thebouv··on Launch HN: Flow Club (YC S21) – Virtual co-working space for focused work
Hmm, I guess I don't really get the concept. I still don't know how this stops constant interruption from emails, Zooms, and messaging pings.

If the block on my calendar for this is supposed to help stop people contacting me -- well, it doesn't stop them now.

I'm glad this seems to work for some people though.

thebouv··on Masking Emotions: Face masks impair how we read emotions
Do you just imagine parents at home with their developing children, wearing masks 24 hours a day?

Or that they only learn how to emote and facial expressions from their limited interactions outside their home?

Wear a mask. The kids will be fine.

thebouv··on Incident with GitHub Actions, API Requests, Git Operations, Issues and more
I was on the phone with them getting a demo of Enterprise Managed Users at the time and the demo was failing too, ha. So we looked at the status page together and saw all yellow.

Doesn't matter, I wanted EMUs without the demo anyway. Still was funny to happen when I was talking to an engineer at the time.

thebouv··on Migrating Facebook to MySQL 8.0
Only commenting to say their site makes me mad cause it breaks the browser history. I click the link, go to the fb engineering site, and the back button has no history to go back to HN. Dark Pattern UX -- gross.
thebouv··on Six years of professional Clojure development
If I want to learn a new technology, that's been out a while, I make sure to look for jobs for it first. Just a gut check on how many opportunities are out there for it.

This doesn't work for something brand new of course, but I still do a cursory look through job sites to see what I can see.

Like for instance on Dice.com right now there are 60 jobs available. If I were interested in Clojure today and saw that, I probably wouldn't bother because I know Clojure is mature but there's not a market for it apparently.

Again, this isn't meticulous or scientific at all, just a gut check with a few searches.

Then again, Rust only has 13 jobs listed soooooo.....

thebouv··on Prank Windows XP simulator
Yeah, coincidence, saw the same on my Mac.
thebouv··on Apple Introduces AirTag
If you have an iPhone yes. Will it let the Android users know?
thebouv··on Apple Introduces AirTag
I don't want my device sending or receiving any data using my data plan without my knowing. Do apps I have installed send shit constantly? Sure. But those are MY apps -- that's on me for using them. But if someone else has a tag, and I'm near it, my phone shouldn't be used to send/receive data about said tag at all. I definitely don't like this "we created a network of devices and everyone is opted in" setup.

Similar to the hub-bub raised of Alexa devices "sharing" internet connectivity.

thebouv··on Blog with Markdown and Git, and degrade gracefully through time
Never heard of this but now I'm in love.

Now to figure out what I can write about.

Though I'm definitely going to use this for internal docs at work probably. Very nice.

thebouv··on Poland Justice Minister announces online freedom of speech bill
Really? Define it then.

Facebook is a website by all technical terms.

Where is the hard defined line between social media services and a website?

What is a website that hosts a forum?

What is Discord?

What if I run a WordPress website with the BuddyPress plugin?

What about comments on my blog articles?

thebouv··on Nova by Panic
I feel like buying it to support them because Mac native app companies are few and far between. And Transmit was good when I needed to use it (haven't forever). And Coda was my main editor for a long time.

But I'll still use VS Code cause I work on a Mac and on Linux and it's nice for it to just be the same. And I have no complaints to solve with VS Code. It does exactly what I need for Python and other stuff.

thebouv··on Nova by Panic
I love Panic. Transmit was awesome when I needed a great sftp client gui. But I don't need it anymore.

Coda was baller. But I don't need it anymore.

I think I'll go ahead and buy Nova to check it out and support them. But VS Code does everything I need and I have no complaints about it. Plus I can use the same editor on my Mac and on my Linux desktops.

I find it interesting they're getting into this space, but more power to them.

thebouv··on Docker update ToS: Image retention limits imposed on free accounts
Continuously throw stuff at the wall to see what sticks?
thebouv··on Docker update ToS: Image retention limits imposed on free accounts
Rough idea: maintain an Awesome List of images worth saving, take submissions from public, use that list to automate what to pull?
thebouv··on Microsoft won’t sell police its facial-recognition technology
But they'll sell it to a third party. Who can then sell it to the police. So this just means they won't directly sell it, but they'll still make their money.
thebouv··on Google no longer providing original URL in AMP for image search results
I'd really love to hear the perspective from engineers working on this inside of Google.

