the_wheel··on Ask HN: Am I experiencing burn-out or just getting too old
I'm also a senior dev and have suffered from burnout in the past. Building tangible things and learning the skills necessary to do it has helped.

Something like this: https://github.com/IBM/MicroscoPy

What you're describing sounds like it could be more than burnout though. I would also try to find someone to talk to.

the_wheel··on Having Kids
Kids are 1 and 3. The 1 yo doesn't sleep through the night. No family nearby. I really needed this thread.
the_wheel··on The Rise of Workplace Surveillance
How would you know you’re being monitored?
the_wheel··on Launch HN: Peergrade (YC S17) – Student to Student Feedback
This is great, congrats! How did you get your first few customers? How do you plan on monetizing? I realize Peergrade is free, but, as an educator, do you have any advice with respect to selling into K-12 vs higher-ed?
the_wheel··on MS Paint is here to stay
I'd bet this was the plan all along. People are talking about Paint 3D.

eBay?
the_wheel··on Ask HN: How to leave a startup when you own a third of it?
I was in a very similar situation 6 months ago. If you have a typical agreement in place (4 yr vesting schedule w/ an initial 1 yr cliff), about 10% is not only reasonable, it's what you're legally entitled to. If you're legally entitled to 10% and you believe the company is going to increase in value and eventually exit without you, it would be foolish to sell then your stake.

Meteor should be on the list of Node.js frameworks (absent a more appropriate category).
the_wheel··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
Really excited about an Indie Hackers podcast. Started listening to Side Hustle School the other day.
the_wheel··on Vitamin D deficiency in pregnancy is linked to autism traits in the child
It'd be interesting to see if there's a seasonal correlation here - since most of our vitamin D comes from the sun, expectant moms are probably more deficient in the winter. Wonder if third trimester during those months, when there's rapid neurogenesis, leads to an even higher incidence of these traits.
the_wheel··on Launchaco – Instantly generate a responsive, free, website
I noticed you posted Launchaco a few months ago. Why do you think this post succeeded in generating traction while the previous failed? Love the product!
the_wheel··on Show HN: My side project – Laps – Client, Project and Time management
Typos:

"Never lose client! Easily add your client contact info, rates, links and group them by status." Never lose a client!

"Don't miss an update. Create free account!" Create a free account!

"We want to build best tool possible. Create free account!" We want to build the best tool possible. Create a free account!

Also, really love the design.

Works great for me (OS X/Chrome). Very nice job all around.
the_wheel··on Ask HN: Profitable SaaS? How did you grow your business?
"Because of the API TOS, we couldn't really tell anyone how to use it, which made online marketing very difficult." - Can you say more about this? What were you doing that violated the TOS?
the_wheel··on Coursera shuts access to old platform courses
You can't deliver on your mission of democratizing education or operate as a VC backed business (which enables these attempts in the first place), if you're not making moves toward profitability. These companies are pioneering a space and searching for a viable business model in the process. They're surviving.
the_wheel··on Show HN: A job board for quality contract gigs (on-site and remote)
You read it right - another job board.

In previous threads, I've noticed many people suggesting job boards are not the place to look for contract work. Many contract relationships arise out of personal and professional relationships. I generally agree. I have such an arrangement with my previous employer.

That said, I get lots of calls from recruiters, as we all do, and many of them are attempting to act as a middleman for a 6 or 12-month contract. They want to put me on their payroll to service a particular job, and collect the spread.

The idea of a contract economy is really appealing to me, so I wanted to see how the HN community would respond to this prototype.

I was looking for a project to dig a bit deeper with React and this seemed like a decent thing to toil away on. I've been working on it in my spare time for the past couple days. Functionality is really basic and there are surely bugs. Any feedback is welcome!

P.S. If you don't feel the need to comment here, it'd be awesome if you'd select yay or nay at the bottom of the homepage.
