themonk··on Jepsen: Aerospike 3.99.0.3
Community edition is not a production ready product.

Use Aerospike only if you are ready to buy enterprise edition. Jepsen test results are applicable to enterprise edition only.

themonk··on Why is clockwise Clockwise? (2008)
I did not even read it, one picture was good enough
themonk··on India Orders 32 Websites Blocked, Including GitHub, Archive.Org, Pastebin
Those who use Github knows how to bypass the ban.
themonk··on Saving a Project and a Company
This sounds familiar. Few day ago i over overheard this, "Our user authentication system is on MySQL, it may not scale, let's move it to NoSQL."

Only time this table is touched to check user entered correct password or not.

Agree, there might not be ops team as well, it is dev ops culture. No one in team was brave enough to take the risk. I am sure there are no units test as well to ensure nothing breaks.

Was innodb buffer pool as set to default as well?
themonk··on Saving a Project and a Company
I have seen both extreme: no index v/s all column indexed, no cache at all v/s cache at every level.

I have seen caches having more inserts v/s reads.

I have seen them replacing MySQL by NoSQL as it does not scale for them.

This is common for early stage funded startups founded by non tech founders.

themonk··on Saving a Project and a Company
I saved many projects likes this, it is work that always hunts me, because of ex-coworkers and reputation.
themonk··on Saving a Project and a Company
Ok, what does it takes to enable op code cache? It is not only about software, it is about many no brainers.
themonk··on Ask HN: Companies using MongoDB, suggestions to deploy at scale?
And after that pay big support fees to Oracle.
themonk··on Stripe SQLite data exports beta

themonk··on Proxygen, Facebook's C++ HTTP Framework
Can you tell us motivation to build this instead of contorting to and using existing solutions such as Apache Traffic Server, squid, nginx or haproxy?
themonk··on Ask HN: How was your experience using parse.com?
If object goes to MySQL, hire me to scale.
themonk··on Macworld lays off most staff
This might be a good case study for dying traditional form of online media. Credit goes to random dance of Google SERP. As per Alexa, search traffic (for macworld.com) is gone down from 50% to 30% of total traffic, in three months. Google decided to do a (un)fair distribution of traffic.

Niche content companies should remain lean to survive.

themonk··on Ask HN: Why is that 10+ years experience folks struggle to find work
They become expert in problem solving.
themonk··on Ask HN: Shall I run my own adserver?

themonk··on Ask HN: Shall I run my own adserver?
Would like to learn about company that can pay better than adsense on regular basis. I am reading this first time.

Edit: I would suggest you to give one more try to adsense, it might perform better this time.

themonk··on The Short Answers To Every Matt Cutts Video
I was expecting one line answer to all questions: "well, it depends, but you think about user, not Google"
themonk··on Ask HN: A/B Testing JavaScript framework with scalable server component
Optimizely is good service, but I am looking for something cheap that I can install on my server(s) or that can work with Google Analytics. I am looking for feasible solution that can work for millions of user.

Million users are not even part of Optimizely's standard package (I assumed it is going to be expensive).

I wish I can use Optimizely client side APIs with free Google Analytics :)

themonk··on AWS instance was scheduled for retirement
Thanks, got an update from AWS, it was not scheduled retirement, it was some other issue.
themonk··on AWS instance was scheduled for retirement
Can you tell me subject line of email.

I searched my mails for couple of words including instance ID, result is negative. No email in spam folder in last one month.

themonk··on AWS instance was scheduled for retirement
No I did not got any notification.

It was EBS backed instance, since I had snapshot, it does not took much time to recreate a new instance. Beside that I had another instance behind ELB to avoid downtime.

If is fair to expect some notification for scheduled retirement.
