task_queue··on SIGAINT email service targeted by 70 bad TOR exit nodes
I've continued to inflict Linux upon myself as my main (laptop!) OS for 12 years now, but you're deluded if you think it has any place on normal human being's computer. Windows works and is expected.

Expecting the user to spend hours/days learning a new system for reasons that aren't their own is bad assumption to make.

task_queue··on EFF to Congress: Stop the Cybersurveillance Bills
People have a blind faith in the watch guards and a natural tendency to hand them the rope necessary to be hung with.

I have a friend in the middle of a divorce. Her husband works for their cell provider. He has harassed her with allusions to "keeping tabs" on her because of his position of power.

When you point the panopticon inwards you realize just how scary unfiltered communication and location data taken out of context can be and how dangerous someone with malicious intent and access to that data can be.

No one should have that power over someone. It certainly shouldn't be consolidated into the hands' of any group of people, either.

task_queue··on Homeless Millennials Are Transforming Hobo Culture
I will never understand where this vitriolic self-righteousness comes from.

What gives you the right to classify people as parasites? I don't think paying taxes gives you that right in any circumstance.

task_queue··on FBI overstated forensic hair matches in nearly all trials before 2000
Conviction rates matter. Also the justice system "congestion" that judges and prosecutors are always pointing to as an excuse for their failure to uphold real justice.
task_queue··on Before Cuomo fund-raiser, state appeared to fast-track tax credit
Reminder that the Cuomo campaign asked Sony for $50k.

There is a $5k campaign contribution limit to prevent corporate interests from ruling the political sphere.

They were aware of this limitation, so they used their corp email to ask employees to contribute to the goal, because Cuomo supports actions that benefit the company itself.

It is arguable whether this is legal or not, but it certainly is against the ideal behind the limitation.

task_queue··on FBI conducts search by disrupting Internet service, posing as repairmen [pdf]
A bad a precedent (government sidestepping obtaining a warrant by just shutting down utilities and posing as repairmen) was shot down by a district court despite the magistrate judge suggesting that it didn't violate the 4th amendment because the defendant was not coerced/put under duress into consent. The district judge thought otherwise.
task_queue··on WikiLeaks publishes 30,000 leaked Sony documents
The difference here is that I'm not a powerful organization that employs hundreds of thousands and has influenced international/domestic law and trade policy.
task_queue··on WikiLeaks publishes 30,000 leaked Sony documents
The reason for the link is _right_ there in the intro, assuming you clicked the link.

Sony has been engaged in some questionable activity with questionable organizations making questionable deals. The reason is transparency so illegal activity can be exposed.

task_queue··on WikiLeaks publishes 30,000 leaked Sony documents
If you read a follow up email here: https://wikileaks.org/sony/emails/emailid/49813

You will be aware of the damning evidence. They intended to donate $50k. They are subject to a $5k donation limitation. They are deliberately skirting the law.

task_queue··on WikiLeaks publishes 30,000 leaked Sony documents
And then connecting it with this email reveals the damning evidence: https://wikileaks.org/sony/emails/emailid/49813

Publicly they were individual donations. This shows the intent of the group to donate a sum of $50k along with detailing how they were going break their donation up to skirt the law.

They deliberately structured their donations to sidestep the $5k limitation to campaigns they're subject to.

Just because you don't know what you're looking for doesn't mean there isn't anything to find.
task_queue··on WikiLeaks publishes 30,000 leaked Sony documents
There are limitations on donations. They wanted to donate $50k. By law, they can't do that. So they manipulated how they donated that sum to circumvent that law.
task_queue··on WikiLeaks publishes 30,000 leaked Sony documents
It's quite obvious what they're doing, but being blind to nuance and expecting powerful people to be acting in good faith in the face of contradictory evidence go hand in hand.
task_queue··on Why We Are No Longer Developing for the iPad
I believe this is similar to Microsoft's driver model, where at the end of the day, they decide what's signed or not and thus what can hook into the kernel.

Stallman was prescient.

task_queue··on Python 2, Python 3, Debian and Porting
Because Python 2 will be phased out in 5 years.
task_queue··on Python 2, Python 3, Debian and Porting
At this point in time, the upcoming EoL in 5 years should be pressure enough to start new projects in Python 3 when possible.
task_queue··on Python 2, Python 3, Debian and Porting
I don't know a sysadmin on this planet that dreams of using Ruby as systems scripting language. That sounds like hell.

