Because that's what they observe the executive management performing for multiple employers simultaneously and the definitional difference between salary and hourly wage.

Ok, hegseth
steele··on Behind the scenes at the NeXT Computer office
Working with people in person died proportionally with corporate laptops featuring wireless telecom. Not because of the mobility, but more because of the collapse of the otherwise natural modes and boundaries.

steele··on Xbox Turns Down Netflix $500M Offer
Can you explain the comparison of sports with fictional narrative?
steele··on Xbox Turns Down Netflix $500M Offer
Red vs Blue is pretty great
steele··on Xbox Turns Down Netflix $500M Offer
Netflix saturating the landscape with poorly executed adaptations of Microsoft owned media properties is almost certainly not worth the short term dollars for long-term erosion of their perceived value, especially without some certainty of securing complementary title launches. Given the shuttering of studios to right-size for the cambrian explosion of slop for COVID era hardware, Xbox probably wouldn't be able to make that capital work for them any better than sitting on licences until they accrue nostalgia.
steele··on America has lost 200k of jobs in media, film and the arts. How much is AI?
Boomers gonna boom
steele··on New Apple TV 4K
One of the products you mentioned is named Home View. It's right there. Both new SKUs ship with their voice assistant interface to Google Gemini (and friends) in an environment where memory and storage availability is being monopolized by cloud infrastructure.
steele··on Leaving Tech
I think \ real sentiment \ gitgud .

If the author had this developed this level of certainty in the face of profound gaps of information, they might as well just apply to jobs disguised as a post-singularity AI escaping their sandbox exclusively to remotely co-work with you in particular!

steele··on Thinking will become a hobby
The internal motivations involved with communicating these ideas at all are among many other factors preventing author from willfully ceding their remaining days to subsist on the minimal appeasements allocated at the labor zoo of one of the luckier sociopathic oligarchs.
steele··on Ask HN: Do you want a router that has DD-WRT pre-installed?
Yes. With upgradable radios.

steele··on Gleam doesn't compile to Erlang source anymore
You're doing fine. English grammar pedants speak infrequently. Mostly due to the disinterest of the listener.

steele··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
US has been procrastinating reparations for slavery. LLM redistribution can't happen until the capitalism machines recursively solve "sins of our fathers".
steele··on Bob and Van
Firearms lobby, institutionalized prejudice in law enforcement, Justice system, etc all have made this additional labor of the marginalized minority extraordinarily dangerous.

steele··on I were 17, I'd learn how to build LLMs from scratch
I assume in this hypothetical Cornell just gives away degrees to passersby.
steele··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
State-sponsored propaganda apparatus masquerading as marketing optimization to influence LLMs is the most America-coded clandestine dystopian way of repatriating US taxpayer defense dollars with R&D deductions for the private sector.
steele··on U of Michigan drops first-semester grades to ‘curb mental health crisis’
Michigan admissions create opportunities for students that found success within the challenging conditions. Umich treats the problem by educating future policy makers about those systems. Then occasionally yields to powerful lobby groups and clandestine operations of fascist administration.
steele··on What is happening to jobs? Separating AI hype from reality
"conscious parallelism" across knowledge worker industries to suppress wages and further alienate laborers from the act of production.
steele··on Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta warn against overregulating open-weight models
We demand that possible all avenues to observe, replicate, and resell exogenous value remain uninhibited until ROI and monopoly is achieved!
steele··on It's getting harder to focus every day
Socially adroit undergraduates suiting up to exchange dead tree resumes at job fairs in exchange for the URL to online portals can definitely benefit from taking air breaks when/where recruiters do. No need to engage them to unless prompted, it's corporate Switzerland, but there is comfort in recognition on both sides of the booth.

steele··on When can a power company take your land for data center infrastructure?
Is the nuance you're contributing here substantiated in the proposals being discussed in the article?

Transmission lines emit EMF which seem pretty harmless unless you're a pollinator or migratory bird. Maybe the home owners are just making a fuss so they can get a better payout to improve the amenities in the bunkers that comprise their subterranean community of concrete beneath the barren badlands of the over-world. At the very least, they should ensure respirators and gaussmeters for able-bodied coal miner minors.

steele··on When can a power company take your land for data center infrastructure?
Throw around NIMBY as a pejorative until you're blue in the face. Landowning residents have a civic duty to exercise their interests to prevent the remote monied and powerful from packaging their speculative investments as valuable infrastructure when the profits are privatized and the losses are socialized. The gambling addicts aren't going to spend a single day in prison when neglected overbuilt "infrastructure" directly causes mass casualties or pervert the shape of communities spanning generations.
