stevage··on Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance
Well their annual revenue is estimated around $14 billion.

It seems better when it's on an exchange like Binance, because they cover you when it gets stolen.
stevage··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
I would expect every phone I buy to be the best phone I've ever used. That's how technology works, isn't it?
stevage··on What we know so far about Spain train crash
That is not how the procedures work, so the driver would be fired as soon as they did that.

Every train network has situations where drivers are authorised to proceed against a red signal. Not usually at full speed though.

stevage··on Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
Which "today's news" are you referring to?
stevage··on Dessa: Conversation Model trained only on speech
Wait, seriously, a rack of 72 GPUs costs $4 million?
stevage··on Dessa: Conversation Model trained only on speech
It sounds good, but...what the hell is it talking about?

The "Huge range in intonation and speed." example. "I had another ollie special". "I ordered a French vanilla latte, special from Maude [or is that Aldi?], springs and waffles, granny smith"...wtf does any of this mean?

She takes a sip of something and her "mouth is on fire...from all the sugar". She repeatedly calls herself "a ding".

stevage··on Show HN: OnKey – I'm a bad singer, so I built an app to show where I'm off-key
He was also terrible at free throws.

It's weird how famous he got.

> These requests do go out:

> Shazam (Apple): a short signature of the music app's sound, not the audio and never your mic, to name a song OnKey hasn't learned when the music app doesn't say what's playing.

> LRCLIB: the song's artist, title, album and length, to fetch lyrics.

> iTunes Search and Lookup (Apple): an artist and title, or the ID Shazam returned, for covers and the song's length. The cover images come from Spotify's, Apple's or YouTube's image hosts.

> GitHub: a check for a new version a minute after launch and once a day, and its download.

I really appreciate this level of transparency. Wish it was the standard.

stevage··on Upcoming critical PHP security release (CVE-2026-109618 / -109619)
Fortunately not everyone on the planet sleeps at the same time
stevage··on SimCity, but with Permits
Not sure what the "this" is that you think zoning didn't "solve" exactly. Where I live (Melbourne, Australia), I think zoning does work pretty effectively. Industry builds in industrial zones, houses and apartments get built in residential zones. Fortunately (I think) the government is generally on the side of increasing the density and changing the rules to make it possible, so we don't have a San Francisco type situation where no one can build anything because the residental lobbies are so powerful.

The pain points for us are to do with attempting to increase the density of the city, which means building apartment buildings where there used to be just single story houses with backyards - something those residents don't like. Or the complexities of big projects like new train lines, that impact an awful lot of stuff around them.

But in general, a lot of stuff is getting built, it's just expensive.

stevage··on Show HN: High-quality duck audio synthesizer
The strangest thing axout your post is the lack of curiosity about whether or not bread is, in fact, bad for ducks.
stevage··on Norway Eyes Partial Ban of Smart Glasses
Making them completely non functional? Even in private homes?
stevage··on Norway Eyes Partial Ban of Smart Glasses
It probably also is. But easier to enforce at the time of capture.
stevage··on We ported the original Doom to SQL
Not necessarily in real time though
stevage··on In the wake of Tippett Studios’ closure, a digital archive appears online
Why don't you just assume good faith when someone says they don't understand. There was no need for this.
stevage··on Powerless F1 drivers frustrated by Bahrain F1 software glitch
I have a friend who has worked in aerodynamics at several of the F1 teams. The parts themselves are pretty high tech, but all of the management of the data, the processes, the software to produce them etc is pretty shoddy.
stevage··on Tank Body Problem
On mobile it doesn't seem to be possible to decrease power?
stevage··on A brief history of Windows scroll bar shortcuts
Yep, something happens immediately. Something different happens later.
stevage··on Meta VR Glasses
I get that there are people who are into this stuff, but honestly, I can't think of a single use for myself, unless the movie watching experience is really, really good.

I'm never going to wear a thing like this in public, and at home, I have my laptop and TV. The TV I'm usually watching with someone else, and this is worse than the laptop...so what's my use case?

stevage··on A brief history of Windows scroll bar shortcuts
IMHO it should be long hold. Click to jump by a page towards the click location. Hold down to jump all the way there.
stevage··on I don't want to read what you didn't write
It's a super common writing and speech pattern.
stevage··on Truman World
Yes, I don't want to know what the tools are. What...is it? What's the goal? How is one meant to interact with it?
stevage··on Truman World
How does this work? I couldn't find an about page?
stevage··on I don't want to read what you didn't write
There's nothing AI about that sentence.
stevage··on We got admin access to Baseten's production GitHub
So many security breaches involve Linux in one way or another. Your argument doesn't really work.
stevage··on We got admin access to Baseten's production GitHub in 25 minutes
Suing is not what you do when someone commits a crime against you. You're confusing civil law and criminal law.
stevage··on The biggest dinosaurs couldn't sit on their eggs
You mean paleontologist. Finding new fossils is a tiny part of their work. Mostly it's analysing existing fossils, general research and teaching.
stevage··on Predictive intelligence to anticipate anything.
Well, it says you only get one prediction per week.
stevage··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
Why do you keep reporting them, when clearly that does nothing?

And since, as this article points out, Google does not need reports if they actually wanted to block such ads, it seems completely pointless.
