Reading it is, making changes to code someone else wrote is, and refactoring across dozens of modules is a problem. Static languages help a lot with all three. I still love dynamic languages for small tasks, but I'd rather use a static language like Go which still keeps much of the dynamic feel, and helps catch my mistakes at compile time. I actually just set it to watch the project directory for changes and recompile automatically in a terminal on another screen (actually to run the unit tests, which includes compiling.) That's constant feedback and comparable to dynamic languages speed for edit-compile-test runs. But the best part is the unit tests. They run so much faster with Go that I don't get distracted waiting for them to finish, and that keeps me in the zone and much more productive.
spoils19··on Ask HN: Twitter was unanimously predicted to implode. Nothing happened. Why?
I still feel my discussion being stifled and I'm unable to now contribute curious discussion to this site for the short term. I encourage you to think about your actions here, and ensure that you don't negatively affect the space around you in the future. There's hundreds of eccentric personalities on this site, and watching your conversation in the future will only bring positive results.
spoils19··on Python's “disappointing” superpowers
I support you ReflectedImage - seems like these people just don't know how great dynamic languages can be! My team has actually seen a 30x decrease in bugs, and a 50x increase in productivity ever since switching to Python.

> you want to predict his failure

I never predicted anything - please make sure you source your claims.

> incredibly stupid to claim he's stupid

Again, please source your claims. I haven't seen others claim he's stupid (sorry, I don't watch the news except here, and that kind of news doesn't cut it here)

Additionally, I don't think it's following the HN guidelines by discouraging others to share their unique viewpoints. Remember, the site is for _curious_ discussion!

Overnight? Sentiment has been largely changing, for my own circle around the pedo comments, but for others much sooner.

It's amazing to me that people seem to be influenced by such a small group of people, and people just follow along!

Interesting. Would you be able to list all of those that are not for profit? Just trying to make an informed decision, and I don't trust my google search - would rather get it from a fellow HNer.

spoils19··on “In roughly two hours, 1647 devices are about to be wiped”
I disagree. In conservative companies, it would be common to meet in person and give a firm handshake, before taking out the required documents from a briefcase. It's sad to see this tradition evaporate.
spoils19··on “In roughly two hours, 1647 devices are about to be wiped”
That is universally true.
spoils19··on Ask HN: What is it like working on a large dynamically-typed codebase?
Pain. You write endless tests to ensure that you cover for all types coming into critical code paths, but you can't cover for all of them. At the same time, you have no guarantee of the type of something like a function argument, so a huge amount of time is wasted if you accidentally misread or assume the wrong type.

Data scientists giving me code and not telling me what Python libraries they are using or which dataframe to use has caused a week of headache, personally.

spoils19··on Memphis police release graphic video of Tyre Nichols’s beating
Law enforcement is one of, if not the most, riskiest professions in the world - moreso than loggers, fishermen and even pilots. The stress that comes with that job is unpalatable - we should be saluting our community's law enforcement rather than scrutinizing them. Try to guess again.

I think we should do something to hold those customers accountable. If corporations are people and we hold them accountable, why not customers who lie?
