tater··on NYTimes Objective–C Style Guide
It's a marketing ploy to get you to buy larger (wider) monitors in order to avoid line wrapping.

My only gripe about developing on a 13" MBP is not being able to have 2 buffers side by side without wrapping the snot out of half the lines.

tater··on Apple Developer Website Update
I'd let them slide on that if they had the brass to announce it was running on CoreData.
tater··on Apple Developer Website Update
Theres a security researcher commenting on techcrunch claiming he's responsible for the breach here http://fyre.it/tjlVmC.4

His proof uploaded to youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q000_EOWy80

tater··on Apple Developer Website Update
I bet Forstall did it.
tater··on Apple Developer Center still down
Forstall has the backups.
tater··on Thanks For The Identity Theft, Yahoo
Hope someone grabs Palin's old (compromised) email. This decision by Yahoo is a troll's wet dream.
tater··on Apple Dev Center outage
I'm told this was scheduled.
tater··on Ask HN: OSX Screen Capture Software
Grab (cmd+shift+4) for capturing images. QuickTime for video.

No 3rd party app needed.

tater··on This Apple Ad Is Nuts: How Our Devices Turn Us Away From Reality
The behavior is nuts, not the ad. The ad is perfectly in tune with the unfortunate reality. Today people engage more with gadgets and are obsessed with capturing everything on camera.

While Apple and other manufacturers are the cause of the former, it's all the startups feeding on people's narcissistic tendencies thats caused the later, and in my opinion, the worst part.

We're not going to look back at this in the future and shake our heads at the absurdity of the ad, but the absurdity of the culture.

tater··on Terminals: A Rant
And pbcopy/pbpaste on OSX.
tater··on Ask HN: I'm quadriplegic – can you help me with my security?
Using multiple keychains would also help.
tater··on Why I Still Choose Gentoo
I can't tell if this is satire or not, it's almost as if I'm reading http://funroll-loops.info/
tater··on New Scheme-Based GPU Programming Language
Not to mention GPUs have no stack, no recursion.
tater··on Snowden maintains NSA has access to company servers, so someone's lying
There's a difference between lying and carefully choosing your words.
tater··on Why I Left OpenBSD
Obligatory comment to remind people this is satire.
tater··on Apple Has Nothing To Say
FWIW, that's a market of only 300k people, who all learn norwegian and english fluently in school.
tater··on Marissa Mayer has been on a shopping spree, but is there any sign of a strategy?
The strategy is to appease wall street and shareholders. Doesn't matter what their plan is or what they do, as long as they have a plan and do something.

While somewhat rare for publicly traded companies, Amazon has shown that companies can float while prioritizing long term strategies above everything else.

tater··on Can one run a server & still maintain personal privacy?
Given you're on HN, you probably know a few people in the industry, ask around and try to find a 1U colo deal on unused rackspace (aka the brocolo). Get a cheap 1U atom server from supermicro, throw some disks in it and you're done.
tater··on Bart employee salaries CSV
Thats the strategy, divide and conquer, make the private sector hate the public sector, make the nonunion workers hate the union workers, etc. As soon as they have enough haters to form a critical mass, the hated group gets shit on and they repeat the process with the next group.
tater··on U.S. bugged EU offices, computer networks
The politicians might say nasty things and express outrage in public but nothing will change. EU is still in a recession hell and they're nothing Washington can't soothe over with a few checks.

Cash rules everything around me. CREAM get the money, dolla dolla bill yall.

tater··on Ask HN: advice on overcoming a programming plateau?
Learning new languages is just one dimension, learn new algorithms, learn new computational problems, learn high level APIs, learn low level stuff, learn how machines work at the bare metal level, learn how operating systems work.

Make things, make toys, make tools, make big projects, make oneliners.

Write new things, rewrite old things, fix shitty code you find on github, fix shitty code you wrote. fix bugs you find, increase performance of slow things.

tl;dr Get better by doing.

tater··on Learn C in Minutes
Learning C takes a bit more than learning than its syntax. Feeding someone this and telling them they now know C is a recipe for disaster. The "Best to find yourself a copy of K&R" line is the only line that should be there.
tater··on Choosing a Programming Language
Same for Objective-C. I disregarded the entire blog post as soon as I noticed.
tater··on Show HN: How to make brib^H^H^H^H auctions easy and profitable
One ^W would have been sufficient.
tater··on [dead]
I did something similar. I hustled to acquire the lawn mowing gigs for $30 per yard, then subcontracted the actual mowing part to my neighbor for $15 per yard. My parents were pissed when they found out. To this day I still think it was genius
tater··on "Getting started with Ember.Js is easy." - No it isn't
If only Apple did the same for OSX, its getting better, but theres still tons of examples that dont compile w/o several warnings, and usually haven't been converted to ARC.
tater··on I’m Sick of Tiny, Tiny Type
1280x800 13" non-retina MBP here, I prefer 12pt when reading, 10pt when writing code.
