thedevelopment··on Vagrant 1.6 has been released
I believe Vagrant is for quickly and repeatably building development environments - I don't think it's meant for production.

Look into packer for building out Production images, and Chef/Puppet/Ansible for additional configuration ontop those images.

thedevelopment··on What's New in Ruby 2.1 [pdf]
I believe the debugger is broken in Ruby-2.0, and you should use byebug instead.

There are pry wrappers for byebug - https://github.com/deivid-rodriguez/pry-byebug - maybe that'll work?

thedevelopment··on JS-Git reaches fundraising goal with $25,000 pledge from Mozilla
Wow, that's an impressive donation from Mozilla. What's the background story? Why would they be so heavily invested?

I understand Tim has done great things for the Node community. Are Mozilla heavily invested with Node, or is this for the Firefox OS?

thedevelopment··on Learn Knockout.js in 30 minutes
This is a top notch effort. As someone who has recently started looking at JS MVC frameworks, I've found there are a lot of options and not a huge amount of documentation or tutorials.

When it comes to differentiating between frameworks, tutorials like this go a long way, and help the entire JS community. I look forward to other JS frameworks coming out with similar, and getting more opinionated about conventions.

thedevelopment··on Show HN: Badger.com, a new domain registrar, needs beta testers (1 free domain)
How have you written this? It's fast and has an interesting feel to it, but I don't recognize the JavaScript framework.

Also, how can I leave feedback from within the site?

thedevelopment··on Implementing bookmarklets in JavaScript
Bookmarklets are awesome except they involve more user interaction than should be needed. I feel like almost every time I could use a bookmarklet, a plugin would do more with just as much user initiative.

They also don't have a favicon (or I haven't seen one in FF4) without a user pre-visiting a destination page, so they look unpolished.

thedevelopment··on Show HN: My weekend project, A domain name hack and semi-mass domain search
It's using Ruby Whois (http://www.ruby-whois.org/) to do the queries, and it looks like the .org implementation is a bit flakey.

Thanks for the heads up and thanks for the feedback! I'll see if I can fix the issue.

thedevelopment··on Show HN: My weekend project, A domain name hack and semi-mass domain search
That's pretty cool, but slightly different. It's certainly a much more polished product =)

Where that's showing you a combination of words, my site instead looks up every word and checks it's availability.

I created my site to help with the brainstorming of site names to see what's available, but I can see how domai.nr would be used in a very similar way.

thedevelopment··on Show HN: My weekend project, A domain name hack and semi-mass domain search
Hey HN,

I was always sick of trying to find available domain names for other side projects, so I came up with this. It'll check availability of .com, .net and .org, as well as any domain name hacks available (gimpish -> gimpi.sh). It's Sinatra and EventMachine driven.

Enter a few words in the name field to try it out! e.g. apple, microsoft, ycombinator, purplemonkeydishwasher

Feedback muchly appreciated!

thedevelopment··on How I reduced Page Load Time by 75% - WordPress Optimization
What an excellent post, and easy enough for someone without tech experience to follow. This will definitely be forwarded to friends wanting to get into the more serious side of web publishing.
thedevelopment··on The risks of "$15 for $2097 worth of mobile internet"
This just strikes me as so very open to malicious attack. That I can scan networks to find smart phones on Virgin (or other networks), and do no more than a ping flood those IPs to incur thousands of dollars in excess charges to a unwitting person.

It takes the term Denial Of Service attack to an entirely new level of bad.

thedevelopment··on The risks of "$15 for $2097 worth of mobile internet"
Imagine if this was combined with the iPhone worm from a few months back. It'd essenially pingflood all phones exposed on the telco networks and screw thousands of people in excess changes without them even knowing something was going on.

This worries me greatly. (puts iPhone on WiFi mode)

thedevelopment··on Ask HN: How do you wake up?
First alarm: iPod plugged into a stereo playing something pleasant. (7.20am)

Second alarm: iPhone alarm 40 minutes later. I now mega-loathe the "Harp" alarm tone. (8.00am)

Third alarm: Girlfriend kicking me out of bed between 5-10 minutes later. (~8.10am)

Works like a charm every time.

thedevelopment··on Can you recommend some good RoR books?
The Rails Way is pretty good.

I've found the peepcode webcasts worth their weight in gold, but that's not a book =)

And I found Design Patterns in Ruby pretty good for Ruby beginners
