supdatecron··on How South Korea Reined In The Outbreak Without Shutting Everything Down
Thank you for sharing this updated clarification. I just shared it with that medical professional who showed me the original. Hoping to spread this clarification
supdatecron··on How South Korea Reined In The Outbreak Without Shutting Everything Down
There was a study that showed cotton masks can actually be worse. A medical person showed me the other day, I’ll have to ask for the link
supdatecron··on Feds charge Venezuelan President Maduro, others with narco-terrorism
> Maduro’s indictment marks the second time that the U.S. government has brought criminal charges against a sitting foreign head of state. The last time was in 1989, when federal prosecutors in Miami indicted Panamanian strongman Manuel Noriega on drug-trafficking charges. and U.S. military forces seized him late that year. Noriega was convicted at trial, imprisoned in the Miami area and died in 2017.

I wonder if we'll see this part of history replay itself in 2020/2021.

supdatecron··on Google's Down
They added "We are experiencing an issue with Google Cloud infrastructure components" at the top, but everything is still green.

Are they unaware of which components have issues?

supdatecron··on Ask HN: How to self-study physics?
> Most of what you learn in uni physics is Math. But the Math is only one (outdated) description of the nature of physical law.

Is this the lack of additional parameters for the equations? All of my physics problems (only took a couple courses) were like "what if this spherical horse rolled down a hill at 34 degree decline" but failed to include friction, atmosphere. Just gravity. It always felt fake to me. Perhaps this is what you were alluding to by the "outdated" description?

supdatecron··on Keeping a Bibliography
I searched for this but it says it is coming soon: https://highlightsapp.net/

Did you mean something else?

supdatecron··on The Great Toilet Paper Scare of 1973 (2014)
I’ve lived this small and you get clever. I put things in storage under my bed, in my bookshelf, and in boxes in my closet. Worst case, I would just stack them in the open or on counters, behind the sink, and on window ledges
supdatecron··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on now?
Sorry, but what is a ham? a HAM radio operator or something else?
supdatecron··on Apple CarPlay, Android Auto distract drivers more than pot, alcohol, says study
> even voice can be distracting when you have to repeat variations of the same command five times and keep checking whether it actually works.

This is a silly argument, given the number of arguments that I’ve seen drivers participate in.

supdatecron··on FDA just cleared a $20 Covid-19 antibody test
> will only be positive days after the onset of symptoms.

If you're asymptomatic, would it also be positive?

supdatecron··on Doctors Say Shortage of Protective Gear Is Dire
> If literally the only thing they do is force a sensible election system, it’ll be worth it.

If global history (even just the past 70 years) is any indication of the results, there's a very high chance a coup won't force a sensible election system. Let's not dream up this situation

supdatecron··on NASA fixes Mars lander by telling it to hit itself with a shovel
That was clever, though I get the feeling someone spent 5+ years of their life watching movies just to clip all the percussive maintenance haha
supdatecron··on GM’s CEO Offers to Make Ventilators in WWII-Style Mobilization
I'm sure the hospital nurses can learn via on-the-job training in a day. This is an emergent situation. No one is suggesting pulling a random person off the street to do it
supdatecron··on NASA to launch 247 petabytes of data into AWS, but forgot about egress costs
Your numbers are way off, as you didn't account for redundancy of the drives (any failure or bit flips of 1 of those 2,470 drives will cause corruption of likely the entire data set).

> Network cards, bandwidth, electricity cost > I can't guess.

This is where a huge amount of cost is.

> And that won't be recurring cost.

Maintenance, humans, cooling, drive replacements, property, building, land tax, payroll tax are all recurring costs.

supdatecron··on ISH: An Alpine Linux Shell on iOS
Wow. This gave me a flashback to the early days of iOS jailbreaking, back in late 2000's. Wasn't "alpine" the password for the original jailbreak (that you downloaded over a safari/web PDF link if I recall). I never did learn exactly why "alpine" was the password...
supdatecron··on For Years WallStreet Spent More on Buybacks Than It Earned-Now They Want Bailout
Yes, but demand is also down due to isolation/quarantine
supdatecron··on For Years WallStreet Spent More on Buybacks Than It Earned-Now They Want Bailout
+1 to this. I think it was 4 years back, the oil prices dropped hard and the airlines bought futures quantities in large supply to hedge for future needs. It was a smart strategy

This is really cool Sundeep, thanks for doing this! Question for you: what did you use to draw the diagrams for the "Javascript Regex" book, such as on the cover? Thanks!

supdatecron··on Notification of Enforcement Discretion for telehealth remote communications
> For example Google does live transcribing of the conversation on meet/hangouts.

Can you provide a link to this? I was unaware of it and can't find the feature. I did find that Hangouts Meet offers video recording...

What's your plan now, given this news?
supdatecron··on The good parts of AWS: a visual summary
> Avoid using S3 for static web hosting (No HTTPS)

Ya, "avoid" is a strong word. I use S3 for tons of static web hosting, because it is exceptionally cheap and I don't have to worry about patching CentOS/Apache/MySQL/PHP and all the other binaries/daemons that I used to. I know how to, I just would rather not when S3 is a couple pence per GB.

supdatecron··on Association of Flight Attendants: The solution is direct payroll subsidies
I thought this was relevant for discussion as a way to skip-aside corporate greed and help those directly affected. The union told Congress the same. Has this been tried before?

"We have told Congress that any stimulus funds for the aviation industry must come with strict rules: continued paychecks for every worker and NO stock buy backs, dividends, executive bonuses, broken contracts, or interference with organizing."

supdatecron··on U.S. Health Agency Suffers Cyber-Attack During Covid-19 Response

Does anyone have a copy or screenshot of this tweet?
