sunflowerfly··on UK offshore wind prices come in 40% cheaper than gas in record auction
Yes, it is completely reasonable if you understand the concept of externalities.
sunflowerfly··on AccuWeather to discontinue free access to Core Weather API
We once were. We built canals, a massive railroad system, then our interstate system. Likely a sign of our slow decline to a has been country.

Today we should be building subways, a hub and spoke high speed rail system, and an automated hub and spoke freight system that uses trucks only for first and last mile. And maybe a tunnel at the Bering straight.

sunflowerfly··on Show HN: DataRamen, a Fast SQL Explorer with Automatic Joins and Data Navigation
I may have to stop using Em-dashes.
sunflowerfly··on Stellantis abandons hydrogen fuel cell development
Long haul trucking should almost not exist. Automate a hub and spike rail system instead. Truck the first and last mile.
sunflowerfly··on US Defense Department will stop providing satellite weather data
They want to privatize it for private gain and to shut down climate change alarms. It is in Project 2025.
sunflowerfly··on Air India crash points to systemic problems at Boeing that CEO Ortberg must fix
That plane had recently had major service done. The computer was likely shut off for that service.
sunflowerfly··on Tesla launches robotaxi rides in Austin
Texas just passed a law to license autonomous driving, but does not take effect until this fall.
sunflowerfly··on The Gender Attractiveness Gap
Just look at the cover of “mom porn” books at the dollar store. They are mostly body builders with muscular bodies.
sunflowerfly··on Charlottesville activist facing vandalism charges for makeshift crosswalk
That is nice, but I doubt any city can afford to put that at every single crosswalk. Assuming there are enough to have an actual walkable city. A street sign and pavement markings should be a minimum.proper curbing for the blind a first addition. I appreciate the concrete islands in the center of the street that are common in Europe (where cities are actually walkable).
sunflowerfly··on Apple's Liquid Glass is prep work for AR interfaces, not just a design refresh
Microsoft gave up on a phone operating system far too early.
sunflowerfly··on Trump's gamble puts the dollar at risk as the reserve currency
Except, they are not even trying to lower the deficit. They are trying to cut taxes.
sunflowerfly··on FTC bans hidden fees for live events and short-term rentals, effective May 12
Like many countries in Europe, the price should include tax and tips as well.
sunflowerfly··on White House “Accelerating” Nuclear Power With Executive Orders
Here in rural America, turbines use very little land. Probably similar to an oil well. The field it is placed in loses little capacity for other farm uses. The farmer gets a nice subsidy and the county receives tax revenue. This scenario is the majority of the US.

I agree they do not fit into urban environments. And they also do not fit in tourist areas, where people wish to gaze upon unspoiled nature, such as many mountain ranges in the US.

sunflowerfly··on Driverless semis have started running regular longhaul routes
Create a hub and spoke system with automated container sorting at the hubs. Basically build a national rail distribution system that works like a modern distribution warehouse. Long haul trucking should not exist.
sunflowerfly··on Top Colleges Are Too Costly Even for Parents Making $300k
I have wondered about the effects of adding minimum wages/salaries for positions that require each degree level. For example, if the job requires a bachelor degree or masters degree then the job must pay at least $X/hr. Set that rate just high enough to discourage abuse.
sunflowerfly··on Even Republicans are falling out of love with Tesla
He has also not shown the ability to design new products. All of their vehicles except the Cyber Truck where in design when he bought the company. His one product is a flop.
sunflowerfly··on Even Republicans are falling out of love with Tesla
Exactly this. The difference in a “red” or “blue” state is usually only about 5% of the population. The only place this is not true is DC.
sunflowerfly··on Why California's dangerous drivers get to keep their licenses
The root cause is a lack of viable alternatives.
sunflowerfly··on Jellyfin as a Spotify alternative
A lot of my media are home movies.
sunflowerfly··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
Not at rates anywhere near tax rates on wages of a middle class worker.
sunflowerfly··on 2025 Recession Indicators Hit Fashion and Wall Street at Once
Power. The power to punish. The power to attempt to make people or countries do what you want. It is not economic. It only makes sense if you think like a mobster.
sunflowerfly··on Location data show that race affects citations and fines for speeding
A black friend of mine gets stopped constantly. He is highly educated (well beyond a bachelors degree) in a stem field. He dresses professionally. He drives cautiously and does not speed. He once joked he does not feel as bad getting stopped at night because it is less likely racial profiling.
sunflowerfly··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
We have tried this before about 100 years ago. Supply chains and economies were not nearly as interconnected as they are now. Read the history of the Smoot–Hawley Tariff Act.
sunflowerfly··on ICE Revoking Students' Immigration Statuses Without Their or the Uni's Knowledge
I disagree on drug development. It is important enough we could simply pay for the research. We pay for a lot of it with taxpayer money already while the gains are privatized. The other areas are not critical to our lives and, while there is room for improvement, current IP practices are ok.
sunflowerfly··on How 'Careless People' is becoming a bigger problem for Meta
FB marketplace is a terrible market. It does not allow exact searches. It forces scrolling hundreds of ads in the hope of finding what I need. Even Craigslist had (has?) far better searching. If you do something crazy like sort by distance half the ads disappear. It is full of scam ads (I have given up trying to buy used phones, for example). Sadly I am forced to use it because that is where all the local person-to-person selling happens.
sunflowerfly··on Numbering should start at zero (1982)
We taught our toddler to count from zero. Their kindergarten teacher was not amused.
sunflowerfly··on The Ozempocalypse Is Nigh
Monopolies for drugs that received even a penny of government subsidies should not exist. We should simply pay for research and open the patents on the results, or outlaw drug patents outright. Let the drug companies compete on manufacturing.
sunflowerfly··on Dodge Chargers now have pop-up ads at every stoplight
I also woukd not buy too old for the safety features. But my 2007 has side air bags. Sadly it has over 330k miles and will need replaced soon. Likely with another lowish mileage 10+ year old car that I can pay cash for.
sunflowerfly··on Mercedes-Benz Drives Toward Solid-State EV Batteries
EV’s catch fire at a far lower rate than gas vehicles.
sunflowerfly··on FA Cup to use semi-automated offsides for first time
As a non soccer fan, why does the offsides rule even exist at the pro level? It would be far more fun with fast breaks.