How do they perceive the work that they're doing?

Do they see the harm it causes, or do they only believe in the promise of the good it gives?

thebouv··on Trump threatens to 'close' down social media platforms
You're expecting a lot out of a country still trying to get Creationism taught in schools as an alternative scientific theory.
thebouv··on Trump threatens to 'close' down social media platforms
> essentially create a public(1) forum where I am not able to exercise my first amendment rights(2) (and, legally speaking, rightfully so(3)). I cannot help but to find this very concerning.

(1) Private forum, displayed in the public. (2) Those rights protect your speech from being suppressed BY THE GOVERNMENT. (3) Correct if you meant legally as a private company running a private forum, they can manage the content as they see fit, including fact checking the POTUS. Or incorrect if you meant you have a legal right to exercise your speech on their platform free of their rules.

thebouv··on Trump threatens to 'close' down social media platforms
The comments defending the fact checking?

Or the comments defending it is okay for big government to step in and threaten to close a private company over fact checking?

thebouv··on Trump threatens to 'close' down social media platforms
The corrupt part out loud is a distraction from the hidden corruption.
thebouv··on Trump threatens to 'close' down social media platforms
It was a bigly word choice.
thebouv··on Trump threatens to 'close' down social media platforms
They will never understand your point.
thebouv··on Trump threatens to 'close' down social media platforms
So he just admitted that fact checking is suppressing conservative voices?

That's awesome.

thebouv··on Siri, What Time Is It in London?
Siri is terrible.

"Call mom" sometimes calls my mom, who is in my favorites (I have 4 people in favorites: mom, wife, daughter, brother).

Sometimes it decides to call "wife's mom"

Sometimes it says "which mom" then lists "mom, wife's mom"

Mom, literally the word mom, is in my favorites. I use it almost daily.

And yet, Siri doesn't remember this, doesn't create relevancy, it doesn't even decide "Let's look at Favorites first".

:/

thebouv··on Reddit's top user leaves platform after harassment
So, I don't get it.

Why does it matter if a few volunteer mods manage a ton of subs?

Isn't it hard to do? So they have a hard job? And it's volunteer?

And .. what? I don't understand the outrage directed at mods I guess.

Note: I'm a light Reddit user. I follow a handful of subs. And I can't name a single mod of any of them. Maybe this is more meaningful for people who spend more time on the site and are more involved in their particular subs? What, they just bash heads with mods sometimes?

thebouv··on New.css – A classless CSS framework to write modern websites using only HTML
1) I went searching for you and was quite impressed with how many apps and such that Dracula supports: https://github.com/dracula .. wow

2) I hope one of those helps you. I didn't see one specific to being classless or a framework for a website. But I did see a github-pages one that might be the closest?

thebouv··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on now?
Looking for something to do myself, actually.

I recently built https://www.warcache.com to save paint recipes and army lists for wargaming, or print out sheets of proxy cards for Underworlds.

It was fun to build, but kinda stuck thinking of what to add.

If anyone out there has a Python/Flask project they need help on, let me know. Stuck in the house, might as well help some projects.

thebouv··on Self-isolation is feeding my Warhammer addiction
My whole group was in on Infinity for a long time.

But eventually the intricacies of Infinity rules gets to you. It is a dense DENSE ruleset that requires constant referral to the rulebook.

It is fun. It is a great setting. But I know it wears on some people due to its complexity.

After a week of work where I'm heavy on the brain-stuff, I've decided I want my games dumber than Infinity.

thebouv··on Keybase cancels Stellar token airdrop
That's a bummer. I liquidated the stellar they sent me. Free money. I bought some plastic Orks to paint, ha.
thebouv··on Red Hat Introduces Open Source Project Quay Container Registry
The docs right now refer to using `docker` as well, but `docker` isn't officially supported in RHEL 8+.

So guessing the docs will slowly shift to RHEL8 and podman.
