tfang17··on Ask HN: Why is it so hard to disrupt Ticketmaster?
Read the book Ticket Masters. Explains how they've basically formed a monopoly via their merger with LiveNation - Ticket Master controls all major venues and thus all ticketing systems.

tfang17··on My First Impressions of Web3
Fails to address that users on centralized Web3 platforms have ability to exit platform, which isn’t an option in Web2.

I can transfer out an NFT from OpenSea ecosystem. I can transfer BTC out of Coinbase.

tfang17··on Why Web3?
Wonder what Fred thinks about having a single-shared database (Ethereum) vs. having multiple shared databases (SOLUNAVAX).

Valid criticism.

Axie may not be the end all be all, just a start towards a new future of digital ownership.

tfang17··on Why Web3?
A lot of HN hate on Web3... is the alternative to lay down and let big tech win?
tfang17··on “Play-to-Earn” and Bullshit Jobs
Axie is built on Ethereum, meaning in-game assets (NFTs) are technically transferrable off-platform.

Vitalik (creator of Ethereum) attributed one of his reasons for creating Ethereum to Blizzard taking away one of his in-game items in World of Warcraft in 2010:

"I was born in 1994 in Russia and moved to Canada in 2000, where I went to school. I happily played World of Warcraft during 2007-2010, but one day Blizzard removed the damage component from my beloved warlock's Siphon Life spell. I cried myself to sleep, and on that day I realized what horrors centralized services can bring. I soon decided to quit."

Would love to chat if so. We've seen a significant decrease and can't figure out why.

tfang17··on About the Urgency of Building Web3
We're still in the first inning of Web3.

Was at Coinbase in 2017 - am now waiting for more dev tooling to come out before jumping back in to the industry. The existing infrastructure is abysmal - equivalent of programming at the network layer.

Google and Amazon were built 2 decades after the invention of the internet. No need to FOMO in when the first programmable blockchain (Ethereum) is only 6 years old.

$1 is actually significantly cheaper than industry average. Most providers charge upwards of $5. We're able to cut costs by connecting you directly to end respondents and cutting out middlemen - our proprietary panel is over 1M respondents large now.
tfang17··on The most successful global tech bets are efficient and practical startups
Personally, I'm happy building a smaller company.

We're an LLC, so we're allowed to take draws at the end of each year vs. having to wait for a liquidity event (IPO or acquisition).

tfang17··on The most successful global tech bets are efficient and practical startups
Not making the argument that VC is bad across the board - companies that require a large amount of startup capital (fintech, space, deep tech) wouldn't exist without VC funding.

We've actually grown entirely through word of mouth. 0 ad spend after 2 years. We also happen to be a late entrant to the market. Companies like Swagbucks have been around since 2008.

tfang17··on The most successful global tech bets are efficient and practical startups
And to our employees!
tfang17··on The most successful global tech bets are efficient and practical startups
Yes, fragmented, but not a big enough market to make it worth it for a large entrant to spend blindly.
