tazu··on Mira Murati leaves OpenAI
Russia's debt to GDP ratio is 20%. The United States' debt to GDP ratio is 123%.
tazu··on OpenAI to remove non-profit control and give Sam Altman equity
It's probably because of the poorly-designed "flamewar detector" that censors posts if they are upvoted/downvoted too quickly. @dang explained it to me a few weeks ago[1] on another YC-related post that conveniently got scrubbed from the front page.

tazu··on Qualcomm Approached Intel About a Takeover in Recent Days
Setting aside the political reasons for less advertising revenue, it's still running and there are 200M DAU. Many ex-employees swore the servers would catch fire by now.
tazu··on Qualcomm Approached Intel About a Takeover in Recent Days
Letting 80% go seems to have worked for X.
tazu··on SQLite Transparent Compression
I used this to index and store a subset of Wikipedia's archive and it works great.
tazu··on Fair: A Go library for serving resources fairly
Does anyone have some real-world use cases for something like this? The algorithm is cool but I'm struggling to see where this is applicable.
tazu··on Postmark SMTP sending down for 8 hours due to SSL certificate expiration
"Any previously failed messages via SMTP would need to be retried."

8 hours is pretty awful.

tazu··on Lazarus Group laundered $200M from 25 crypto hacks to fiat
There is no cost, overall it all raises US GDP. Military lives are not considered.
tazu··on Correlating Ownership of Sites Protected by Cloudflare
I thought the non-random nameserver assignment was interesting. Seems like a flaw, actually.
tazu··on Lazarus Group laundered $200M from 25 crypto hacks to fiat
The American way is creating problems and selling solutions.
tazu··on US targets trade loophole used by ecommerce groups Temu and Shein
I doubt more than 2% of the fentanyl in the US comes direct from China. China just ships to Mexico, which makes it to the US through the wide open southern border.

tazu··on Breaking Down OnlyFans' Economics
Yes, it's misleading to share averages for power-law distributions. Median take home pay is probably $20 annually.
tazu··on The CIA-in-Chile Scandal at 50
Mike Pompeo told him it was a bad idea. Why would he do it this time? He'd pretty much have nothing to lose.
tazu··on The CIA-in-Chile Scandal at 50
There's a 50% probability that RFK Jr will be a part of the future administration, and I believe he is sufficiently motivated to force Trump to uphold his promise.
tazu··on The CIA-in-Chile Scandal at 50
It's promising that RFK Jr could potentially be in a future administration and push to declassify these documents[1]. It would really only take an executive order. He probably has enough of a chip on his shoulder to accomplish this.

tazu··on The CIA-in-Chile Scandal at 50
I am eagerly awaiting the complete declassification of the JFK assasination documents, which will further damage the CIA's reputation.
tazu··on Ask HN: Why is Pave legal?
It was at #3 for me and then suddenly demoted to the second page. It's pretty common for these touchy-YC threads.
tazu··on Ask HN: Why is Pave legal?
> Pave is a YC-backed startup

This thread is getting removed from the front-page in 3... 2...

tazu··on The Modern CLI Renaissance
> "take a screenshot of my webpage with Chrome | set it in isometric with nice shadow using Photoshop | send it on my iPhone Twitter app"

This is basically Apple Shortcuts. It would be nice to have a CLI interface for Shortcut "actions".

tazu··on The Modern CLI Renaissance
This is why Textualize[1] concerns me. I've tried a few of the applications using their framework, and they have noticable keypress latency. I didn't think it was possible to make a bloated TUI, but they have somehow succeeded. This might just be a Python thing because of the GIL, because VisiData[2] has the same problem. It's physically jarring to use VisiData because it's such a cool idea, but takes 500ms to register key presses in my 120hz terminal emulator.

It's reminiscent of scroll-jacking, excessive animation, and other web GUI bloat, just translated to TUIs.

tazu··on Project Hammer: reduce collusion in the Canadian grocery sector
> ~ an actual antitrust guy

So, unfirable? Essentially useless and beholden to little if any performance metrics?

tazu··on Pick Your Distributed Poison
I'm having a hard time understanding what this is about. Is it about Kubernetes tradeoffs?
tazu··on Browsing Hacker News in the Terminal
The keypress latency is infuriatingly noticable for me with Chrome + Sonoma. It's beautiful though!
tazu··on Voters' Yearning for a Dictator Is a Danger to the Country
> It's not enough simply to have elections.

The elected representatives also need the power/will to change things, which has unfortunately not been the case in my voting lifetime.

The King of England is technically the king on paper, but has 0.5% of the power Henry VIII had. President Biden has 1% of the power FDR had.

A lot of things, in the US at least, are more and more dictated by unelected (and unfirable) bureaucrats in agencies.

tazu··on Voters' Yearning for a Dictator Is a Danger to the Country
Yes, the administrative (deep) state sometimes needs a "rewrite".
tazu··on Faster Integer Programming
I'm a fan of including benchmarks in CI pipelines. The Windows developers should have a historical record [1] of the performance degradation and be forced to look at it daily.

tazu··on Faster Integer Programming
> We need more optimization in this industry.

The Windows 11 context menu lag (and overall Windows bloat) is a product of Conway's law. Microsoft creates bloated software because it's a monopoly. So, "optimization" in this case would essentially be antitrust action.

tazu··on I hate Stripe, so I'm going to build my own payment processor
I actually have the code written for my own payment processor (including crypto)--that's the easy part. The hard part is the money transmitter license fees, which are insane and make it impossible to bootstrap.
tazu··on QWERTY-Flip: The better keyboard layout your fingers already know
I was in college a few years ago and it was pretty common to see portable mechanical keyboards...
