syeare··on Cannabis and driving? Studies reveal big risks
TL;DR Nonsense "study"

A study for real world risks based on a videogame, of all things? Its impossible to directly map the experience of being behind the wheel in real life to a game, and the article doesn't even mention whether it's an actual simulation (like beam.NG), game-like (as in Assetto Corsa), or plain arcade fantasy (GTA, Need for Speed) OBVIOUSLY people are gonna play games in a more fun/different way under the influence They even admit that inhaled usage showed little to no consistency in driving difference Bias disclaimer: I stopped consumption some time back

syeare··on Microsoft Israel chief leaves amid ethical controversy
As if voting changes anything beyond the color ("red"/"blue") of the paid-off figurehead in power Voting hasn't been anywhere remotely close to real since the 20th century
syeare··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2026)
No offense, but why doesn't anyone suspect these types of posts to be some corporate data farming?
syeare··on Why Does a Single Firefox Tab Take Almost 1.5GB RAM?
Although I'd like to read and respond to the reply made by Emre_Ozkan, it is unfortunately [flagged] and [dead]

Quite disappointing whenever I see this type of...of censorship, would this be considered??? I am sure there are many interesting perspectives and this is not the first occurrence of burying comments and/or responses that I have observed as a longtime lurker

syeare··on Why Does a Single Firefox Tab Take Almost 1.5GB RAM?
For a single tab? I wonder how much the telemetry takes up...
syeare··on Why Does a Single Firefox Tab Take Almost 1.5GB RAM?
Truly intriguing! A core2duo+4GB RAM in 2026?!?!!!

Can you elaborate on your experience? I can't imagine 20tabs being smooth on 8GB with the modern "web" being whst it is today, let alone 4GB! Unless there is only text files and plain HTML in those 20 tabs???

syeare··on One town's scheme to get rid of its geese
Canadian geese, invasive pests? American white buff geese, who get ran out by aforementioned?
syeare··on Wife Acceptance Factor
Maybe it was meant as humor rather thsn a jab or insult?
syeare··on Roblox defends expanded age‑checks after parents raise concerns over errors
It really is true... Die a hero or live long enough to become a villain

Somebody please kill this cancer

We need open-source+extensible and maybe a federated BLOCKS-focused building/game platform alternative (ie LEGO rip) with the best legal team possible so it can blow up without worry

syeare··on Man charged after allegedly throwing Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman's home
Free our boi he's no arsonist
syeare··on Systemd has not implemented age verification
> This is a lie: the facts are simply that the systemd users database has gained an optional "date of birth" field, which the desktop environments may use or not as they deem appropriate. Of course there is no "identity verification" or requirements to provide any data, which in any case would not be shared beyond authorized local applications.

I understand this might lack nuance, but this looks like the setting up of a groundwork for an age verification system

I get and agree the point ( that its the families that should be managing access), but how much further are we willing to allow these circus festival clowns called "politicians" to restrict freedom of access to the internet under the guise of "oh noesss we must protecc teh chillren!!"?

All these acts like Stop child abuse exploitation or COPPA or whatever nonsense, Im sure all of us in the hacker news crowd understand and can agree that its just pretend/fictional names to gather public consensus/approv to furtjet lock down the internet

syeare··on Systemd has not implemented age verification
Poetteringware!!!1 Lol
syeare··on US expected to send thousands more soldiers to Middle East, sources say
There's still people out there that believe the west is a "democracy"? People really think voting, elections, politics in general is even real and not a reality show/circus act put on for the masses?
syeare··on Kagi is contemplating the removal of the assistant from its professional tier
Even after you pointed out specific mistakes, I fail to understand how the writing is indicative of AI over-reliance?
syeare··on Italy Railways Sabotaged
At least on this Materialistic app available on F-Droid, all those comments are flagged and unable to be seen

Its absolutely senseless to take on a position on something when not knowing what's coming from both sides

I'd presume this place to be frequented by those who would also find it similarly foolhardy to be taking a stance on an issue when not all parties are privy to the same objectivity/impartiality (in terms of information and the different sides of the story)

syeare··on Zuckerberg says Meta will build a data center the size of Manhattan in AI push
Better make your own powerplant Unsurprising if they steal from the same source as taxpayers' electricity, get subsidized for it because "jobs" (that no one gets), finally resulting in raised bills for the rest
syeare··on Are a few people ruining the internet for the rest of us?
Is it really the "few people" ruining it for the "rest of us"? Or is it moreso that the "rest" of the people are ruining it for the "few of us"?
syeare··on Ask HN: How have you shared computers with your young child (~3 to 5)
The only people who wouldn't agree with what brudgers is saying are obviously people who didn't have bad parents (bad, as in, resorting to any type of abuse because they are incapable of even sorting out their own thoughts and emotions)
syeare··on Thorium - A long-abandoned US nuclear technology is making a comeback in China
A bit of a harsh sentiment, no?

Tbf after reading the article, it doesn't mention why thorium was abandoned in the 50s/60s Article doesn't mention how China's new thorium reactors are different and/or how they extended existing designs

Yeah, true, article doesn't really tell us anything new

I can't explain it, no unfortunately

But what about someone maintaining and developing, say, an obscure e-mail client?

syeare··on Old Timey Code and Old Timey Mono Fonts
Spotted my kin!

What is it that makes slashed zeroes so nuch more appealing than the other kinds of "zeroes"? Slashed zeroes are definitely much better than those nasty dotted inverse donut zeroes

How does a dot in a zero even make any kinda logical sense? It's like a piece of dough floating in midair in the center of a donut

Dotted zeroes [insert copypasta] bad

I don't even know why I'm so obsessed with the slash in zeroes

syeare··on Your phone isn't secretly listening to you, but the truth is more disturbing

syeare··on Apple needs a Snow Sequoia
The actual argument would be people voting with their wallets and moving away from the Apple ecosystem, but this something impossible at least in the USA due to these bullshit "blue bubbles"
syeare··on Show HN: A personal YouTube frontend based on yt-dlp
Can you iterate on that? I would like to understand what you are saying. By jail time, do you mean advertisers on YouTube have done such a malicious thing? YT did not block these efforts?
syeare··on Deanonymization of owners of anonymous Telegram channels
After that bullshit police state arrest in France, I doubt Durov cares enough to fix holes like this
syeare··on ImRAD is a GUI builder for the ImGui library
What does this comment mean? Since not particularly well-versed in programming, all I understood was that this project has something that can read data? What is impressive about a tool that can read C++?

Would appreciate if someone can explain, thanks!
