If you have clicked into here wondering what is wrong with with me, the answer is I attempted to be arch or funny but am terrible at it. Or you are. No good way to tell.

I blame that one Jon Skeet dude for answering everything.

If only you were normal.

You can’t drown someone with fireworks.

I mean yeah. Maybe I’m a bit older than you but that’s not a wild thing to do.

I have, and will always have, a simple rule when evaluating job offers: can I pay my mortgage with that today? No one is feeding your broke neurologist based on future returns.

Don’t do the First Name Last Name thing and then get the ratio wrong.

If you’re saying he doesn’t, that’s a really strong argument for redistribution then, isn’t it? If he don’t need it, let’s spread the love around. And spare me the job creation story.

Oh, it’s you again, Earth-2 historian emeritus. Hard pass.

How have you quantified this that you are asserting it to me?

This is the worst philosophy course I have ever surveyed. Explain further. Your contention is that, given money people didn’t “earn” they will immediately do drugs?
tclancy··on Genie 4
Is your contention better graphics are implicitly better? Does this mean movies in color are better than any movie in black and white? Also, are kids an amorphous blob? How should I know what a kid might like better?

That would be a gotcha if anything else was making its way into theaters/ mass consciousness now. What are the highly anticipated movies? Spider-Man and a remake of some supposed epic from a while back.

This. Do instead of consume and we all get a little better off.

They are all capable of art. Sam Altman saying how things will be in the future of two mediums he doesn’t work in says something very loudly. You just have to choose which thing it is.

King Curtis said otherwise.

That last sentence is a great point. We are probably in a bubble here just by virtue of regularly visiting HN. Even at work in an AI department at what I think is a typical company, there is little to no opinion on models beyond correctness and cost.

Humans don’t need that? How many words have you taken in from all possible sources by the time you’re 18? And many of those words came with additional data due to tone of voice, inflection and context. And then some of those (in-person, filmed art) came with incredibly subtle data from body language and facial expressions. I think we take in a massive corpus of data every year. Think just of any book you re-read: why did you do it? Did you glean additional insight?

Is that due respect? That may be your perception of work now, but how many people have much of their self esteem bound up in the work they do at their current place? I want employees and coworkers like that. But what you’re talking about is both life under Late Stage Capitalism and also a bit of blindness as though someone being squeezed by the death of newspapers could just find a different newspaper job.
tclancy··on We should be more ambitious with the software we build
Ah interesting, one thing I worked a long while on but abandoned for the time being was an idea I had when working at a big SaaS company: a software historian in the same sense the military has field historians - to explain why decisions were made and to learn lessons over time. Might as well make it open in case it's useful to you or someone else who has a better idea. https://github.com/tclancy/antiquarian

Oh, ok. My account is only 14 years old there I think, so I have no idea. Couldn’t be the Overton Window though.

Nope, as long as you didn’t also read the blog posts about how your tiny site needs multi-region support and failover and went with a cloud provider that is happy to ingest whatever you got even if you didn’t explicitly sign up for that fee.

My account has my name on it. Maybe if multiple replies are from "ThrowawayWhatever" there's a reason for that, no?
