themewon BBS: The Documentary (2005)

The day I was able to upgrade my 'shoebox' 110 baud modem to a 300 baud modem was the day I thought "I'll never need this kind of speed, but it's nice to have."

Thanks for posting about this documentary. I ran a BBS from 1983-1986 on a Commodore 64, a 1200 baud modem and 5 1541 floppy drives. An amazing time for this technology.

themewon Ask HN: What sites do you visit daily?

https://news.ycombinator.com/

themewon Mullvad audit found no information leakage or logging of customer data

Too bad their DOH servers aren't anycast anymore and route your traffic through Singapore. They did have a nice adblock/non-adblock DOH and DOT service.

I had always hoped the future of video looked like this...

themewon CentOS Linux is dead–and Red Hat says Stream is “not a replacement”

Unfortunately, Stream is not a rolling release like Arch. You will still be required to perform a full install of Stream 9 when it's released.

themewon Mozilla VPN

themewon IPv4, IPv6, and a sudden change in attitude

As long as Reddit is ip4 only, ip4 won't go anywhere...

themewon Why I no longer host my emails myself

If you can setup your SPF, DKIM and DMARC settings, you'll never have to worry about paying for email services. You can keep your email flowing to customers and maintain your security. Unfortunately, very few sysadmins these days seem to want to spend any time learning the ins-and-outs of successful email delivery.

themewon Improving Firefox Startup Time with the About:Home Startup Cache

Seems to already be available in FF 78.

Search for: browser.startup.homepage.abouthome_cache.enabled and turn it on to test.

themewon DuckDuckGo Billboards

We've got them in our small town along the panhandle of Florida. Amazing to see them advertising in major intersections around town.

themewon Tempinbox.xyz – Fast Email Service

"Looks like you're using an Ad Blocker" won't get you many friends or users from YC :)

themewon Mailper: Disposable Mailboxes

Can't see the mailbox name I'm creating in Firefox. Field stays black but does accept the field.

themewon Vim – Should You Still Use Vim?

Nano all the way... Always liked Nano better than Vim, but nice to have a choice.

themewon Canadians name top appliance brands that break down

In the graphic near the bottom of the article.

themewon Public-Pihole

Thanks for posting. If they added DNS over HTTPS or DNS over TLS I'd use give them a try.

themewon Byte Magazine: Future Computers (1981)

Thanks so much for posting this link. The ads in the back pages bring me back to the early 80's and remind me where we came from (acoustic modems, 16K ram) to today. Geez, I feel so old...

themewon Removing Old Versions of TLS

So if we remove TLS 1.1 from our servers and just offer 1.2, we fail on fallback when testing through Qualys.

themewon Firefox Monitor

Thanks for the site notification, but you shouldn't use the site without https.

Use: https://monitor.firefox.com/

themewon Ask HN: Email on Linux?

Slow? T-Bird is the best non-web based email there is. I'd rather my email on my server than sitting on a Google server somewhere...

themewon How much caffeine do you drink each day?

I buy four bags at a time from BrewSouth which last me about 2 weeks per bag, so 6 mugs per pot per day. Guess I am addicted.
