sujal··on Ask HN: Are you still using your Vision Pro?
I still use mine every couple of weeks for movies that my family doesn’t want to watch with me.

I also use it as my hotel setup when I travel for work. It’s great having a full size monitor wherever I need. I’m excited for the coming improvements with vision os 2.0.

I’m still not comfortable using it in public, though. It feels ostentatious, but I will try it the next time I fly with the family. Having people I trust around me will make me more willing to go immersive while traveling.

sujal··on How Home Assistant is being used to protect from missile and drone attacks
How about between Florida and New York? Or cities in red states vs their state government? It’s not zero anymore, especially when politicians challenging federal authority (eg Texas with border control) in obviously illegal ways.

We have numerous examples - Jan 6th, the Bundy standoffs, Oklahoma City, the Black Wall Street bombings - the risk isn’t zero.

sujal··on Ask an Algo Dev – 6 HRT quants answer common questions about their role [video]
I imagine this is a recruiting video based on the hashtags used at college job fairs and postings. The age choices were intentional, IMHO.
sujal··on iPad users will miss out on third-party app stores, browser engines, and more
Apple didn’t invent the smartphone, never had a the dominant share of phones sold globally. They didn’t even invent the first touchscreen phone.

Their innovation has always been marrying software and hardware. It is a high risk approach that they execute well.

sujal··on Apple to pause advertising on X after Musk backs antisemitic post
It’s wild that you think anything on that Wikipedia page describes anything resembling a movement “against ‘white people’”.

You’re bending over backwards to find the context in Musk’s comment (which many, up and down this thread, have correctly criticized).

Then you take the attitude you ascribe to musk critics and apply that to a reading of an academic theory that’s not actually taught in grade schools.

sujal··on Scammers posing as customer service agents on X as companies leave platform
This example (because of the underlying rule change) explains why this has been such a focus of the right wing and of Elon. I never really cared about that mark and didn’t understand the focus on it. Literally one of the first things they changed after the takeover.
sujal··on X scraps tool to report electoral fake news
Who was running the FBI at the time of this story? (Hint: Biden wasn’t in government at the time)
sujal··on Inhibition of fatty acid oxidation enables heart regeneration in adult mice
I feel that your reference was missed by too many. Bravo. Will risk the downvotes to say I appreciated it.
sujal··on Show HN: Slow Social, a social network built for friends, not influencers
This is great, and I really appreciate the time you took to explain your thinking. I have similar feelings about the social networks out there, and I’m working on my own take on what I want. It’s very different than what you did, so I’m curious to try yours out and see what everyone has to say. We need more experiments like this - unabashedly anti-engagement and pro-utility.

Good luck with this!

sujal··on After Car2Go eased its background checks, 75 vehicles were stolen in one day
I think you're thinking different acronyms? He meant Proof of concept?
sujal··on See all your purchases, subscriptions and reservations
I’d add Fastmail + Mailroute. It’s working well for me, with spam protection that’s just a tiny step below GMails.
sujal··on If you stay in the office any longer, I’ll start charge you rent
It sounds like you made a choice, and like the examples he cites in the article, you had significant upside. And, kicking everyone else out meant that you were aware of the tradeoffs, at least conceptually. Think a lot of us have chose tradeoffs like that in our lives. The thing that's tacky here is that the CEO assumes his employees need to behave like a founder.
sujal··on Farewell Kagi
Does anyone know what the fraud incident was that they reference? I couldn't find anything on Google and don't remember any news, either...
sujal··on iPhone 6 TouchID hack
Where do you see iOS 8 compatibility? It's not mentioned on the features page.
sujal··on Google's Self-Driving Car Can't Navigate Heavy Rain or Most Roads
Does anyone remember that awful Schwarzenegger movie, the Sixth Day? It seems like the cars could work like the ones from the movie at the current stage. Basically they take over for the long, boring part of the ride and then hand control over for the trickier local bits. That way, when I make the long trip to my parents' house or my in laws, for example, I can hand over control for the parts where I might get tired, distracted by my son, etc. That capability would be a huge win for me.
sujal··on Chattanooga offers residents lightning-quick connections, to telecoms' dismay
I think someone hits on this in a different thread, but there are forms of incorporating these sorts of utilities that avoid most of the difficulty of maintenance, etc. For example, in the recent multi-week power outage a few years ago here in CT, the best response came from the municipally owned power company serving the Norwich area [1]. It's not impossible to do this.

Also, there are better ways to look at how to fund these. For example, having municipalities own the wiring only, and let ISPs pay to have access to the homes (similar to how telecom or power systems work now, e.g. different charge for distribution). I would love more choices of providers, honestly, and with fiber, there are better options for managing traffic at the neighborhood and local level.

sujal··on How I started BetaList
Love the hacks that turn into something useful. I know it may have been a 'trick' or whatever, but this is an example that proves that "scratch your own itch" to build a great product. He could've used BetaList for his own startup, so he built it.

