stiray··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
The simple answer is: any

Smart TVs are just a normie alternative for what tech enthusiasts were doing for 30ish years: put a computer next to the tv and use it.

Alternative, get yourself something capable of running Moonlight (https://moonlight-stream.org/) and run Sunshine (https://app.lizardbyte.dev/Sunshine/) on your workstation, I am even playing games this way. RPI 5 works great, also libreelec (https://libreelec.tv/) is excellent and has Moonshine plugin.

You buy a TV, NEVER connect it to the internet and set up small computer next to it. Obviously not Android based as it is spyware on its own.

Then use it. It is that simple. No special methods, software, whatever needed, tv becomes only a large monitor for your computer conveniently placed in living room.

stiray··on Patrick Stewart has died
I think that we are both well aware that the statement was not about "Candy Crush" or "Louis XIV". As the "America's poor have a higher standard of living than medieval kings" was not about technological progress.

Some more thoughts for you: since 19xx workers are productive to the scale of 10x (feel free to downplay it to whatever factor over 3x as this is the minimal amount, everyone agrees on except of those that harvest the difference) against those times. But we are still working 8/8/8. Who takes the difference? Of 10x (or 3x)?

stiray··on Patrick Stewart has died
> America's poor have a higher standard of living than medieval kings.

False Equivalence, Red Herring, Chronological Snobbery, Fallacy of Relative Deprivation, Contextomy.

So, by this logic, a homeless person with a used iPhone is better off than Louis XIV (who literally owned all of France) just because the king couldnt play Candy Crush?

This statement confuses global technological progress across centuries with an individuals actual financial security, social power, and quality of life within their own modern society.

I simply just cant understand why would someone repeat such a statement (and I have seen it everywhere).

stiray··on European Alternatives
Why would we? There is HN, works well, respects our privacy, doesnt abuse its users, so why would be any need for EU alternative?

I fail to see your logic, are you claiming everything American is bad and should be replaced?

As I really dont see it this way, I am using HN but on the other side I will never use Facebook.

And if there would be such an abusive site as Facebook in EU, I wouldnt use it either.

stiray··on European Alternatives
It is simple, if all the American sites would be respective to people as HN is, there would be no need for this topic. It is not that we are anti American people/sites/software, we are anti policy on our data or/and abusive practices. Why it doesnt bother Americans is beyond my comprehension. Or why you understand it as anti American.
stiray··on AI: EU Member States plan "digital expropriation" of Europeans
I thing that the issue is Ireland. Corporations are avoiding their taxes there and they are earning a lot from corporation entities registered there.

This is literally money grab from their presidency in EU, on the expense of all EU citizens.

> But then again if the EU was working for the good of EU citizens, we'd know it by now.

And we do, we have GDPR.

If someone needs it, https://github.com/Fuzzy-and-Fluffy/windows-keyboard-for-mac

(to replies, yes, i understand that macos keyboard shortcuts might objectively be better, but if you are using multiple computers and macos is the only one of OSs, those shortcuts become pain in the neck)

stiray··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 7.2
I hope they will support M4 soon, I cant stand macos and its desire to be different than everything else by custom keyboard shortcuts etc.

After 2 years of usage, I still have issues with basic actions like copy paste.

edit: omg, writing this post, i checked if there is some way to use linux shortcuts and there is (Kanesh/KMonad or Karabiner-Elements). Maybe my suffering will finally stop.

stiray··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
Just to clarify bluetooth situation: https://forum.sailfishos.org/t/release-notes-pispala-5-1-0-1...

/*

The AppSupport Bluetooth Bridge shares the phone’s Bluetooth controller between Sailfish OS and AppSupport. It acts as a router, so each Bluetooth device can be handled by either Sailfish OS or AppSupport without handing the whole controller over.

For most devices this is controlled through pairing. BLE devices are more complicated, and that is one of the areas where broader testing will be useful.

