thenipper··on Why I Am a Programmer
I had a pirated copy of Below The Root as a kid on my Apple IIc... except the small town copy network had made a bad copy. So it'd only play some of the time if i was lucky. I'm going to dive into this
thenipper··on Build your own decision model
Ha. I did something similar but made a Jeopardy judge for my family to play jeo-paw-dy hosted by the family dog. It uses our phones as buzzers and speech to text to let people just speak the answer
thenipper··on Claude Status – Elevated errors for multiple models
us-east-1 was blowing up a bit tonight with ec-2. Maybe it's related.
thenipper··on Qwen Image 2.1
The uncanny valley cheers is really freaking me out.
thenipper··on Show HN: Trace – Offline Mac meeting transcripts you can flag mid-call
Also agreed, my work prohibits App Store apps so i have to skip things like this.
thenipper··on Remind HN: Today is Mother's Day, call your moms
Same here. I’m sorry for your loss and may her memory be a blessing.

If you need someone to talk to I’m here.

thenipper··on The Classic American Diner
Oh nice. I remember miss bellows falls from growing up!
thenipper··on English professors double down on requiring printed copies of readings
How do you handle kids w/ a learning disability who can't effectively write well?
thenipper··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2025)
An open source campaign management app for TTRPGs. There are a ton out there, that are basically just fancy wikis. I'm working on one in Django for running my old school D&D game i'm starting back up this fall.
thenipper··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (April 2025)
In my last week of funemployment before going back to work. I’m working on fun stuff like gardening, designing battle tech terrain in cad and building a web tool for solo roleplaying.

Nice to do something just for myself

The amount of Boston in this comment is amazing. And 100% true
thenipper··on Shallow Feedback Hollows You Out
Jordan Peterson too. Putting Chomsky in the same sentence as those two is just insulting
thenipper··on Ghostty 1.0
This is great. I’m middle aged and I’ve definitely noticed my eyesight needs more and more help in the contrast dept
thenipper··on Handwriting but not typewriting leads to widespread connectivity in brain
Interesting! Explains that even though I've used a laptop since 1992 to do school work because of my learning disabilities(Dysgraphia, mid-line problems, poor fine motor control) I still prefer to hand write my notes. Even if I never read them I noticed that just the act of doing them helps me remember things. I might not remember the source but I can remember the act of note taking. I've noticed the same thing with reading as well.
thenipper··on Bird flu in Canada may have mutated to become more transmissible to humans
I remember going in for a physical Jan 2020 and my doctor talking about lot about the flu. He gave me the pneumonia vaccine and then was like oh there is this other thing but probably nothing to worry about…
thenipper··on The C23 edition of Modern C
How many pluses until you should just say you have D experience?
thenipper··on Ask HN: Best AI Code Assistant?
I really like Sourecgraphs Cody. It’s got diffing like Cursor. You can choose models, chat etc. plus it’s only 8 bucks a month
thenipper··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
Yeah I'm liking how 'simple' it is if you don't want to get super involved. Plus I've got a small woodshop so I can build myself some tools to help the process.
thenipper··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
Bookbinding class. Its really fun to make things with my hands!
thenipper··on Show HN: Will I run Boston 2025?
I used to live on beacon st in Brookline. Every year the marathon was a nightmare. Drunk people on my stoop. Trash everywhere. It was wicked cool to see the old timers and charity runners running even after it got dark. Would always give them a big cheer as they came by.
thenipper··on Claude for Enterprise
I’d love to be able to use the GitHub integration with a personal account. Currently I use claudesync that works pretty well but I’m figuring it’ll stop working at some point
thenipper··on Uv 0.3 – Unified Python packaging
Aren't they the same team?
thenipper··on AI chip startup Groq lands $640M to challenge Nvidia
I'd guess that this means they'll get access to Groq's chips.
thenipper··on Mastering Ruby Code Navigation: Ruby LSP Enhancements in the First Half of 2024
Mypy/pyright aren’t interpreters. They’re basically just linters that you run against Python code to see any typing issues. I don’t mean that dismissively, they’re great tools.
thenipper··on Show HN: I made a game for learning the country flags of the world
This is great. My 11 year old thanks you!
thenipper··on EV Motors Without Rare Earth Permanent Magnets
I like the dark beer from Athletic. The 'All Out'. It's pretty tasty. N/A Guinness on the other hand is disgusting.
thenipper··on EV Motors Without Rare Earth Permanent Magnets
Anecdotally I'd say it actually has. Myself and a bunch of friends have moved to non-alcoholic craft beers.
thenipper··on Mortgages Stuck Around 7% Force Rapid Rethink of American Dream
I’ve known folks in NH this has happened too. One of the only real taxes NH has is a property tax so it keeps going up. Folks who’ve owned their place forever suddenly can’t afford it. Most of them are old so they’re on fixed incomes or they’re woodchucks who do odd jobs/labor to get by.

Just for comparison: I live just outside of Boston. My property taxes for my house are roughly the same as my parents in NH. Even though my house is worth 5x as much.

thenipper··on Show HN: Kubernates in Node.js
This bites me all the time. It really shouldn't, as I'm always like: "man i'm an idiot". But inevitably I make this mistake and lose time over it.
thenipper··on Pydantic Logfire
Agreed. I use pydantic daily and I'm in the position to try this out... but why? It really seems to be a weird divergence from their core product.