That it was built quickly, using Tumblr, and then evolved is just being fast on your feet and doing good work.

sujal··on Show HN: Rollcall – An easy way to build a status board for your team
We just pushed out a simple integration. Check it out :)
sujal··on Show HN: Rollcall – An easy way to build a status board for your team
We changed the pricing page last night (and added a note about it being something actively being thought about). However, it's not $30/u/mon but $3. That puts us in between services like Hipchat and idonethis. I'm compiling a more thorough spreadsheet of competitors in the space and how they break down. Lots of different price points in this space.
sujal··on Show HN: Rollcall – An easy way to build a status board for your team
On the list. We focused on what our beta testers used first. We're trying to roll through more integrations as fast as we can.
sujal··on Show HN: Rollcall – An easy way to build a status board for your team
One of our beta testers during our closed beta brought iDoneThis to our attention. It looks like a good product. We don't have the email replies built in yet, but it's something we're looking at based on that early feedback.

and, the naming conundrum - we just stuck with what we called it when it was an internal tool. I can respect the confusion angle, though. Still, you should give it a try :)

sujal··on Show HN: Rollcall – An easy way to build a status board for your team
Thanks - we're going to look at the pricing again based on the comments here. (Love CircleCI, btw - I used it at a previous gig).
sujal··on Show HN: Rollcall – An easy way to build a status board for your team
The value here, IMHO, is that this leaves an artifact behind of what's been done in a way that stand ups, at least the way I've experienced them, doesn't.

The "realtime" aspect of it is less important than it seems at first. Our team, for example, updates 3-4 times a day on average, sometimes a bit more if we're just jumping from project to project to cleanup bugs or do general maintenance.

The fact that we've positioned this as a status board just reinforces that perception - that seems to be a common sentiment, and something we're going to have to consider again.

Thanks for the feedback.

sujal··on Show HN: Rollcall – An easy way to build a status board for your team
Thanks for the feedback. We're still working through the pricing model, but we erred on the side of making it easy to get on board. I hadn't thought about it the way you put it, though, so we may re-evaluate this sooner than later.

The other aspect of this is that we have other features coming that we expect to be able to charge more for. Complicating the pricing matrix was something we're concerned about, but we were thinking something like Github's two-tier pricing model when we got those features out.

But, like I said, the way you explained it was not a perspective I had considered. Thanks for the feedback, was helpful.

sujal··on Show HN: Rollcall – An easy way to build a status board for your team
Thanks for the feedback. I agree - if you've got one product or one specific thing you're working on, this probably is overkill. In our case, we have several products out in the market, and a small team that manages it all, including maintenance & support.

Thanks for the feedback, though - it would be good to hear if others have similar thoughts.

sujal··on Why Netflix should buy AMC
This is probably not a big concern anymore. Almost all the major studios are in bed with a distributor of some kind. HBO & Time Warner, NBC/Universal and Comcast, and so on. Disney is the only one I can think of without some cable arm attached, maybe Viacom? Fox has/had Sky internationally and used to own a piece of DirecTV, IIRC.

Thus, Netflix wouldn't be an outlier, but part of a broad change/consolidation happening to the industry.

sujal··on Twitter Just Shut Down Ribbon’s Newly Launched In-Stream Payments Feature
The preview doesn't look anything like their final implementation. That preview looks like an actual movie player, while the final card screenshots I've seen look like regular content cards with a lot of custom branding.

This looks like a clever hack of the Twitter implementation of the Player card and not the intended use. The stream and content type attributes both are empty, for example. Does anyone know if this sort of implementation is what that card is supposed to allow?

sujal··on Today's XKCD: Microsoft
Your individual hardware is not like a city. Poor analogy.

This is like saying that your microwave manufacturer has a monopoly on your microwave. Just buy another microwave.

sujal··on Who cares if Samsung copied Apple?
I agree with you re: "cheering" a side, but I don't agreew ith your broad conclusion that Samsung is innovating through copying. Here's my counter for this entire argument: There's no reason to copy certain things: http://fatmixx.com/2010/12/07/samsungs-galaxy-tab-has-a-fami...

I also don't agree that Samsung "improved" upon Apple's work, at least not for the devices Apple is suing for. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the Note is not one of those devices.

Samsung is in a different category of copying from what you're describing, IMHO. That's why I'm OK with Apple suing them. I don't know if I like that Apple is suing them, but I'm not going to condemn them for it.

sujal··on The Mac App Store’s future of irrelevance
Many (most?) indie mac apps use Sparkle (http://sparkle.andymatuschak.org) to autoupdate. It's generally easy to use, so most people don't need to go the microsoft/adobe route.
