stonedivot··on Most advice is right for the person giving it
But the people claiming that they were some special case that just "couldn't lose weight" no matter how little they ate were bullshitting you. They couldn't handle the suffering, and as such the calorie intake was larger than the calories burned. They wanted you to believe eating less wasn't the solution. The drug proves that it WAS the solution, suffering aside.

stonedivot··on Man discovers his parents' coffee machine used 1TB of data in 10 days
These aren't constraints. These are preferences. Framing them like constraints makes it sound like the whole situation is out of your hands, and therefore owning a smart device is practically thrust upon you by external forces.

Just say it: you bought a smart kettle due to your completely adjustable preferences.

stonedivot··on OpenAI withdraws three mathematical results
So mathematics is having the same issue all of the open source projects/maintainers have been dealing with for the past few years. Exciting times indeed.
stonedivot··on Nobel Prize in Physics 2026: Francis Halzen
Sounds like you'll be in line for the Nobel Prize next year once you derive all of this theoretically in a very elegant fashion! Think of the money they could have saved if someone had just come ask you to show them it was possible.
stonedivot··on Tell HN: Bob Cringely has died
This absolutely needs to be read by anyone here speaking of this man like some kind of tech god
stonedivot··on Vote on which of Hacker News' challenges for AI have been met

stonedivot··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
Honest question: doesn't this highlight how mundane and rote teaching has become? It's been distilled to the point that the lowest of the lowest common denominators can pass. The kids going through it are forced to learn things they will never use, unless it's going to be used in the more advanced class of the thing they'll never use until they graduate.

My hope is that this is a wake up call to teachers / professors to find a better way to evaluate students. To determine who has actually come away with a real understanding, vs those who were running around copying the assignments off of their peers anyway. These same people are now just skipping the peers and going straight to the all knowing oracle. It's the same as it ever was, degree mills.

stonedivot··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
Isn't that the point? To learn? If you're setting a goal that the students must pass, who cares if they get the information from the professor or they teach themselves?

I don't think "learning the material by other means" is the exam being "gamed".

stonedivot··on OpenAI GPT–6 Astra breaks Enigma message that has resisted solution since 2005
When someone writes a piece of software and uses "#include ...", or "import ...", etc, do you come to them and tell them they didn't write the solution on their own?
stonedivot··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Let's ignore that fact that you're saying "this isn't just a VR device" and then immediately describe the basic functionality of a VR device.

You really think people have been waiting to drop $1k for a device that lets them play games designed for a monitor inside of a headset rendering a larger virtual monitor with all of the additional complexity that brings?

stonedivot··on Aaron Swartz was prosecuted for scraping, while Meta does it without consequence
Don't waste your time arguing with people like this. They can't admit the nuance of the situation: what Aaron did was blatantly wrong, and what the government did in response was disproportionate. They will only focus on the latter, and make endless irrational justifications for the former.
stonedivot··on Pressed Penny Machine Map
This reminds me so deeply of the "old" internet that I can't help but want to get into penny pressing machines just for the sake of wanting to find this website useful to me. Just someone with a passion, cataloging it and sharing it with everyone else with no other ulterior motives.
stonedivot··on A 25-year-old video patent just expired, ending a legal headache for Linux
Why do you think it always only takes 5 years to develop some superior technology? 5 years seems like a short enough time frame that a company would rather just wait out the patent than invest heavily in R&D in the off chance they come up with a viable alternative (that now of course THEY can only protect for 5 years)

stonedivot··on Tl;dv: Over 180k meetings left wide open
I totally trusted this vendor selling me this snake oil, and he promised me it would work. I can't believe he let me down. This is all his fault.
stonedivot··on Humans missed 1 in 3 threats approving AI agent commands across 40k game runs
This game, like just about every game, has zero consequences for failure. This is like saying "Humans were involved in fatal accidents 50% of the time when playing my custom F1 racing simulator". There were no stakes and there was an artificial time constraint. Deriving any sort of takeaway from this data is entirely useless.
stonedivot··on Show HN: What should the GUI for AI agents look like?
Just wait until the creators find out about those "strange languages" that people are still typing into computers to make software.

stonedivot··on Physicists Solve a Muon Mystery. Now, Old Results Don't Add Up
The person you replied to was clearly asking of examples where some large paradigm shift caused large scale instances of suicidal thoughts, self harm, or otherwise, as a direct result of these new ideas.

Providing two cases is, first of all, certainly not anything like "large scale". Second, these two cases are in complete and total isolation of each other, so not evidence of people getting riled up over the same new idea. And third, these seem like extreme reactions to people not believe their OWN ideas, not reactions to other scientists presenting new ideas.

What do you think you've proven with these links?