Again, its the trade off between a relatively simple port and adopting a new language with different standards, technical difficulties and culture.

task_queue··on Why We Are No Longer Developing for the iPad
Nothing much has changed in the past couple of years. Wine is still a good go to option if your Windows application will work with it correctly.
task_queue··on Python 2, Python 3, Debian and Porting
You're being downvoted because writing Debian's system infrastructure in a language whose spec isn't finalized or is not well known is a Bad Idea when other options exist.

Python 2 -> Python 3 is a trivial port compared to adopting a new language and the technical/cultural baggage that come with it.

task_queue··on Yes, You Can Catch Insanity
That is true, but "any malady of the mind" is a blanket statement encompassing severe depression.

It gives the impression that the medications are not significantly better than placebo for any mental illness, when in fact they are significantly effective for certain mental illnesses.

task_queue··on Yes, You Can Catch Insanity
> These are the medicines the pharmaceutical industry have been pushing on us for decades to treat any malady of the mind, and they have been proven to be barely more effective than placebo treatments.

Weird, the studies where they're given to sufferers of severe depression and anxiety say otherwise.

task_queue··on DEA Orchestrates Disinformation Campaign to Conceal Surveillance Powers
Assuming it's actually end-to-end encrypted, it is susceptible to MITM attacks because you're trusting a centralized source with key exchange and verification.

You cannot perform an audit on your own. You are trusting that you received the correct keys without a way to verify identities outside of the network.

That is not secure. Please read http://blog.quarkslab.com/imessage-privacy.html

task_queue··on DEA Orchestrates Disinformation Campaign to Conceal Surveillance Powers
Can you provide the source code that shows the implementation of the end-to-end encryption? Can you verify that you REALLY have Alice's public key and she has yours? Or are you trusting that the keys you're receiving from Apple's network belong to exactly who Apple says they do?

White paper on the topic: http://blog.quarkslab.com/imessage-privacy.html Consumer grade article: http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/10/contrary-to-public-c...

Lavabit offered in-network public key encryption for its users. Its implementation was faulty and investigators only needed an SSL key to get the information they wanted from suspects. They also ordered Lavabit to keep operating under the pretense that they were secure. http://www.infoworld.com/article/2609583/encryption/how-secu...

Skype was advertised as "end-to-end" encrypted AND peer-to-peer networked for years, until it was slowly exposed as a lie. Skype's content is not end-to-end encrypted and the network is centralized. http://arstechnica.com/security/2013/05/think-your-skype-mes...

task_queue··on Your pain reliever may also be diminishing your joy
Formulations with ibuprofen and other less toxic NSAIDs exist, though they all have their drawbacks. Look for them. There's really no reason to be ingesting Tylenol if you don't have to.
task_queue··on New Chinese Cyberattacks: What’s to Be Done?
We could dramatize what's been going on for decades as something new and urgent and then pass tomes of legislation handing trillions to the DHS and intelligence agencies.
task_queue··on Show HN: SubNotify.me – Job Alerts for Substitute Teachers
Wrote this for my girlfriend and mom, both are substitute teachers. Helped the former land a full-time position at a school down the road. Thought other people might find it useful.

It hooks into AesopOnline, a teacher placement agency that many districts around the country use, to send SMS and email notifications as new jobs become available.

I built it on Python 3 and Flask, writing message queues and such from the ground up as a learning experience. Slapped a Bootstrap front-end on it and called it a day (not really it's never finished).

task_queue··on DEA Orchestrates Disinformation Campaign to Conceal Surveillance Powers
Apple is still subject to NSLs, and like Lavabit, can be coerced into operating in such a way that they're able to provide message contents to authorities while advertising that they are in fact secure.
task_queue··on DEA Orchestrates Disinformation Campaign to Conceal Surveillance Powers
It does not imply that, it implies misdirection.
task_queue··on The Whitehouse’s New Executive Order on Cyber Crime Is (Unfortunately) No Joke
The leashes are the words of the law and their ultimate interpretation. Everything follows from those words.

Transparency and good faith are ideals that are rare in powerful bureaucracies. Expecting those with the most power in the world to act in good faith is a scorpion and frog tale.

task_queue··on Automakers Say You Don’t Really Own Your Car
More than likely you'll be absolutely shocked at the code that your car depends on to function (read the Toyota unintended acceleration court documents).

Opening that interface or code turns that black box of deniability into potential evidence of shitty practices leading to failure in what should be safe, correct and easily tested modules.

Think global variables, 4k line functions, goto/jumps, completely ignoring industry standard practices like MISRA, etc.

It's horrifying.
