You can find a way to use that to your advantage. I do "robotic" stuff when I am foggy. All that stuff that I would otherwise find super boring. Doing the dishes, cleaning up, doing repetitive tasks that has a low attention requirement is perfect.

Probably similar to the NYT subscriptions surge during the Trump administration. People just buying to signal and "support the cause". Partisan views have it a lot easier to raise money from their followers than those trying to find a middleground.

I am only talking about the US situation here and treating the situation as if the Guardian were a US publication. That whole 'foreign media trying to meddle with US politics' narrative has reached an ironical meme status that is not worth arguing over any more.

58.9% of Americans voted last election. Has the Guardian already lost that much touch with reality to accept that those 41.1% of the population exist who don't care about their outrage theater?

What they are doing is advancing the politicizing of everything and driving an agenda of divisiveness.

Why is an artist is not allowed to be an artist anymore but needs to be an political activist?

Even worse, because TS doesn't follow the Guardian's absurd logic, they are trying to shame her with their imaginative interpretation.

That's not journalism, that is a 6-year old's fantasy world, who dreams up stories about celebrities and why they are their imaginary friends/enemies.

No, they are assuming that everyone must have an opinion. It seems outside of their reality to accept that people don't care about the things they care about.

Just because I don't voice my opinion on which days I prefer the garbage collection truck to arrive doesn't mean I am a big fan of them arriving on Monday. I just have other things in life going on.

Wow, I haven't seen that before! Just stunning how distorted the Guardian's editorial board has become.

Their hatefulness must have become so deep seeded that they are unable to tolerate anyone out there who does not wanted to get instrumentalized by their 'either you are with us or you are our enemy' crusade.

But if you understand how the system works and it seems not surprising that you will face tougher challenges. I am not sure in how far this is different from rejecting the notion that a driving license is necessary to operate a car. You can certainly learn how to operate one yourself and be really good at it. But if your are a car rental company and want to reduce your liabilities it seems reasonable (but probably not fair) to let only people with a driving license rent one.

But isn't that the whole point? That unless you are doing certain things to the extreme, they might be good or bad. That things as complex as health are rarely shaped by just one isolated variable.

I am absolutely against that exam culture so I like that suggestion a lot. The exam perspective is just completely artificial which has nothing to do with the real world. That project based approach mirrors the real world much better where you can compensate for almost anything just by rising the effort one is putting into something.

Thing is, in that industry being known for bending the rules is most likely a badge of honor. If you really want to go after them you need to use their tactics back on them, e.g. drag their families out of anonymity etc.

Obligations and also the expectation of "intention". Just doing things without intending to become an expert of it or using it for some sort of more "purposeful" purpose has become so rare.

In regards to the ranking - one of the most important rankings for international Universities is the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Methodology section: http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-ranki... this factor is measured by the ratio of international to domestic students and is worth 2.5 per cent of the overall score.

German Universities have a big issue about ranking performances, case and point giving certain Universities a Government issued "elite" title.

As far as I know this has been mostly about boosting "diversity" quotas at German Universities in order to perform better in international rankings. Previously this had been done by rising the amount of students coming from low-income regions (e.g. ex-Russian territory, Asia), so it is certainly a welcome change to see US students making use of that system.

Wasn't there once some sort of experiment of admitting a random sample from a college application pool? Couldn't find it on the spot, but I think it had some similar results to the PhD admission experience. It also does make sense from a armchair psychologist standpoint: The one being admitted on weak grounds will probably put in a lot more effort to keep up with the class/competitors than the one having always some other, similar options to fall back on.
