temp0826··on I'm so bad at billiards that I ended up in the hyperbolic plane [video]
Shooting pool with dmt entities right here
temp0826··on FreeDNS
I guess it could be seen as a relic considering most registrars/cdns/hosts are a "full package" now. In the days of old that wasn't exactly the case; where you bought your domain name, where you controlled your dns, and where your systems lived could all be different entities. Nowadays there are still reasons to do so...more control and less centralization are some. Not everyone wants to be under the thumb of the Amazons/Googles/Cloudflares.

temp0826··on Starcraft: Ashfall
This is the second (probably vibecoded?) game in the last few days that I've seen using blizzard ip (the other being d2survivors.lol)
temp0826··on Hole Punch: Sling your spaceship around gravitational fields
Being able to actually drag a hole makes it a little easier as well..! (Didn't even realize that was a thing as it was broken on mine...playing on desktop now)
temp0826··on What It's Like to Work in One of America's Data Centers
> blood donations to the server gods

It really bothered me that for how much enterprise gear costs, the manufacturers couldn't be bothered to deburr the edges of rails/servers/etc.

temp0826··on On Really Trying (2009)
I've worked at an ayahuasca retreat center the last few years and have worked with several of what I'd consider very successful people. What I've noticed is that there are a couple types- those who are successful despite their traumas and those who are successful because of their traumas. The people I've seen successful because of their traumas tend to have difficulty making real progress (which sometimes comes off has actually having wonderful experiences...possibly all projections or other forms of dissociation/resistance). I think with them there is a subconscious fear that if they heal, they will lose the drive that made them "successful". It's a tough pill to swallow. (The other camp tends to do really well, continues to be successful with even more appreciation and compassion, despite difficult experiences if they decide to face their traumas).
temp0826··on We built our house for LAN parties (2024)
"Invite only", ok I get they're rich but I wonder about the airbnb potential for recouping some of that cost.
temp0826··on Don't Use a gmail.com Address
I've been a proton user for a while but have always shied away from their other offerings...feels like too many eggs in one basket to use them for both email and password management (things I consider to be the most critical of all services I use). Vpn as well! Am I being paranoid? It would be nice to not pay for 3 separate services but I have kind of a blockage about it
temp0826··on Models Don't Go Rogue
Pfhor what reason?
temp0826··on Introducing Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS
Just mentioned in another comment, but I'm not sure Firefox on iOS can actually use webkit content blockers? (I thought it could but have been using Orion exclusively for a while now)
temp0826··on Introducing Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS
I was under the impression that firefox could already use the Safari "content blockers" (as it uses webkit) like Firefox Focus and uBO Lite, but I'm not seeing that option actually. Been using Orion for a while now so not sure if that changed or I'm just misremembering it.
temp0826··on Afterglow: Run classic After Dark screen savers on modern macOS
I get the nostalgia factor, but is it actually a good idea to use screensavers on modern monitors rather than letting them sleep?
temp0826··on Online clinics and influencers are promoting Cialis as a longevity drug
Or eat more plants!
temp0826··on Tell HN: Cloudflare silently injects its analytics when you switch nameservers
The main reason anyone chooses cloudflare is for their CDN (which I suppose is a "reverse proxy"...not a way I'd refer to it but technically yes that's essentially what it's doing). If you don't need the CDN or any of the other fancy features there are plenty of straight DNS providers out there (and often provided by the registar these days).
temp0826··on Firefox for iOS now has a native adblocker
My current excuse? Android (the only current realistic alternative; I don't have the time nor care to fiddle with technical details on a device that I need to be a reliable tool. I'm not afraid of going deep on something less standard, Linux has been my daily driven OS for literally decades) is trash and untrustworthy in my experience. Browser extensions alone are not nearly enough to tip the scale for me to go back to it. As mentioned I use something that provides extension support already (from a browser that has far fewer developers working on it!), which is why I find it stupid that Mozilla won't figure out a way to do it themselves.
temp0826··on Firefox for iOS now has a native adblocker
What's the current excuse for not supporting extensions on iOS? Orion on iOS does and it's the reason I dropped FF ages ago.
temp0826··on Where did the old web go? We followed 657,607 links to find out

temp0826··on OpenAI’s head of ethics leaves less than a year after joining
Scapegoat team (when working for an obviously unethical company).
temp0826··on The Psychedelic Toad of the Sonoran Desert
I seriously don't know who would be unhappy about it. Pure 5-meo is a more reliable experience and no endangered toads need to be harmed. I don't know that one would even be able to liquify straight bufo properly to put in a cart for one...also pure 5-meo is maybe 3-5x more potent per weight so that probably makes it all easier too. Anyone pulling the "butttt it's unnaturalllll" card on this one is a fool.
temp0826··on _for-sale DNS records
This would have been great for a 2-letter .st domain I had been wanting for years (which appeared to be parked and just redirecting towards ticketmaster or something, with no contact info available). I was bummed about it for a long time, as the .st nic had a sale on 2-letter domains which made me want to pull the trigger, but it got scooped up a day or two prior apparently. I lucked out this year and saw they let it lapse! (I did have a yearly calendar reminder telling me to run whois :)
temp0826··on Tiny Black Holes May Be Exploding Stars Across the Milky Way
Picturing the crust of the earth being pulled off like an orange peel. But maybe seen too much scifi so it's probably a lot more boring :/
temp0826··on Could psilocybin be the key to treating anorexia?
I guess it depends on what "derail" means (meaning, do you actually know one's internal state and if they are happy?). Is something wrong with living alone in a rural area if you are happy? (This sounds great to me, for reference!).

I've watched hundreds of people take them in great containers with great support. It's never a good idea to make big changes right away, but we take small steps to adjust our lives so we can actually be happy. Yes, even if that is less "productive". Why do we do the things we do anyways?

temp0826··on Could psilocybin be the key to treating anorexia?
Why would you want your brain to ravel back up? I've worked at ayahuasca retreats and know many people who do it for a living (who are many of the most grounded people I know). Using these things in a therapeutic manner is a completely different thing than using them recreationally, might as well be a different substance. I'd guess those people who "permanently changed their brain" (whatever that means) were not in a context for actually healing.
temp0826··on Situational Awareness Down 67% in July in AI Stock Rout
When I read a title it helps me to determine whether I want to read it or not. This one is tricky and confusing because the company name is stupid and was probably picked for the clickbait potential. This is absolutely one where I read the comments before the link.
temp0826··on Decker, a platform that builds on the legacy of Hypercard and classic macOS
Constraints really breed creativity. The demoscene is probably my favorite example of it.
temp0826··on Show HN: Managing on-premise servers without Kubernetes
Kubernetes is only another application to me, it just manages containers (which probably run applications, which may be serving something, I guess?). Definitions have got a bit muddy since the advent of devops imo! (Maybe part of the weirdness is that this post is about an app that manages crons and files and other os-level stuff)
temp0826··on Show HN: Managing on-premise servers without Kubernetes
I'm still lost on how Kube has anything to do with server management (as someone who used to be a sysadmin and manage many servers, maybe my definition is just different?). Kubernetes doesn't solve any of the problems this does, it is so far from anything I would reach for to "manage" anything.
temp0826··on Show HN: Managing on-premise servers without Kubernetes
Why would you manage a server with Kubernetes in any case??
