stochastic_monk··on Show HN: A Modern C/C++ build tools (Simple, Fast, Cross-platform)
There's also Snakemake, which is mostly used in bioinformatics pipelines, but it's sort of like a Makefile program with inline python enabled.

It's nice and I could imagine it getting some adoption because of its flexibility, but my C++ projects tend to have their needs met with Makefile.

stochastic_monk··on Dealing with China Isn’t Worth the Moral Cost
It's a reasonably valid point. During his administration, right-wing autocrats the world over have been emboldened, and he hasn't spoken against them. See, for instance, Khashoggi, the Kurds, or the Skripal poisoning incidents in recent memory, or, more to the point, the promise that Trump would say nothing of the protests in Hong Kong if he got his trade deal [0].

You're being downvoted, but while it's not a direct cause and effect, he has supported and encouraged authoritarianism the world over.

stochastic_monk··on Intel slashes prices in face of AMD competition
Thanks! I've written code for discrete GPUs but not integrated, and so I'm unsure what the advantages would be. Would there be lower latency for transfers, then, if not higher throughput?
stochastic_monk··on Intel slashes prices in face of AMD competition
Would the GPU have its own RAM or simply share address space with a CPU?
stochastic_monk··on Why It’s Hard for Startups to Create Wealth in Europe
That sounds much less onerous than paying for your employees' healthcare in the United States.
stochastic_monk··on Boris Johnson uses search terms in interviews to hide negative articles?
Correct. It's the corruption that has his critics seeing blood in the water. Visiting your affair's home during work hours while funneling money into her business and taking her on trips she has no reason to be on to boost her career is what's the problem, not the affair.

The fact that the affair has been admitted matters only because it bolsters corruption allegations.

stochastic_monk··on China Grew Two Cotton Leaves on the Moon
Please don't use code blocks for quotations. It ruins display/readability on mobile.
stochastic_monk··on In Defense of Richard Stallman
His creepy, shirtless "get on my mattress" calls to female undergrads at MIT register as more than being awkward or autistic. That alone should be unacceptable behavior for faculty.
stochastic_monk··on In Defense of Richard Stallman
Jury of peers is for criminal prosecution, not job performance assessment, which is closer to civil cases, in which preponderance of the evidence is the standard.
stochastic_monk··on A.I. researchers are making more than $1M, even at a nonprofit
Off-topic: Reminds me of "Half a mil in twenties like a billion where I'm from."

On-topic: that's misleading; once you pay fixed costs, you have a lot more latitude for discretionary income. Not everything is the same ratio more expensive in the Bay Area.

stochastic_monk··on More than half of the trees that grow only in Europe risk extinction, says IUCN
Because I'm not a dictator.

I can only make changes by being politically active and making environmentally sound decisions myself/encouraging others. I do these things, but don't have the power to force systemic change.

stochastic_monk··on Match.com Used Fake Ads to Swindle Users, F.T.C. Says
I know plenty of straight couples who are married or in committed long term relationships and met on tinder.
stochastic_monk··on Graal Autovectorization
NVIDIA's emphasis on modern C++ was very smart as well. Compare writing CUDA to OpenCL. I have hopes for ROC.
stochastic_monk··on Scientists create first billion-atom biomolecular simulation
I'm not familiar with this method, but NAMD and CHARM are a great way to inspect biological systems at greater resolution than experimental methods can measure. There was really cool work on fibrinogen about a decade ago showing how it provides elasticity.

stochastic_monk··on Small but significant improvements in Swift 5.1
Meaning that the underscore allows them to be used as positional arguments instead of being only accessed by "keywords", to use a python analogy?
stochastic_monk··on The effect of meditation on brain structure (2012)
Otherwise, I’m inclined to believe that this is new because this is “Hacker News”.
stochastic_monk··on Substantial Rise in Catalytic Converter Thefts
That was a typo, thanks for the catch! That’s exactly the point I was trying to make.

Interestingly, in the US, legal cannabis prices are usually more than double those on the black market because they’re taxed extremely heavily.

Granted, users of cannabis aren’t* usually as captive as those on opioids, but the issue remains that legality may not provide the price change desired.

* Edit: corrected typo on mobile.

stochastic_monk··on College admissions scam: Chinese parent arrested in Spain for bribery
> Xiaoning Sui, 48, of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, was arrested in Spain on Monday night and charged in an indictment with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud.

> Prosecutors said in a statement they are trying to extradite her from Spain to Boston to face charges.

If she’s from Canada, why is she supposedly Chinese? There’s nothing Chinese in the article but her name.

stochastic_monk··on Trump Will End California’s Authority to Set Stricter Auto Emissions Rules
No, that’s just the lie they sell it with.

stochastic_monk··on Parallel GCC: a research project aiming to parallelize a real-world compiler
I write template heavy code. I’ve recently refactored template instantiation across many object files. It’s faster, but a lot of work. It’d be great if I didn’t have to.
stochastic_monk··on Request for Comments on Patenting Artificial Intelligence Inventions
I hope there’s a similar precedent set to Alice vs. CLS Bank [0], stating that the same idea but implemented on a computer isn’t sufficient for a patent. It seems reasonable to me that solving a problem with artificial intelligence should follow similar rules.

stochastic_monk··on Facebook removed a fact-check on anti-abortion video after Ted Cruz complained
The Socialist Rifle Association, for instance, consists of left-leaning individuals who like guns.
stochastic_monk··on How the UK Security Services neutralised The Guardian
The Independent used to have a chum box on its page.

Whatever money it made for them, it made me associate that with their work, which I don’t think was that great to begin with.

stochastic_monk··on Why Are America’s Three Biggest Metros Shrinking?
I live in Baltimore. We have more murders at a population of 600,000.
stochastic_monk··on Bring Back the SE
My 3 year old SE finally broke. I spent 900 replacing it with an XR because they refused to release another SE and I value the emphasis on privacy and security.

But not again. I feel they’ve squandered the good will they’d earned with me by giving me a worse phone at double the cost. I don’t plan to purchase another.

stochastic_monk··on California Lawmakers Vote to Undo N.C.A.A. Amateurism
Rather than settling the agenda, I’d say they’re willing to experiment with policy that is then vetted before exporting.

I’d see it more like a laboratory.

stochastic_monk··on Menstruation Apps Are Sharing Users' Data
You mean turn down free money be being less evil? Somehow I don't expect this to be the case.
