tertius··on Ubiquiti: Enterprise NAS, Built on ZFS
So man makes company, man shares profitability of company with world to invest in. World complains they can't outvote man.
tertius··on Ubiquiti: Enterprise NAS, Built on ZFS
It's not bad. Great returns, company is extremely well run.

Ubiquiti is a giant publicly traded company... Read about the CEO, this won't happen.
tertius··on Garry Tan's Claude Code Setup
Ah yes, use only index fingers to type.

tertius··on The invisible seafaring industry that keeps the internet afloat
Level of annoyance = level of complaint. It's not weird, it's to be expected.
tertius··on Vultr is now claiming full perpetual commercial rights over all hosted content
Can you name one example where the context was not someone who was handling/processing/had the data as a part of their platform (i.e. FB) but rather a hosting provider where you've been burned assuming?

tertius··on FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank
This isn't an MBS problem. It's just a poorly performing asset problem.
tertius··on Rooftop wind energy innovation claims 50% more energy than solar at same cost
You're telling me there are just as many windows as there are wind turbines? Or are you lying with statistics?
tertius··on Subscriptions are out, refills are in
Just shop with a list and don't break the rule of not buying anything not on the list.
tertius··on Subscriptions are out, refills are in
If you signed a contract for a year with a clause that you could cancel before then if you move to an area without one of their gyms then this seems reasonable.

I've had my own experiences with gyms being hard to cancel. But in principle if I want an easy cancellation then I'll go month to month. If I have a 12 month contract I'm not going to cry if they resist when I want to cancel early...

I drive car wagon with a large spacious rear area. I limit my shopping trips, I buy in bulk.

You have to be very disciplined to get as efficient with Amazon. It's probably not really possible.

tertius··on No More “Insight Porn”
What's the best argument against your straw man here?
tertius··on No More “Insight Porn”
The answer is: Do both.

Often times not having the discipline to get up when you need to is the problem. And the solution is to tough it out.

So while you look for the cause, also work against the symptom.

For instance, quitting alcohol.

You need to quit, as well as try to look for the reason you're escaping into it. Do both.

tertius··on Arizona Mom Fights Abusive Prosecution by Department of Child Safety
What ifs could happen to anyone at any time.

What if I get HIV from a needle at a park bench? Do I need to inspect every park bench I sit on with UV light at night and leather gloves to be sure?

Where do you draw your line. Clearly your lines are different than others.

You should consider that their lines are based on rational investigation of the risk. Is yours?

I only see Bovrite.

tertius··on South Africa is running out of Marmite
Yes, a clearly superior product.
tertius··on South Africa is running out of Marmite
I cannot get this in the U.S. thus I have to wince while consuming marmite.

But you are 101% correct.

tertius··on How many days since a record-high temperature?
What is the probability of a 3 days in a year breaking high temps? I'm not sure how to read the daily high numbers here unless I know what number is bad/good.

How likely is it in any given year in the last 100 years that there wasn't a day or 3 breaking previous highs?

That seems like weather vs. climate to me intuitively, but I just don't know.

tertius··on Writing about my job: Software Engineer at Wave
I agree, I thought, given the URL, that this was the or one of the founders of effective altruism writing about their job as marketing.
tertius··on Tell HN: YouTube is banning accounts that support Ukraine
I do fall for the argument that oversight would be too costly given the sheer numbers. I don't like it though.

tertius··on Ubiquiti developer charged with extortion, causing 2020 “breach”
You have a route to stop that. You route 0.0.0.0/0 through wg0 and it doesn't matter if no traffic returns, it'll keep trying because that's the route that's been defined for wg0.

If you wanted to not go through wg0 (whether it can reach the other wireguard peer or not) you'd have to remove the routes first.
