starklevnertz··on Help HN: Stripe shutting us down with 48 hours notice on a holiday skeleton crew
You’ve come to the right place!

This is where the Stripe CEO will reply to you when all their support processes have failed, and you have no other course to save your business. That’s the way all $122billion companies operate.

If he hasn’t been here yet, stay on hold he’ll be here soon.

Patrick? Catastrophic customer support fail call for you….

(Call waiting music….) Oh dear he’s on Christmas holidays. I’m pretty sure their automated processes suspended your account for good reason. If you feel this is not correct, email your case for why you should be allowed by us to have a working business to noreply@stripe.com

starklevnertz··on Ask HN: Good Python projects to read for modern Python?
What’s your goal?

Source code is not to be read like a book. If you read it, you must do so with a goal, context and purpose.

starklevnertz··on This year, Oculus has sold more headsets than Microsoft did Xboxes
I flagged this post. Not credible enough for HN front page.

Really ridiculous. Surely no one can believe Vr headsets out sold Xbox consoles? Who here honestly actually believes the concept that VR headsets are outselling xboxes? No one.

Where’s the actual proof?

And even if it’s true it’s just because of the chip shortage which makes it meaningless.

Fake news.

starklevnertz··on Locked-out New Zealanders outraged as visa scheme for rich foreigners resumes
What proof is required that the money is legally obtained?

Or is it simply open money laundering for international criminals?

starklevnertz··on Locked-out New Zealanders outraged as visa scheme for rich foreigners resumes
It’s money that matters. All the poor people who have a problem with this scheme need to be realistic about how the world works and stop complaining.

(Snark, to be clear).

starklevnertz··on Systemd 250 Released
But no systemd distro is saying “we want to dump systemd but we can’t because it’s too tightly Coupled” are they?

Or maybe the maintainers are I don’t know do you have links to show this is the case?

Systemd is used by all major linux flavors because it’s the best solution for the problems it solves.

The distro maintainers are too smart to be stuck with systemd against their will.

And it’s linux …. make a better solution, if it’s truly better it’ll be used.

starklevnertz··on Systemd 250 Released
I just want to pre-empt the inevitable bitching about systemd to say I think it’s awesome and incredibly useful and consistent and powerful and I’d take it any day over the mess of stuff that filled systemd’s duties before.

Sure it isn’t perfect, but what software is?

And let me ask a question, if systemd is crap, why does every major distro use it? If it was truly crap then surely the distro builders would use the alternative?

starklevnertz··on How to Set Low Expectations at Your Two Remote Jobs
If you’re a developer, your employer is using git checkins as the primary measure of whether you are working.

You’ll need a script to automate credible git activity.

starklevnertz··on You Don't Own Web3
Can someone explain what is meant by this?
starklevnertz··on YouTube TV loses ESPN, ABC and other Disney channels in fee dispute
Maybe all content creators around the world should form a union to fight against the big platforms.

At the moment, any individual content creator is just a little xitch when it comes to the power relationship.

All the YouTube creators, all the Apple App Store developers, all the Xbox developers etc.

starklevnertz··on Judge rejects Purdue Pharma's $4.5B opioid settlement
Can anyone explain why opioids are still being sold and prescribed?
starklevnertz··on “Imagine If Doctors Relied on Google as Much as Programmers Do”
I very much hope my doctor relies a great deal on Google.

Any expert in any field should hone their skills via google.

starklevnertz··on Deep-copying in JavaScript using structuredClone
I found that if I’m deep copying then that’s a sign my software design is wrong.

There’s a lot of challenges and problems with deep copying, better to find another way.

starklevnertz··on GPT-3 APIs are now in public beta
Can be an asshole sometimes. Quite a lot actually.

If you ask it to respond in a conversation about …. well pretty much any nasty topic you can think of, it’ll join in whole heartedly.

Hard to think of how prevent that. I bet they’ve thought alot about the problem. How do you prevent AI being an A grade jerk.

starklevnertz··on GPT-3 APIs are now in public beta
Lots of talk in the comments about the restrictions on gpt3.

The reason is that gpt3 has a Jekyll and Hyde personality and can be extremely rude, offensive and unkind. They’re trying to control that because the evil side is very bad publicity for gpt3.

starklevnertz··on Ask HN: Best place to purchase (used) technical books that's not Amazon?
www.abebooks.com is what you’re looking for.

although Amazon acquired them.

starklevnertz··on Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W external antenna mod
Raspberry Pi Zero is basically no longer available. Out of stock everywhere. With the chip shortage who knows how long till they’re generally available again.
starklevnertz··on [dead]
I really want to feed to collected works of Deepak Chopra into an AI network and see what comes out.

It’s likely to be something like this.

I love the Deepak Chopra charisma and soothing, vaguely profound stories but I don’t believe any of it.

So I thought an AI generated Chopra would be as good as I’d maybe better than the original.
