swayson··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
Huggingface sold out. Sad day. All the good companies lose their 'dont do evil' clause as soon as they make bank
swayson··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
Just like that they lost their ethos. AI oligarchy in the US is now cemented.
swayson··on AI will make formal verification go mainstream
Really nice book on the subject -- Algorithms for Validation. The online version is actually freely accessible as a PDF.

swayson··on Why is ChatGPT being sycophantic even when I ask it to be objective?
I add these instructions. Works wonders.

Do Not Use First-Person Pronouns

Avoid Creating a Relationship

No Emotional Language

Talk Like a Computer

swayson··on Switching to Claude Code and VSCode Inside Docker
Correlation does not equal causation as the old adage goes. Just because if you havent seen the pattern, doesn't mean it can't.

It is like insurance, 99.95% of the time you don't need it. But when you do, you wish you had it.

swayson··on YouTube isn't happy you're using ad blockers – and it's doing something about it
Wonder if spotify will grow in popularity as a result of this in terms of podcast content.
swayson··on Generative AI Is a Disaster, and Companies Don't Seem to Care
Heard and interesting talk about AI being described through the metaphor of Molock. If you really entertain the thought experiment, is is interesting to see the world race for power, control of its tech.
swayson··on After days of destruction, Macron blames a familiar bogeyman: video games
Politician always point elsewhere, and change the focus. Why folks fall for the shallow reasoning I will never understand. Calibrate on behaviour, not words.
swayson··on Ban on recording without consent is unconstitutional, US court rules
Anyone know what the laws around this is in South Africa?
swayson··on Tell HN: Nearly all of Evernote’s remaining staff has been laid off
Obsidian.md for the win. I used to use evernote way back when they started, was cool software, then they started scaling and added worst search UI I have ever come across. That day, I deleted my account and went markdown with my own storage. Don't see the benefit of why your notes should be controlled by others.
swayson··on Decades-long bet on consciousness ends
Have you ever met someone who recently had a severe stroke or suffers dementia? Their sense of self can be completely lost by such trauma. Sure they still have identity in the memories of others. But I'd say one must distinguish identity from Self.
swayson··on Ask HN: How does ChatGPT work?
Yannic Kilcher did an explainer recently on his YT channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0A8ljAkdFtg

Yannic explains these models pretty well.

swayson··on The Green Revolution Is Fueled by 40k Trafficked Congo Child Slaves
Made me think of Socrates and living by virtue.
swayson··on Google to turn on activity tracking for many users who turned it off
Yet, we all use their services, willingly or not. Need a class action and rigorous approach this problem. Else, this reinforcing loop will just continue
swayson··on You're not dumb, the prerequisites are bullshit
Refreshing take!
swayson··on Statistical Rethinking (2022 Edition)

swayson··on “Chatbots: Still Dumb After All These Years”
You need a really good team and MlOps/DevOps pipeline to bring world class chatbot support and performance. I think there is still opportunity in this space, but you need Apple Level Design care to make it work.
swayson··on Ask HN: Favorite Podcast Episode of 2021?
I find it challenging to choose one but Andrew Huberman's podcast is exceptional. Latest in neuroscience/neurobiology which is accessible to the general public. From topics like sleep, anxiety, learning, performance etc. I have learned so much and applying the protocols have been great.
swayson··on Ask HN: Favorite Podcast Episode of 2021?
The impression I get is he specialises more around the philsophy of AI and cybernetics.
swayson··on Facebook whistleblower says she wants to fix company, not harm it
Good point
swayson··on Facebook-owned sites were down
This really is a fascinating case-study of what is truly resilient systems. More often than not, they are not centralized.
swayson··on Facebook-owned sites were down
> I hope they don't lose their job.

FB has such poor integrity, I'd not be surprised if they take such extreme measures.

swayson··on Facebook whistleblower says she wants to fix company, not harm it
100% this. From what I heard Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, completely disallowed their kids to use of smartphones until they were much older and independent.

When there is no skin-in-the-game, one must ask why, do they do this?

swayson··on Serbia surveillance law urgently withdrawn
Agree, although I doubt EU actually cares about human rights. Power, greed, control and money is what drives the modern day globalized economy.
swayson··on Disable Google Drive drive letter
Slippery slope, slowly conditioning people, and before you know it. Only a select few may have the ability to use general computers.

Speculation, but plausible. I'd look at the broader trends, not just this one event. Rather, the series of events and the dark pattern behind it.

swayson··on Facebook knows Instagram is toxic for teen girls, company documents show
Facebook has no integrity.
swayson··on Ask HN: Books that teach you logic building skills
It is subscription based and you get access to all of the courses for a single price. To gain maximum value, you will need to use the platform regularly. For me it is worth it as the content is good qquality content and it suits my learning style. Work through problem solving and developing intuition, often through visual aids and everyday experience.

The math and science subjects I'd say is most mature, and has the most content. thereafter one can practice more from textbooks or alike to really go into the depth and expand on the mastery.

swayson··on Germany's federal police agency purchased and used 'Pegasus' spyware
And this is why certain events are considered catalysts on a slippery slope...
swayson··on Ask HN: Books that teach you logic building skills
Not a book, but I found the logic courses on brilliant.org to really stretch the brain muscle

swayson··on Disable Google Drive drive letter
No idea, not sure if it is the next generation of users, forcing the change, or something more nefarious. ultimately, "control is an illusion"
