teaearlgraycold··on Memdoor: A team of 5 Qwen3.8-27B models beats Fable 5 on LiveCodeBench Hard
I distribute both https://huggingface.co/noisebridge/qwen3.8-27b-taiwan-pilled.

I was able to remove much of the CCP censorship from Qwen 3.8 27B for around $90 using a LoRA. I multiplied the LoRA in permanently and listed it on HuggingFace.

The cost was approximately $80 for generating synthetic data and $10 to create and integrate the LoRA.

teaearlgraycold··on Through Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart taught us the measure of a man
As an uninformed idiot my guess is we have more than enough compute in various labs to run a sentient model. But I doubt any models we’re currently running could qualify.

Kind of like how we could have ran Qwen 3.8 27B 20 years ago on an expensive computer. The technology to make it happen, assuming you knew exactly what was required, existed back then.

teaearlgraycold··on We ran AI agent swarms in Minecraft and Mindustry
The human body has the ability to automate some muscular movements so the brain is out of the loop. Maybe these LLMs should be allowed to write in a small DSL that can trigger events out-of-band (something like "Oh fuck there's a spider, I'll set up a click spam loop and check in every 500ms").
teaearlgraycold··on Patrick Stewart has died
One of the celebrity deaths I actually care about. Rest in peace.
teaearlgraycold··on AlpineBSD
> AlpineBSD is an operating system based on the NetBSD kernel with a userspace inspired by Alpine Linux and the objective of making it possible to use as little AI-generated software as possible.

Fucking get over yourself.

teaearlgraycold··on Mac Studio M5 Ultra 512GB Officially Released
Release date? I know someone that has one right now.
teaearlgraycold··on Mac Studio M5 Ultra 512GB Officially Released
Might even work as a basic Facebook machine.
teaearlgraycold··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
I think the rumors are the M6 and then later M7 Pro/Max will be put into a new chassis with a touchscreen and no notch.
teaearlgraycold··on SIMD-accelerated computer vision on a $2 microcontroller
Similar class of chip, but I use the rp2350 to perform computer vision with LiDAR to detect when people leave dishes in a sink and beep angrily at them.
teaearlgraycold··on Anthropic S-1
> if they go to $20T, we're all fucked

Maybe I’m naive but I expect any kind of “we’re just taking over the world now” event with any AI company will be met with enough resistance from 99.99999% of the world’s population that they’ll have to make it a sweet deal for us if they want to survive.

teaearlgraycold··on Can we replace a $150k Looker with a bucket of HTML files?
Damn sounds like easy money.
teaearlgraycold··on Run full iOS 16.5 firmware on Android Devices
No. We should be very bold.
teaearlgraycold··on Jailbreaking the Switch 2
Interestingly I've seen Claude get stopped when I asked it to reverse engineer my Steam Frame's firmware and then it restarted the process on its own because it's my own hardware and finished the job without further interruptions.
teaearlgraycold··on Someone behind the software
I exaggerate, but many of the examples will be code and whether it passes static analysis, or compiled code and the original source (which would teach it how to reverse engineer), etc.
teaearlgraycold··on Someone behind the software
I don't think the other answers you're getting are right at all. AI isn't good at product/design decisions because it's not as easy to generate trillions of objectively right/wrong examples in those other domains. The training data isn't there yet.

Another Claude-written article

teaearlgraycold··on I built a tool to track what AI leaders say and how their views change on video
I have a friend that’s working on a claim provenance database, starting with a focus on Wikipedia and news sources but ideally it could be applied to social media fire hoses as well.
teaearlgraycold··on OpenAI engineer arrested in bugging of executive conference room
Now this is the kind of wacky shit I want to see happening in corporate America. When are we going to see an action movie-style GPU heist? I want to see whole palettes of GPUs stolen out of box trucks.
teaearlgraycold··on Leaving Tech
There was an article like a year ago about how AI was making software engineers unemployable, with a single engineer as their case study. Except the guy lived in rural NY state and only wanted to work remote.
teaearlgraycold··on China Overtakes U.S. For First Time as Top Spender on R&D in 2024
Sounds like a horrible idea. You don't need to be in the #1 fastest growing country to have a good life and Asian work culture seems miserable.
teaearlgraycold··on Making big downloads resumable in Firefox
Well the AI cares of course.
teaearlgraycold··on Janas: Run LLMs larger than RAM by streaming experts from SSD
My self hosted LLM runs at 60-ish tok/s and does great at agentic tasks. I think that’s about the threshold where it stops feeling annoyingly slow.
teaearlgraycold··on NYC's "Click to Cancel" rule is now in effect
LLMs have already ingested that code as training data.
teaearlgraycold··on The gap in shared understanding of LLM capability is widening
Definitely. For now I'm making friends with lots of very capable people - it's not as easy to do that outside of a hub like SF.

> I think the amount of protectionism we’ll see could be absolutely enormous because corporations aren’t capable of altruistic attitudes.

On some fronts they will be powerless to stop the changes. I look forward to drinking the tears of IP owners when breaking through their DRM and recovering their source code is just a matter of sharing a model ID, prompt, and hyper parameters. Reverse engineer NVidia's firmware and drivers. Decompile and port Nintendo's latest console's operating system. We may soon find ourselves in a world where tasks like that are achievable in a few days on consumer hardware.

teaearlgraycold··on The gap in shared understanding of LLM capability is widening
I'm a rare individual that has consistently made choices to earn less money in order to have more enjoyment. I would clock fewer hours than they wanted me to during college for my internships, I left a FAANG to go back to startups, I quit a startup to work on volunteer work and try to bootstrap a business.

At multiple jobs I've noted that I felt the pay should have been less. Not so that the employers could take a bigger slice of the pie (in fact, my preference is to be in an anarchist co-op, but I understand that's a wild take and might be terrible in practice). My hope was that we could filter for people that genuinely want to do the work and take on fewer people that were there for the money. At the same time more money is more better. And I like having money. It's complicated.

As I've said many times before, I didn't come to Silicon Valley to get paid. I came here to make computers do cool things alongside other people. I need income to do that, but I try to make sure I'm in a situation where the income isn't something I need to think about all of the time. If you're doing mercenary work that's not possible.

teaearlgraycold··on A Remote Employee Refused 160 Webcam Photos a Day. Her Employer Fired Her
Good advice. But most work computers I’ve used were handed to me fresh from the Apple Store and they requested I wipe them before returning at the end of my employment. Not everyone works in places with an IT department, device management systems, etc.
teaearlgraycold··on Artificial Insanity
I suspect people are afraid of change and hide behind truths like “it’s not conscious”. It’s not. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a force to be reckoned with.
teaearlgraycold··on Artificial Insanity
LLMs have genuinely modeled systems purely through training on natural language descriptions of those systems. It’s a massive lesson and an answer to the Chinese room thought experiment. I think that’s reasonable to label as intelligence and goes far beyond a stochastic parrot.
teaearlgraycold··on AI agents in a stand-up call
This makes me want to get a job just to be able to run this with my coworkers.