For now, you should reboot after installing. The Bluetooth settings page now has an extra option to route incoming pairing requests to AppSupport. Devices found during scanning also have a long-press context menu option to pair them with AppSupport. You can see devices paired with AppSupport on the same page, and you should also unpair them from there when needed. Turning Bluetooth on and off in Sailfish also turns it on and off in AppSupport. You should not try to turn it on or off from Android apps.

Android apps that are designed to pair with devices internally should be able to do so.

If you have previously handed Bluetooth completely over to AppSupport as described elsewhere on the forum, revert those changes first. Otherwise things are likely to break."

*/

I hope it helps.

stiray··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
I bought Jolla Phone 2026. Was thinking about Pixel 10 and another round of GrapheneOS, but changed my mind.

Was using Sailfish OS on Sonys phone but drove me nuts for two reasons:

- had to reverse banking up to kick out the checks each time when new version came out and I became quite proficient at it (decompiled into git and each new version over it, then git diff, and fix the checks, committed the changes)

- worse part was that there was no bluetooth to android bridge and local bus company required it for contactless paying

There was nothing I missed from the phone, even reversing banking app was not really an issue, but bluetooth was just needed.

I defected to GrapheneOS after two years, now I am moving back, I hope for good. The fixed the bluetooth while for hardware I dont care.

I have solved the banking app issues by changing the bank and getting cheap old pixel just for banking app. It doesnt even have SIM, only wifi and used Automatize to turn on airplane mode on lock screen and turning it off for unlock.

I dont care about NFC payment or any other android junk, for photos I have EOS and phone just doesnt cut it, while camera is good enough for taking shots at everyday things like shopping list.

I really hope I wont need to see android ever again.

stiray··on Measuring developer productivity with the DX Core 4
I would like to present DX team another metric.

It is called "not wanting to work in a company that is insulting me with measures like metrics, spying on screens, squeezing every drop of sweat and exploiting its workers for already huge profit.

My last job change was exactly due to company acquisition by USA company that started to exploit everything work related, removing wfh, ruining life-job ballance,... And who leaves first? Those who can.

So you are not really measuring developer productivity but helping company get rid of most productive people, while all others stay.

stiray··on Akse3D – open-source 3D modelling anyone can master
Was preparing a rant about CAD solutions being free as long as people didnt get hooked and then closed behind paywall with ever increasing price.

Then I see that I can self host it. This is interesting novelty.

But there were so many bad apples in CAD area, that I will stick with FreeCAD and after 20 years, if this will evolve and prove it is just not another scam, happily give it a try.

stiray··on Show HN: Number Gacha, a gacha game distilled to its essence
The game was changed so now you can use Q, W, E for battle, much, much better.

Meanwhile some things just dont let me sleep... it was more fun while decompiling games and trying to understand a logic in good ol' times...

(function() { let itbe = 99999; let rawSave = localStorage.getItem('gacha'); let decoded = atob(rawSave); let saveData = JSON.parse(decoded); saveData.clubs = itbe; saveData.spades = itbe; saveData.hearts = itbe; saveData.diamonds = itbe; let reEncoded = btoa(JSON.stringify(saveData)); localStorage.setItem('gacha', reEncoded); location.reload(); })();

stiray··on Show HN: Number Gacha, a gacha game distilled to its essence
Interesting game, but the battle is absolutely ruining it.

Opened everything possible, I still have 3 locks to open, battle at 2001 (level 6), the attacker movement is just too fast to be able to react.

Would be probably doable by keyboard but with mouse I just closed the browser tab as with 3 more locks to go, it just doesnt make any sense to even try.

stiray··on I returned to AWS and was reminded why I left
Amazon is bad at their blocking of accounts. They blocked mine for no reason (want me to call some USA phone number which I wont) a few years back and I was writing down everything that I would buy at their store, but I bought it elsewhere.

They have lost 3785.90 euros in sales due to their idiotic anti-user war.

Not to mention of all bad reputation that I gave them.

stiray··on Zuckerberg 'Personally Authorized and Encouraged' Meta's Copyright Infringement
It actually depends on evilness of the company. Elsevier is just less evil that Zuckerberg and Meta, while publishers are even less problematic. I dont think there is anything funny in that.

