swills··on Alternatives to MinIO for single-node local S3
I've had good experiences with Versity GW too and it's a shame it's not more well known.
swills··on Scientists Find Worms in Almost Every Fish in a Tuna Haul – 96% Were Infected
Part of the story that says:

In 2020, researchers at the University of Washington found evidence that Anisakis worms in raw seafood have increased 280 times since the 1970s.

So that seems new or new-ish.

swills··on The turbulent AI era is here
Nearly every post about AI turns into a discussion of politics and every post about politics becomes a discussion of AI.
swills··on Incident with Github.com
Here's an article from Oct 2025:

"Microsoft’s data-center shortages to persist longer than expected - Bloomberg"

https://ca.finance.yahoo.com/news/microsoft-data-center-shor...

Perhaps relevant tho. I would imagine if they could simply throw more hardware at it they would. And I wouldn't imagine inability to throw hardware at it would be due to software scaling issues. So perhaps it is simply lack of available hardware?

swills··on Incident with Github.com [resolved]
Agree. But also, it's affecting everyone equally, whether they have a free personal account or are part of an enterprise account with SLA. Understanding the practical value of an SLA is an interesting problem.
swills··on Isaac Asimov: The Last Question (1956)

swills··on We rewrote JSONata with AI in a day, saved $500k/year
I'm going to be the contrarian here. I have looked at the code. I suspect quite a few nil deref panics in their future.
swills··on The most-seen UI on the internet? Redesigning turnstile and challenge pages
In a row?
swills··on Show HN: Clocksimulator.com – A minimalist, distraction-free analog clock
Same and also I consider it more accurate to sweep, but that's just me I guess, you hardly see it these days.
swills··on Shut Up: Comment Blocker
I've used it for years. It's nice, works well. When I do want to read comments, I just click the button in the tool bar to turn them back on, which is simple and convenient.
swills··on RCE via ND6 Router Advertisements in FreeBSD
"work-around" tends to imply you get to keep using things. By your logic, turning the computer off would be a work-around too.
swills··on Go is portable, until it isn't
Yes, indeed, I do.
swills··on Go is portable, until it isn't
I happily and reliably cross build Go code that uses CGO and generate static binaries on amd64 for arm64.
swills··on Go is portable, until it isn't
You can definitely use CGO and still build statically, but you do need to set ldflags to include -static.
swills··on Tor browser removing various Firefox AI features
Am I the only one who remembers the old tab groups that were removed before these new tab groups were added?

Edit: Ah, it seems Mozilla remembers: https://web.archive.org/web/20151112023150/https://support.m... (linking archive.org in case they take it down, this is the first copy I can find)

swills··on ADS-B Exposed
Highlighting an area, I see in the sidebar: Time: 2022-02-01 00:09:20.136 — 2023-12-07 22:46:41.480. Would be nice if it had newer data.
swills··on Asked to do something illegal at work? Here's what these software engineers did
I really do not know what to think of someone facing up to 75 years in prison getting 3 years of probation.
swills··on Enlisting in the Fight Against Link Rot
Might I suggest that instead of linking to the article at theatlantic.com you instead link to the archive.org archive of it? I couldn't visit it due to Cloudflare thinking IPv6 is the devil and then still couldn't read it due to the paywall. Here's the archive.org link that sorta works for me, until their JavaScript removes the majority of the page content shortly after loading:

swills··on FreeBSD Scheduling on Hybrid CPUs
Hmm, I think Granite Rapids is all P-Cores and goes up to 86 cores (172 threads):

swills··on Show HN: I’ve built an IoT device to let my family know when I’m in a meeting
Thanks, you inspired me to make something similar:

swills··on Show HN: Kubernetes Spec Explorer
Looks very nice! Thanks!
swills··on Surviving Threads: Why Are People Drawn to the World's Most Harrowing Film?
The BBS Radio 4 documentary is here:

Charlie Brooker of Black Mirror fame talks a bit about it around 17 minutes in.

swills··on OpenNMS: Visualize and monitor everything on your local and distributed networks
Once years ago a coworker set this up with good intentions of evaluating it and it ended up setting up a default automation which sent SNMP queries to a networked photocopier which triggered it to print some diagnostic page repeatedly until it ran out of paper overnight while no one was around. Anecdotal, but amusing to me and it's still the first thing that comes to mind when I see this product.
swills··on Low Cost Mini PCs
I have some M910q that I am very happy with. UEFI is well supported, I was able to upgrade them to 32gb of RAM, i7 7700t and both a 512gb SSD and NVMe for mirrored storage. Highly recommended. Sure, it would be nice to get something newer than 7th gen, but it's still highly capable, small, quiet and fairly low power usage.
swills··on Show HN: CPU Prices on eBay
Looks great! Can you please add LGA 4677? Thanks!
swills··on Scrollbars are becoming a problem
Not exactly the same problem, but a lot of the times I see dark to medium gray text on a light to medium gray background.

For me, the solution to this is:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/font-contrast...

Forces the text to black at least. Pretty reliable. Sometimes needs overrides which are easy to do.

swills··on Perl first commit: a “replacement” for Awk and sed
As far as I know, https://cpantesters.org/ is still unrivaled though. None of those have the level of testing that CPAN Testers provides.
swills··on Rocky Linux claims to have found 'path forward' from CentOS source purge
"There are an awful lot of people who feel that simply because this is Linux, they have some kind of right to get it for free. Unfortunately, they don't." -- Where in the world did they get that impression?!
swills··on The odd appeal of absurdly long YouTube videos
FTA: "to trick your parents into thinking the computer’s off so you can play games without having to reenter the password" -- seems to cover it to me, no?
swills··on Distillation of 20 Management and Leadership Books and Resources
All I get is: Application error: a client-side exception has occurred (see the browser console for more information).

Odd, I wonder why. Oh well.
