styts··on Name one thing in this photo
I'm positive I've recognised some items from the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jabberwocky poem.
styts··on Show HN: My CV is also a bootloader
Quick tip - screenshot is good, but add a video of the bootloader in action, it will get you more shares from the visual crowd.
styts··on The Wrong Abstraction (2016)
Watched the talk a few years ago. Several times. It really hit home. Before, I would try to introduce abstractions as soon as I had one instance of duplication. After, my code has more duplications, less nesting, less abstractions. It's easier for a newbie to understand (or myself down the line), it's easier to delete and modify. I've shared the mantra "duplication is better than the wrong abstraction" with colleagues on many occasions.
styts··on Patreon mistakenly shut down successfully funded project Armory3D
Given how much hype blockchain projects attract, I'd dare say that it's about time we had distributed and uncensorable crowd funding platforms.
styts··on Ask HN: A good primer on cryptocurrencies?
I have this habit too, and always wondered about it. Wish someone would have done a study on it.
styts··on Facebook – cancer of our generation
I've managed to break the daily habit by installing a browser extension that removes the main feed, while leaving the others, e.g. groups.

Not able to delete my account completely, because some of the social events I partake in are organized via FB.

styts··on Ask HN: What you have automated with Python?
In my country you can apply for social housing online - but you never know when new listings will be published. So I built a scraper that used a telephony api to give me a call when a new listing was published. On a Friday night I got my automated call, looked at the listing and immediately booked a place on the queue. I was second. But the first person must have said no to the flat, so I got it. Paid very low rent for the few years that I had it. They added a captcha soon after.
styts··on Project Jacquard
I imagine it would be great to sit through my commute, while typing something on my knees, with the touchscreen keyboard integrated into the fabric of my trousers.
styts··on Ask HN: Anyone willing to speculate on 'software in 100 years from now'?
I have to remind you of Excel. A large fraction of office workers today use it to 'code', transforming data given the rules they wrote.
styts··on Looking for a job at Google? We’re hiring coders with 3xp3r13nc3 1n l337
They better have a leet reader at hand, as they might get a lot of cover letters written in it.
styts··on Boston Dynamics' New Robot – Spot
I am reminded of a different creature: Rat Thing from Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash.
styts··on Show HN: Rim – Aspiring vim-like text editor [Rust]
A Readme with some screenshots I would find useful.
styts··on Ask HN: Do you use cheatsheets?
The only cheat sheet I remember using was http://www.viemu.com/vi-vim-cheat-sheet.gif when I was learning vim.

Otherwise just googling a quick answer seems most efficient (or quickly searching through the code).

styts··on A Sarcastic Comment about Instant Message Virtual Keyboards
Can you give an example of what you consider "instant message virtual keyboards"? Do you mean voice recognition services like those offered by Apple and Google?
styts··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (March 2014)
SEEKING WORK – REMOTE or in Vienna, Austria.

Full-stack Python/Django web developer; have worked remotely with clients outside Europe.

I have worked on:

* a large database app for a local university

* webserver automation software for a local hosting company

* coin catalog and shopping cart for a local collector

* property management app for a company in China

* simple games

I have a CS degree and have worked with non-python languages (Java, PHP, Delphi, C/C++) in the past. I’ve held a few workshops on python for programming novices at a local university. MacOS, zsh, vim and git are essential tools for my workflow.

Find some examples of my work at

http://www.ksware.com

styts··on What side projects did you start in 2014?
I built a browser-based puzzle game based on a concept from Machinarium: http://unbeaded.com/

My friends liked it, but I haven't had much success showing it off on the Internet.

styts··on Show HN: The ugliest MVP ever because I know squat about coding
Regarding this form of mockup: it was not clear what else I could do besides clicking between the years from the dashboard view. In general, I think many will not have figured out that you're supposed to click somewhere.

So it's subscriptions management app, cool. It won't be so trivial to deduce the subscriptions from the users mailbox, wonder how you'll do that.

styts··on Ask HN: Seeking the ultimate definitive guide to installing postgres on OSX
I have installed it with homebrew several times, just pay attention to the instructions of the "brew install postgres" command.
styts··on HTML5 Genetic Cars
A _gene_ for weight.
styts··on HTML5 Genetic Cars
Could you add a genome for "weight"? Some cars seem so light that they overturn easily.
styts··on Ask HN: Where to start?
You sound like you're trying to learn several things at once. How do you e.g. expect to successfully learn a technique like TDD, if you constantly have peculiarities of a new OS getting in the way?

Try to absorb new things one at a time, and then expand onward.

styts··on A 'Whom Do You Hang With?' Map of America
I wonder if we could see a map like this for the whole world.
styts··on Dropbox is not a tool for developers
As a developer I only keep my source files symlinked to Dropbox, thus avoiding the problem of uploading binaries. Dropbox serves as a means to recover lost changes, should something happen between commits. There can be no excuse not to use backups and version control.
styts··on A typical programmers toolbox
Exactly. An editor, a shell and a browser is all you need.

I feel sorry for all MS devs who have to use so many platform-specific tools.

styts··on Review my startup idea: One API to rule them all.
Immediately thought of this cartoon: http://xkcd.com/927/ ;) <br/> This could be a relevant resource: http://www.programmableweb.com/
styts··on I just started my own charitable fund
Thinking of your cause, these two organisations come to mind: http://pystar.org/ and http://www.blackgirlscode.com/ I'm sure there are many others like these, though.
styts··on How to Make Your Site Look Half-Decent in Half an Hour
Thanks for the summary. Although, as a programmer, I've known most of the things mentioned, it would have still saved me some extra time (better spent writing code than designing).
styts··on Show HN: What's Your Browser's Age?
Working fine here: "Your Browser's Age: 6 days old" for Google Chrome 22.0.1229.79.
styts··on Distribution of colors in movie posters between 1914 and 2012
Nowhere does he say that he spent all of the 2 weeks working on this entirely. My guess would be that he did a 2-day sprint to hack the prototype and a bit more to polish it across the 2 weeks. Point is - he would not bill 2 working weeks were it a contracting gig. But then again, where'd you get such a motivated contractor (cf. working on own project)?
styts··on Russian Wikipedia Goes on Strike Over Censorship Plans
Public opinion has effect. It's just that government-controlled media would otherwise not report such controversial laws being considered. I sincerely thank Wikipedia for bringing public attention to this issue. Now twitter is trending with #RuWikiBlackout and all major Russian news channels are reporting the blackout.