Or anything to defend on Meta. If they go out of business, humanity profits.

stiray··on IPv6 just turned 30 and still hasn't taken over the world
All those discussions are making it harder than it need to be.

I have ONE static external IPv4 for my network.

I can handle everything I want with it. And block everything I dont want my network to be.

So I just disable IPv6 on router (Mikrotik).

Not interested, not wanting it. That is it. If someone needs it, feel free to use it. I wont support double configurations on my router because of it.

stiray··on Jolla Phone Pre-Order
Sure, I am not complaining about that. Again, Sailfish OS is great (!!!!!), no doubt about it. Unfortunately, I need a daily driver instead of carrying 2 phones with me.

Once Jolla will understand that, I am prepared to get back. Until they don't, they will need to find users elsewhere. I can ditch a lot of bloat from my life, but unfortunately, ability to use public transport is not one of them.

stiray··on Jolla Phone Pre-Order
I am on Graphene OS now and they will really need to think of something revolutionary to get me back. No, nice GUI is not enough for all the years I have lost, desperately trying to adapt. Now, think of the normal, everyday user, not prepared to even buy a specific phone release for Sailfish. And this is how they will lose users. I consider this as constructive criticism from my side.

Believe me, I am in front row, for wanting the linux to succeed against bastardized OS as android is. But the wrong decisions are just wrong decisions, there is no excuse to it.

stiray··on Jolla Phone Pre-Order
They can support passtrough for bluetooth and NFC. It is not something they need to invent themself.

I cant emphasize enought how this feature is of most importance for my daily life. At 48, I am using either the bicycle or public transport for my daily commute (for 30+ years!). I can workaround it by buying a NFC card each month but very typically it is not available without considerate walk time. Not to mention banking app, but I have covered it by reversing and patching it. How many users will do that?

It is not my fault, that the world is as it is. But not supporting real life scenarios is certainly Jollas fault.

stiray··on Jolla Phone Pre-Order
Support for vital features needed for normal life is a must. And all available resources should be put into it as it is making their OS viable for usage. No android application support, no users.

I have struggled for 2 years. Most users wont.

stiray··on Jolla Phone Pre-Order
This is nonsense. They cant force vendors to support them, so the only viable strategy is to support the vendors. And they can, but they decided not to.
stiray··on Jolla Phone Pre-Order
I wouldnt recommend it.

TLDR: while the OS is great (really GREAT), the real-world compatibility is not.

I had Sailfish OS for a daily driver for two years, and OS is great (let me say that again, Sailfish IS GREAT!), but there are "the details".

Jolla is completely ignorant to needs of their users. While they do have an android layer, they are ignoring to things that are of huge importance for daily life, like bluetooth passtrough, and are important due to daily needs, for instance, bluetooth passtrough is really important for using public transport here.

FFS, I was reversing banking application and patching it to be able to use it. And actually became very good at it :D

Here is a bluetooth feature request thread, that is open for 5 years: https://forum.sailfishos.org/t/bluetooth-support-in-android and being blatantly ignored.

And lets not get into details, like NFC.

So at the end you will have a great OS, incompatible with the whole world. After 2 years of suffering, I ditched Sailfish, bought Pixel and installed Graphene OS.

Once Jolla starts to listen to their customers, they are on the path to very real android contender, but unfortunately they just dont understand, that people need some features, they are not providing while the vendors wont support some exotic OS. They need to adapt, not vendors - the whole thread is full of this mentality.

The android "container" was a step into right direction but they just shouldnt abandone it and keep on supporting it, adding additional layers of compatibility.

I really hope they will change their mind at some point and prioritize compatibility, would love to ditch android and its spyware driven ecosystem completely, but sadly, Graphene OS + NetGuard is just a far better alternative until Jolla stops behaving like an infant. They are literally sabotaging themself in a worse possible way.
