staplor··on Meta Muse Glimmer – open weights 30B local coding model
What do you mean iffy? The major AI labs are gross profitable when selling access to inference. In addition, the best models have trillions of parameters and are most efficiently served on large, expensive clusters and served to many concurrent users.
staplor··on Waymo in Dallas
It is unfortunate, but we're still in the early days of AV's. I think that more cities and states will be amenable to them once they have proven themselves as indispensable.
staplor··on Gemini Robotics 2 brings whole body intelligence to robots
Would you mind expanding on the difference between frontier model development and open model development? I was under the impression that they were nearly the same thing and would thus be handled by the same team. My impression is that open models tend to go through more safety testing and are generally smaller, but are otherwise the same thing. Shouldn't most of what is commonly referred to as 'AI research' be applicable to both?

hot glue is a petrochemical just like plastic.
staplor··on Starship V3
Shouldn't we be able to detect radio coming from SAR satellites? If SpaceX were to launch a cover SAR constellation, why can't they just use starlink as an excuse, why do they have to invent a new businessline?
staplor··on Grand Theft Oil Futures: Insider traders keep making a killing at our expense
If you consider 'trading' to be short term buying and selling of stocks, then yeah. Holding stocks long term is nothing like trading commodities though.
staplor··on Hyperscalers have already outspent most famous US megaprojects
I’ve had similar thoughts, but I’ve come around to this buildout being rational. All of the big ai labs are still jockeying for compute and are having trouble keeping up with inference demand.

staplor··on Ford CEO: Tesla's Cybertruck Is Only for 'Silicon Valley People'
The linked article just looked at collisions that happened and compared danger by vehicle weight. If I had to guess, I would assume lighter vehicles generally have a shorter stopping distance and hit pedestrians less.
staplor··on Ford CEO: Tesla's Cybertruck Is Only for 'Silicon Valley People'
> The authors find that being hit by a 1,000-pound heavier vehicle results in a 47 percent increase in the baseline probability of being killed in the accident

staplor··on Gaming the system: How GameStop stock surged
> The argument to allow second user sales of computer games is that it drives first user sales.

Digital games have their own benefits — sales. If games can be resold, one person may buy a game and then sell it to another person. With non resealable games, both of the people in the above example would buy the game later in a sale. Sales are one of the best uses of price discrimination; practically everyone gets to play a game eventually if they want to, but those who especially want to can pay more.

> So, Netflix should only allow one person to watch the screen at a time, and everyone in the room watching the tv show needs to purchase an account, or maybe a pay-per-view watch?

I don’t see how my statement implies this. Single use tickets and subscriptions services are different things.

staplor··on Gaming the system: How GameStop stock surged
I think it makes sense that video games shouldn't be resold. Do you think you should be able to resell a movie ticket? I don't because I see the purchase of a movie ticket as the right to see a movie once. In the same way I think purchasing a game should give you a right to download a game from your account.

Hey, Dang, Idk if this is allowed because this is politics, but I thought it was a noteworthy thing for a world leader to do. However, I understand if you want to delete it.
staplor··on Hacking Grindr Accounts with Copy and Paste
Yes, but even if the referenced security risk is patched you would still be able to find out if some has an account or not since a password reset page will tell you if it has successfully sent an email to an account.
staplor··on California to Require All New Vehicles Be Zero-Emission by 2035
It is the governments job to deal with this. Polluting the atmosphere may be cheaper for an individual consumer, but is a negative externality for everyone else on earth.

If the government didn’t involve itself in any green energy, Tesla would not be profitable.[1]

staplor··on U.S. Supreme Court deems half of Oklahoma a Native American reservation
You should look into Ernesto Miranda. He did horrible things but the Supreme Court said that he incriminated himself without knowing his rights. Because of this, his conviction was overturned and now cops have to read ‘Miranda’ rights to everyone they arrest.
staplor··on Micromort
This is pedantic, but going twice in Russian roulette would have an 80% mortality rate. This is because the second shot is a 3/5ths chance, not 1/2.
staplor··on Show HN: Virus Cafe – Make a friend in 2 minutes
Piggybacking off this, if you are the teacher from Saudi Arabia, send me an email. address in bio.
staplor··on Radioactivity in Tobacco
I believe it would since cannabis also has sticky trichromes on its bud and surrounding leaves.
staplor··on French court rules Steam games must be able to be resold
I think this is bad; not necessarily for the consumer, but for the industry as a whole. Reselling means that copies sold after the release benefit random consumers, not the developer. On the other hand unresellable licenses along with sales mean that everyone pays the same price, but the developer gets all of the revenue. Digital goods cannot be scarce; we shouldn't treat them as if they are.
staplor··on A Navy Seal's Semester at Yale, at Age 52
Yes, it is more likely for a serviceman to die in training than in combat.
staplor··on How the Library of Congress Unrolled a 2000-Year-Old Buddhist Scroll
I disagree. What's the point of having a scroll if you are unable to read it? Now it is in a form(digital) to last another thousand years.

staplor··on Arbitrage and Equilibrium in the Team Fortress 2 Economy (2012)
I would say a decrease in players. TF2 still had a strong playerbase but it isn't what it was 5 years ago.
staplor··on Nike Says Its $250 Running Shoes Will Make You Run Much Faster
I don't think the relating running shoes to motors in bikes is a fair comparison. Motors in bicycles add energy to the system; running shoes simply allow a runner to be more efficient.
staplor··on Finding an Alternative to Mac OS X – Part 2
Check out the program Infinality. It has settings for different rendering methods including one that mimics OSX. It works great for me although I will admit that I am not one who notices this stuff easily.
