the_sleaze_··on Moment of Ruby: An Argument for Nothing
default arguments are a great, but I tend to advise that we cap them at 1. Too high arity is a smell.
the_sleaze_··on Moment of Ruby: An Argument for Nothing
Agreed. Ruby is a very sharp tool and its expressiveness can lead to overly clever expressions of creativity.

Better to use `defined?` keyword for nil checking. It does what it says on the box.

the_sleaze_··on Nurses Sound Alarm as 'Uber for Nursing' Apps Push to Deregulate Healthcare
Imagine cheating someone out of supposedly $8,000 and instead putting them into the hole $2,000. Someone who is living paycheck to paycheck.

Yeah I'm the sleaze...

"Sorry, you could've had a large windfall and finally fixed that AC system -- but in my personal opinion, as a tax preparer with over 2 hours of online training -- you didn't keep proper documentation, sorry!

the_sleaze_··on Nurses Sound Alarm as 'Uber for Nursing' Apps Push to Deregulate Healthcare
Low effort response, but correct.

If you think your doctor isn't claudeing it up at their little station you're sorely mistaken.

the_sleaze_··on Nurses Sound Alarm as 'Uber for Nursing' Apps Push to Deregulate Healthcare
The planet pays doctors much less than the USA does. They still have doctors.

The USA doesn't recognize those other doctors (in more ways than 1 apparently) and that is an aspect of the issue.

She's a tax preparer. It is not her job to police their miles, if they say 100k then that's not on her to go put and check the odometer.

Sadly she is just another poor tax. Highly paid tax preparers are happy to fudge numbers. I've seen it personally - every year.

> My tinfoil hat [...] the relationship between energy providers and law makers

My local establishment's energy czar is also on the board of the electric company (itself a natural monopoly of course).

No tinfoil hat required. They have re-elected her several times as well.

2-3x sounds correct, but I'd also account for a more precise heat control being a factor as well.

Even being very experienced with a given range I'm still tempurature surfing for the most part where with induction I can set it to an exact 165F.

It's about the debt the companies took and the cash they need to maintain it. The debt will be written down before they can pay.

These companies are rent-seeking landlords for the providers themselves. Which model they serve has no fundamental bearing on the business, the cost of the rent they can charge does.

USA has age limits for the executive and that isn't considered an issue. We should have age limits at the top end as well. It isn't only technology. I don't think 80+ year olds should be driving a car or even operating a McDonalds much less making sweeping long term decisions across dozens of disciplines with little to no research.

the_sleaze_··on Waymo in Toronto
Self driving is all tactics and no strategy. Waymo would freeze solid when confronted with several hundred motor-scooters and dozens of tuk-tuks.
the_sleaze_··on Seized server Autistici/Inventati (A/I) in Amsterdam for U.S. authorities
Recently dealt with a EU company who readily allows hacking from their systems without regard to the victims whatsoever.

There are bad people everywhere and countries uniting against them is a good thing.

the_sleaze_··on AI coding agents generate more code, but not more software
LLMs generate more code yes.

I generate more beautiful code, yes.

But the longer the codebase survives the more hair and cruft it accumulates. My once beautiful logical paths get carved up by compounding requirements and edge cases.

That's what the AI was trained on. The end result - the hairy ball of wax that noone can look at sideways.

I often think of that whenever AI comes up with what I consider to be an irrational but plausible edge case.

the_sleaze_··on An AI sovereign wealth fund isn't progressive – it's techno-imperialism
Only sort of true.

Consider the OpenAI case of "goblins". The models overfit to a specific type of output. Goblins was a specific case of this type and needed to be corrected.

> We unknowingly gave particularly high rewards for metaphors with creatures. From there, the goblins spread.

the_sleaze_··on Dots: Always-on agents
The market will always trend towards less friction - no matter the friction.

This will take off and all the time we've spent on colorful buttons and 3px margins will be like old 2 lane highways build next to the 12 lane super-freeways.

the_sleaze_··on Dots: Always-on agents
That IS what they're doing.

The surprise is your idea of "relatively cheap" is fungible.

The service WILL be astounding though, I can't deny that.
