stillhere··on U.S. consumer protection official puts Equifax probe on ice
We should never forget that Equifax first tried to charge consumers for a freeze until consumers complained so loudly that they were forced to give it for free. They clearly have no respect for their consumers and show/flaunt it. Legislators have failed to deal with this issue in a modern way. We need to assume that every American is compromised and freeze accounts by default.
stillhere··on James Damore has filed a class action lawsuit against Google
In my experience the left was not capable of having reasoned debate even before the election. They prefer to shut it down.
stillhere··on Software development and screen readers at 450 words per minute
Though I'm not blind I would imagine it is like speedreading. Occasionally skipping words has no effect to the main idea of a sentence because the mind fills in the blanks. Anyway disability related tech news is very cool stuff and I hope to see a lot more on HN.
stillhere··on UX brutalism
Regarding brutalism: I think Prince Charles said it best, "You have to give this much to the Luftwaffe. When it knocked down our buildings, it didn't replace them with anything more offensive than rubble."

You're free to make your own comparisons to whatever you want. He obviously likes women. Woops.

stillhere··on Google Fires Employee Behind Controversial Diversity Memo
It's not a manifesto. It is an opinion on how to make Google better and confront its biases. They are always looking for ways to improve but PC is beyond what is acceptable to look at.
stillhere··on Unlearning the myth of American innocence
The cold war was not cold. In Africa it was red hot. We see the results there today of communism's spread.
stillhere··on Generate energy with kites
What happens when: there is no wind, a flock of geese crash into it, the cable snaps, etc? Better keep these things away from buildings or it will be like 9/11 all over again from multiple angles.
stillhere··on Why I left Academia: Part I
>When the day of my defense came, I got to campus early—far too early—and spent most of my time perched underneath some monument to a long-dead white man while chain-smoking and obsessively texting everyone I knew.

No reverence for the dead or their legacy or any help they provided.

stillhere··on For software that is cross platform and accessible, forget about Qt
JAWS is what a large number of blind and low vision people use. Just because you're not familiar with it doesn't mean it is "some proprietary" thing that should be ignored.
stillhere··on Stack Overflow Sunsetting Documentation
You'll become a better programmer in the long run if you take the time to resist Google and read books/manuals. Unless you're on a deadline I guess.
stillhere··on Larry Page Deposition in Uber vs. Waymo
>If you're going to buy a company or something, you would do more thorough diligence. >When you say "more thorough diligence" what do you mean by that? >I don't know.
stillhere··on Launch HN: 70MillionJobs (YC S17) – Job board for people with criminal records
Why buy a domain name for a number that will fluctuate over time?
stillhere··on America’s Competitors Angle for Silicon Valley’s Business
The notion of "good" or "bad" all depends on what you value. If you value the economy above all then this is good for companies outside the US, bad for companies inside the US. If you value jobs for your own citizens over money then opposite is true: better job opportunities for locals, bad news for corporations (at least in the short term).
stillhere··on Uber drivers gang up to cause surge pricing, research says
ADA non-compliant vehicles as well. Disabled passengers cannot ride an Uber most of the time. It has been difficult to sue Uber though.
stillhere··on First Human Embryos Edited in U.S
Seems like a more socially acceptable form of Eugenics since society seems to value advanced science more than it does traditional mate selection based on desired physical traits.
stillhere··on BTC-e and its founder charged in 21-count indictment over hack of Mt. Gox
They even put government agents from other countries on their most wanted websites: https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/cyber/igor-anatolyevich-sushchin

I'd like to see them try to extradite this guy. LOL!

stillhere··on Sperm Count Dropping in Western World
I would not call modern society "Western". It has deviated far too much from its traditions.

stillhere··on Pseudo-public space in London
>I'm sure you can guess what he looks like.

Homeless?

stillhere··on Pseudo-public space in London
Suppose the land was private buildings turned to private park. Seems dystopian to me since it seems public but it is not. No public protests can be had near the MegaCorp for example.

They are going to capitalize on it, make no mistake.
stillhere··on US Household Debt Surpasses 2008 High
I know someone who went to NYU who now makes $15/hr and is $90k in debt because they majored in media studies. I am not trying to make fun of them as I love them but they believed and still legitimately believe the lie that going to an Ivy League should have been enough for them to live comfortably. Problem is that doesn't matter when your thesis is literally based on playing Second Life. Not that there's no value in her thesis but the reality is people are not hiring for that.
