task_queue··on Terms of Service, Didn't Read
I agree completely. I don't know what the OP was getting at.
task_queue··on EyeWitness app lets smartphones report war crimes
What will they do to mitigate that fact that the war criminals will be doing network traffic analysis?

Pulling updates from the Play Store for the app or pinging its service while being at the wrong place at the wrong time might cause you to disappear.

task_queue··on Terms of Service, Didn't Read
An end-user of software licensed under the GPLv3 doesn't ever have to read the license until they decide to modify and share it.

At that point they should be well-versed in reading licensing agreements because they're touching others' source code.

task_queue··on What Poverty Does to the Young Brain
I desperately want to agree, but this is HN.

The other week someone suggested an app that gamified escaping homelessness as a solution to homelessness.

task_queue··on What Poverty Does to the Young Brain
You are looking in the wrong direction for a solution.

The world doesn't need another * social app.

task_queue··on Holding Your Breath in India
Type 4 the type where you have no idea what you're talking about with regards to British rule in India

Type 5 is where you start enumerating during your rant to make it seem as you have a point beyond "never mind mass murders, famines.. colonialism sure did a lot for culture"

task_queue··on TTIP explained: The secretive US-EU treaty that undermines democracy
You're railing against a point I didn't make.

You can have a "class consciousness" without pulling out the hyperbole and Stalin card.

This consciousness is what afforded us civil rights, granted us a safe work place, an eight hour work day, labor rights and bought us social programs that keep people from dying in the streets.

Somehow these "class conscious" revolutionaries didn't let society devolve into chaos.

It's this consciousness that we need to remind ourselves and those with power of our worth. Otherwise, we'll continue to get fucked over. No one will offer to make us concessions that we never had the power to ask for.

The majority of the third world and anyone who wasn't born into the right religion/race/family in the first world would like to have a word with your first point, though.

I guess we shouldn't realize nor negotiate from our position in society since being run by plutocrats isn't so bad because you say so.

Good plutocrats try to make sure their population has "just enough" that they don't rally in the streets with guns. Relying on the goodwill of these people is an absurd expectation.

task_queue··on TTIP explained: The secretive US-EU treaty that undermines democracy
Until third parties get the funding and backing by powerful people that already run the nation, they aren't able to produce a truly viable candidate.

They won't get the exposure. They'll be pigeonholed as the joke candidate by the well-funded machines that have interest in making sure you don't consider leaving the two-party system that's worked well for them.

Needing excessive funding and backing by elites to really be considered a candidate implies that only those who promise to uphold their interests will be portrayed as being a legitimate choice.

The option for a third party is in the specification, but we've purposely implemented it in such a way that power remains in the hands of the few.

I'm the oil company that will continue to sell oil until wells pump out dust, destroying the environment in the interim, but its okay because we've diversified and have many contingency plans.

Have you seen our catalog of contaminate filters for your home's closed air filtration system?

If you subscribe now, you can have access to our Above The Clouds solar farm. Yields on surface farms have decreased considerably as the out of control heating of the atmosphere blocks out the sun.

They may be reprehensible, but they aren't your hard line Fascists either.
task_queue··on TTIP explained: The secretive US-EU treaty that undermines democracy
Lack of solidarity, co-opted fronts, infiltration and neutralization of non co-opted organizations by economic interests and easy fractures among the economic class based on ethnicity/religion/arbitrary differences have historically been great ways at keeping a population from gaining a consciousness about their situation as a whole.
task_queue··on TTIP explained: The secretive US-EU treaty that undermines democracy
Elections don't make a democracy. They had elections in Your Favorite Totalitarian State, too.
task_queue··on FBI: Companies should help us ‘prevent encryption above all else’
If you're justifying your program by spending its resources trying to goad people with mental handicaps and other lowest common denominator people into committing terrorism, what have you accomplished?

Any organization with a degree of security, one a nation would consider an adversary, is aware of the dangers agents pose with infiltration.

task_queue··on Let Snowden Come Home
This is very interesting, do you have any sources of information where I can read up about this? Even a general site where information like this is curated.

task_queue··on Mobile app startups are failing like it’s 1999
I don't buy it. This is the same argument I've heard from Node.js proponents.

You'd be offloading your development and debugging to a third party tool that will always be staggered behind native development.

You'd be translating your code through a shitty javascript transpiler.

You'd end up hiring javascript programmers with little to no domain knowledge to make apps that feel less than native.

You'd end up having interface with the platform anyway, but through a JS shim.

You'd be putting all your eggs in one basket on a platform known for killing off its dependents. Apple doesn't like what React Native is doing to its ecosystem? You're shit out of luck when they pull you from their market.

Hire a competent person with the relevant experience instead of trying to shoehorn javascript into every problem domain. You'll end up hiring one anyway.

You had a point with your first paragraph but fell flat with sentence one of your second paragraph.

I've never seen police unions on the chopping block. After the most recent crisis, teacher unions and other government worker unions were paraded around as needing to be fixed.

Why put yourself in that position publicly? Modify the code base and exclude the copyrighted content.

Are the titles being sold by their holders on different platforms? Most likely.

The Wii had library of GBA games that were available for purchase.

ROM sites are taken down all the time.

task_queue··on How America Overdosed on Drug Courts
I'm a former drug abuser. I'm white, so I got away with too much I shouldn't have by the legal system.

1. Absent a legal system, a person still has to live in society. To be healthy a person must maintain themselves and their place in society.

Drugs perturb the systems in your brain that give you that ability and awareness. Many drug users already have history with mental illness and make that awareness aspect worse.

2. It is a powerful respiratory depressant. There is a fine line between pleasure and not breathing. It's very easy to tip the scale, especially if you're injecting it directly without an 'undo' switch (vomitting). You lose the ability to care because you're chasing a fleeting feeling.

Tolerance plays a huge part. Someone taking a 10mg hydrocodone pill for the first time might end up higher than the guy who just slammed 5 grams of heroin just to be well for the next few hours. If the first guy did 1/100th of that he might be dead.

Time, purity, dosage and most of all the unknowable limit your body has play the biggest role here.

Opiates combined with other respiratory depressants = death. Alcohol, cough medicines, anxiolytics and sleep aids can kill you if combined with opioids.

Methadone is a wager an addict makes with a professional. It's dangerous (it's a r. depressant), it's addictive and it fucking sucks. But for some people it beats living like trash to find the next high.

For most non-hardcore addicts, methadone would be a terrible thing.

I agree, it was just as obtuse as "free" when other words would have conveyed their intent better.

"Libre software" attempted to bring the distinction to the English term without using English, so English speakers never really used it.

It's the L in FLOSS.
