hopefully china does it and hynix burns in hell
it has kinda worked for nuclear weapons
and it's not sufficient anyways. even with NX you could have the attacker control a function pointer you call. in any sufficiently complex program you'll have enough widgets to build anything you want just out of data.
code and data are the same thing. whatever inputs your system receives is "code" that your application interprets, just like your application is the code that the CPU interprets. turtles all the way down.
they aren't as intelligent as a human, but they can throw shit at the wall faster, and get something that sticks faster. they are superhuman in areas that require trial and error, like hacking.
everyone stopped talking about the Turing test once ChatGPT came out and broke right through it while still being very very dumb. AGI is just too blurry to define.
as the console product line, it's just dead, nobody knows which xbox is the old or the new one, microsoft themselves probably can't figure that out too.
the issue with game execs is not just that they don't understand game development, but software development in general. game execs absolutely love scope creep. then they try to fight the growing scope by adding more people onto the project - when it's common knowledge that makes the project even more delayed. if you can't deliver a project, you have to deliver less, not add employees.
writing this I thought this might be why live service games fare better. they force the modern agile software engineering into games. the exec gets feedback and kpi's quickly. you could try to scream some sense into them however much you want, but they won't accept that their idea is crap until it's released and the sentiment rating on their dashboard goes down in response.
the exec has absolutely no imagination or domain knowledge. without the constant feedback, they just fly blind because they can't comprehend anything but the numbers in the spreadsheet. in a multi-year development process, until you deliver the project, there's no numbers to steer you. you need an opinionated director, auteur, not an excel monkey.
Need an ambulance? Let me escalate to the department that will escalate you to a department that will dispatch the ambulance in 5-10 business days.
The machine doesn't need this extra cruft.
fix the alarms? I only had one false fire alarm in my life. and thankfully zero real ones. it's possible.
do fire drills? if alarms get ignored, and you can't reduce the false-positive rate, then introduce fake alarms and monitor the response?
not really... search was great in 2008 or 2014, but not in 2022. seo spammers won by then, and their writing was even worse than opus 5.
I remember that the sites google shown before were sites you could get lost in. often they were communities. often they were sites actually written by an enthusiast of a subject.
these sites died. I wonder whether google was the victim or the culprit. the death of these sites did end up making their product worse. however, any site that actually hooked you meant less ad revenue for google. google wants you to come back from the result, since that's a second chance for you to click the ad. a result you come back from however is inherently a bad result.
the most misleading thing I read this week
like pee bottles.
never have i felt a computer react so quickly. CRTs have much less lag than LCDs.
I recently started a new job that forced me to wake up at 6:30AM and it was fucking misery. last weekend though was the DST change, effectively shifting everything one hour forward and oh god I finally feel alive and capable of doing anything but sleeping
> the users don't focus on this menu much
to
> therefore we need to make this menu as large as possible
shouldn't the conclusion have been "the start menu is so great the user doesn't even need to focus on using it". it feels like desperately trying to make the data fit the predefined conclusion, despite the data screaming and kicking.
