theanalyst··on Is It a Pandemic Yet?
0.5% mortality vs 2-3.5% mortality, look the number of recovered cases is still small, so we can't actually count the in progress numbers just yet
theanalyst··on Meetup.com alternatives
Agree very much. I do attend a few non tech meetups, like movie meetups & hikes for eg. 2€ fee over the movie ticket rarely makes any sense. While proper tech style meetups may actually have organizer costs and such, a meetup where the whole point is meeting a bunch of people over a coffee or so with minimal organizational requirements doesn't make sense with the fee.
theanalyst··on AWS S3 open source alternative written in Go
Also ceph (& swift) are known to scale well in prod. clusters with over 30+ PB of data (at least looking at CERN's cluster) and the latest version of RGW does support geographic redundancy for S3 like apis

theanalyst··on Poll: Which is your primary text editor?
There was a poll yesterday https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5728866, this reflects that.
theanalyst··on Emacs setup for Python development
I'm happy with using elpy for python development in Emacs. The defaults are nice. Also backends like jedi/rope are supported. https://github.com/jorgenschaefer/elpy
theanalyst··on Just Use Sublime Text
Agree; customization and extenisibility of emacs is something unmatched (not a vim user, can't comment on that), I have been using emacs for just an year now; and still I feel I am more productive in emacs than anywhere else, keyboard macros and elisp extensibility can almost bring any feature customized to your fingers.
theanalyst··on Could the eagles have flown Frodo into Mordor? (2000)
Certainly a very interesting analysis, whenever an author uses a deus ex machina, people are bound to come up with explanations, criticisms and the like. Here though it seems like an attempt to you know explain with an inherent internal logic of the Middle Earth.

Agree totally that it is a very great piece of writing.

theanalyst··on Ask HN: What's Your Personal Website Stack?
Same here, Pelican + GH pages, simple to set up and hack upon if you're from the python world
theanalyst··on Is speed reading really possible?
Strangely enough, I find that retention is always better (for me atleast) in casual reading of novels etc; I'm ok there with ~400-500 wpm. I do skim through reports actually, well mostly that happens when you approximately know the content so there just may be higher speeds may be achieved as you know what to expect. I think for me it is mostly prior knowledge that maybe makes a difference of 100-200 wpm
theanalyst··on Is speed reading really possible?
Yes, when you read novels/fiction book etc. Skimming texts seems to make no sense, you read novels to get entertained. Most speed reading books etc. recommend skimming or a quick glance say before actually going to attack, while it makes sense for reports and the like, most of short readings, news and the other thing one comes across may not fit in this category
theanalyst··on Wikipedia over SMS: Getting Wikipedia to the people who need it most
Generally won't sms kind of services are limited to 160 chars. by operators? How are large articles etc. going to be handled
theanalyst··on India blocks 73 URLs criticizing IIPM, an MBA college
Very much so! normally no one would have stumbled across many of those links, now all news articles publish all the urls at one place, and of course everyone is curious what they say
theanalyst··on QEMU 1.4.0 released with 95% of native IO performance
I made an arch-usb image I carry-around after customising the full thing in qemu and converting qemu-img to usb, still use it in emergency places
theanalyst··on So you think you can tell Arial from Helvetica?
Fun game, loved it, though G, lowercase edges can solve most cases. It comes down to kerning in the more difficult ones, Helvetica is a perfect Geometric Sans, and that should help in most cases
theanalyst··on Edison's revenge
Agree on that generally for electical equipments size falls off as square of frequency, the main motivation was the light bulb flickering 50/60 times was close to human persistence of vision which allowed the light bulb to appear constant.
theanalyst··on Adobe is offering many of their CS2 software for free for PC and Mac.
Is the site down for everybody now?
theanalyst··on Urban story telling with Open Data
Certainly tells a (disturbingly) good story, mapping areas with the respective number of incidents might tell the more vulnerable areas from the others
theanalyst··on If you have a file called todo.txt on your computer, you're in the right place
Agree, Org documentation is very good, and easy for newbies to start as well. Certain features like Org-agenda, export into multiple formats and its ease of note-taking are very good features
theanalyst··on Why Words Are So Important
Word learning process almost reaches a plateau after leaving school, interesting to see vocab given more importance than math
theanalyst··on Git on Windows
git bash seems decent, though unless you are working on some *dos thing, if CRLF is set as line endings, it will be a pain (core.autocrlf = false)
theanalyst··on What are some great examples of well-designed personal websites?
Certainly a very engaging design for a personal portfolio
theanalyst··on An Introduction to Static Site Generators
