thagerty··on Stop trying to sell me things while I'm trying to use the thing you already sold
I knew sales were taking over when the therapist started trying to upsell the massage service while I was on the table. Being in IT, I was probably desensitized to this in software, but it bothered me during what was supposed to be relaxing. It certainly helped me make a decision never to return.
thagerty··on Ask HN: Just turned 20 any advice to a you IT student
Build a diverse network made up of your peers while in school. Don't get caught up in the competition trap, thinking you always have to be better than the next guy to get ahead. It can work, but as they say, it's lonely at the top, and your ROI in building relationships with future leaders is high - something you'll never regret as you try to figure out which way the wind is blowing.
thagerty··on A SpaceX team is being brought in to overhaul FAA's air traffic control system
I don't know about the crossover of technical expertise, but this smells like the perfect hedge against the possibility that Congress gets the cajones to defund anything Musk is involved with. You get your funding involved/intertwined with public safety issues, and voila, funding requests are fast tracked.
thagerty··on Free green power in Sweden is crippling its wind industry
Probably is a non-issue, but there is a concerted effort to trash talk anything that might cut into you know who's profits.
thagerty··on Ask HN: I can't work in tech anymore. Help?
I doubt coding is the only thing you can do. A lot of us get into coding because we are good at problem solving. If you can define your long term goals, and make an inventory of your resources, I bet you, along with the help of your family, can figure out a solution. I quit my IT job at 35 and became a massage therapist. The act of building my own house at 30 gave me the confidence to try the career change. You can gain a lot of energy doing things you care about, even if it's hard work.
thagerty··on Why are religious teens happier than their secular peers?
Check back with them in 20 years.
thagerty··on Why do strawberries seldom live up to their promise?
Who the hell writes this crap?
thagerty··on Why do we need hedge funds and traders?
Wow. Keep your last question, turn it into an emphatic statement, and throw away the rest. Your education begins today. If you'd ever had a share of something the hedgies decided to short into oblivion, you would understand this.
thagerty··on 22% reduction in traffic emissions without quality of life decline is possible

thagerty··on How do I learn problem solving skill in programming?
The problem is that people tend to look for solutions before they truly know the problem. Practice searching for problems, at the lowest levels, again and again. This detective type skill will train your mind to break things down into manageable pieces. Solutions to problems that have been broken down far enough are usually self evident. But you are looking at end products, wondering why you can't solve anything. Does that make sense?
thagerty··on Train derailments occur roughly 1k times a year in the United States
Translation: We're never going to address rail union safety concerns.
thagerty··on Ask HN: How did you connect with passionate people?
First of all, you need to find out what you are passionate about, which has been suggested already, but then you have to put in the work. This will open many doors, as people you want to meet understand that learning is important, sharing their knowledge with you, maybe hoping to learn something from you. Don't be afraid to accept offers of collaboration from out of the blue, but keep your standards high. Even if you have to spend some time in a backup plan, keep your wheels moving and be ready to adapt when opportunities come along that fit your goals.
thagerty··on The Crypto Collapse and the End of the Magical Thinking That Infected Capitalism
cue the crickets
thagerty··on Nobody works, nobody gives a damn anymore because of socialism
Ah yes, the time tested socialism scapegoat. Just enough high schoolers swallowed the capitalist economics fallacies force fed during their formative years to make this a profitable pursuit for many decades after. But the tide is turning. Judging by the comments, we the peasants are figuring out what slavery looks like these days.
thagerty··on US Teases 'Major' Science News Amid Fusion Energy Reports
ha
thagerty··on We are all conspiracy theorists
Any time a piece of propaganda uses the term 'your friend' over and over again, ask yourself why are they assuming you have friends, and why they are using this medium to build their base out.
thagerty··on Crypto is the ‘commoditisation of populist anger, gambling and crime’
If people truly understood how the central banks and wall street spend every minute of every day stealing from us, they'd not be so quick to give up on crypto.
thagerty··on How to Navigate Arguments During Holiday Dinner
Don't go.
thagerty··on Why wasn’t FTX’s fraud detectable on the blockchain?
Maybe the answer is as simple as you have to be looking for it. How many naysayers or watchdogs understand it enough to know where to look? All I know is it would be very sad if all of crypto vanishes because of a relatively miniscule number of bandits.
thagerty··on What not to say to someone who has just been laid off
The same thing happens after elections. The 'winners' (some, not all) prance around with fake compassion, using the moment to signal their virtues, and their 'good' choices. If they only knew how ugly it is.
thagerty··on Ask HN: Entrepreneurs, What Drives You?
Autonomy.
thagerty··on Ask HN: Is it time to leave my job?
If you think management is feeding you bs, then I'd say it's time to bail. I watched and waited while several colleagues rotated in and out of the unit I belonged to. I didn't look into it at the time, but after this went on for more than a few months, it caught my attention. The manager was a deadbeat, but was backed up by her boss. Looking back, that situation was never going to get better. Luckily, I got out before I lost my mind.
thagerty··on When and how did you start programming coming from a non-CS major in undergrad?
I was an aerospace engineering washout. After a tough couple of semesters looking for direction, my counselor said there's a computer degree called Computer Applications, but it can only be your second major. Fine. I paired it with Economics, and got down to business writing report programs, which was a helluva lot more fun than trying to figure out the monetary mumbo jumbo that never could mirror reality. My best courses were taught by a businessman who taught us more just by being himself than by being super intelligent. A typical 'high level thinker who didn't want to be bothered by details' manager who maybe was a good programmer, but was probably in a managerial position just because he hung around longer than everyone else. Anyway, a neighbor of the family spotted a bulletin board notice about the need for programmer/analysts. I was hired by a state agency tasked with implementing a wage information collection system for Unemployment Insurance. The state had hired Arthur Anderson for the bulk of the staff, and a couple 'off the street' programmers. Me and a guy who grew up in adjacent farming towns sat at the desktop PS2's, cracking jokes about this job versus shoveling sh*. It was a blast, mainly because I finally realized that goal of feeling like I belonged. Pretty soon, I was pointing out errors in the consultants' code, laughing about my own screw-ups, and forgetting that this was originally a backup plan.
thagerty··on Ask HN: [Over 30s] What makes you more effective than your early 20s self?
The lie is that you aren't as valuable when you start working. The system is just set up that way to take advantage of your naivete.
thagerty··on Ask HN: What were some great ideas that were too early for their time?
Tesla's understanding of electricity. Most would agree he was way ahead of Edison, who used his position to suppress the advancement of Tesla's ideas. Eventually, Tesla was able to demonstrate alternating current on a large scale, but he had so much more to contribute that has not yet seen the light of day.
thagerty··on Counter Steering – The Mark of the Experienced Motorcycle Rider
Correct. And I'll add that it is an intrinsic property of the bicycle.
thagerty··on The Fed plans to sharply boost unemployment
Fat cats need more wage slaves. Period.
thagerty··on 'Too much free time won't make you happier,' says psychologist
Only because most haven't figured out what happiness is. If happiness is being in control of your limited time here, than giving too much of that away in exchange for material belongings amounts to self torture. Find your balance, and do it sooner rather than later. If you put it off, work has a nasty way of taking control.

Some outlets say he fell, but CNN chooses 'jumped.' Do they have evidence, or are they promoting a certain narrative? Decisions he made were sure to cost some people lots of money.
