theoctopus··on macOS Catalina
I'd assume the reason it's not advertised on the Mac App Store is because OS updates are now done through System Preferences.
theoctopus··on Cloudflare Network Performance Issues
They are, but that subdomain is proxied through Cloudflare. If they'd set it to just DNS then it would have still worked.
theoctopus··on Valve has mutated from a game developer into a financial middleman
There was a security fix update in April: https://steamcommunity.com/games/70/announcements/detail/375...
theoctopus··on How Discord Went Mainstream
Agreed, this is exactly how 2FA should work. Allowing support staff to deactivate 2FA is a massive security weakness.
theoctopus··on OpenStreetMap Foundation investigation into unusual membership signups [pdf]
These are not normal account signups, they are signups to become an associate member (https://join.osmfoundation.org/) which can vote in foundation elections.
theoctopus··on Spectre.css – A Lightweight, Responsive and Modern CSS Framework
The intention is that for repeated styles, components are extracted: https://tailwindcss.com/docs/extracting-components
theoctopus··on Ask HN: How should I create my personal academic blog?
I wanted to like Hugo (especially with its ridiculous speed compared to Jekyll), but I found that any time I wanted to do something slightly unusual I had to spend far too long finding what template file name I was supposed to use, mostly by trial and error. With Jekyll I just specify the template name in the front matter.
theoctopus··on JPEG image of Shakespeare which is also a zip file containing his complete works
I've been unable to extract the inner rars with 7-zip. Each shakespeare.html just gives a "Data error"
theoctopus··on FBI Mysteriously Closes New Mexico Observatory
Some observatories (including this one it seems) use liquid mercury as mirrors:

theoctopus··on iPhone XS – A12 Bionic
For a device which is heavily used every single day, yes.
theoctopus··on Dear customers of Cloudflare: an appeal regarding Tor
A zero-configuration free CDN is a pretty good reason in my opinion.
theoctopus··on Oracle to charge for Java from Jan 2019
This is some _incredible_ clickbait. The latest JRE and JDK will continue to be free. What Oracle are charging for is continued Java 8 support.
theoctopus··on AWS icon quiz
A lot of those names are actually pretty sensible, but who thought "Amazon Unlimited FTP Server" was a good alternative to S3?
theoctopus··on GitHub will now tell you if your password has been pwned
And he doesn't ridicule people who don't use HTTPS, he ridicules people who spread BS about how it's not necessary.
theoctopus··on Internet Archive, decentralized
This is one of the (admittedly few) cases where javascript is actually required.
theoctopus··on Show HN: Qeys.io – Web app license validation
I think the primary purpose is the notifications, not the blocking. Even if they browse to the page once, see the block and disable it, you'll still know.
theoctopus··on Show HN: Qeys.io – Web app license validation
If you're looking for a replacement font for your tagline on the homepage, Montserrat isn't too different at the heavier weights. Nice to see Laravel Spark in the wild though.
theoctopus··on Show HN: Qeys.io – Web app license validation
It's Google's special brand font so I doubt they license it. However it is served from the same domain as Google Fonts so it's an easy mistake to make.
theoctopus··on Show HN: Qeys.io – Web app license validation
This definitely seems like an interesting product, but if you're an anti-piracy company then maybe you shouldn't be using a pirated font. If you check the Product Sans CSS file you're including, you'll see there's a notice that the font is not open source.
theoctopus··on GDPR Resource Library
It's the data protection authority of the country that represents the customer, such as the ICO for the UK.
theoctopus··on Free SSL on Github Pages with a custom domain: Part 2 – Let's Encrypt
It does work, I have a LE cert running behind cloudflare for Full SSL.
theoctopus··on Tell HN: Sci-Hub's TLS certificate has started failing
crt.sh reports it was revoked on the 26th: https://crt.sh/?id=274083328
theoctopus··on A journalism student who found out she won a Pulitzer in class
I agree that it's something to be discussed, but OP was quite disparaging with his comparison to somebody cleaning a chalkboard. Providing the interns participate in the investigation, as they did in this case, they should be included in any award given to the team that wrote the piece.
theoctopus··on A journalism student who found out she won a Pulitzer in class
Had you actually read the article, you would have seen that:

> From there, she took it upon herself to create a database for Enquirer reporters, documenting the time, location, and nature of every opioid-related arrest that occured over those days.

The article also says that because of that database they were able to fill gaps in the article and make it as compelling as it was.

theoctopus··on Smugmug Acquires Flickr
Smugmug's been around since 2002 so it can't be too much of a problem
theoctopus··on Google loses ‘right to be forgotten’ case
Not a particularly good example considering the names are still on both the German and English language articles.
theoctopus··on Why Can't Hollywood Make a Good Video Game Movie?
A Bioshock movie would be very hard to get right because so much of the plot revolves around free will and choice, which is of course entirely missing in film. However there was a book [1] set in the Bioshock universe which could work.

theoctopus··on Ivy – A static website generator built in Python
The main advantage of a static site generator is it allows you to just write the contents of each page and the generator will insert that into a page template. It means that, for example, a site-wide navbar only needs to be written once rather than added to every page manually.
theoctopus··on Reserved-usernames: Usernames to prevent url collision with resource paths
Oddly

  reddit.com/u/foo
does work, but it just redirects to

  reddit.com/user/foo
theoctopus··on Show HN: One hostname to rule them all
They seem to work in similar ways, but Cloudflare focuses on speed and security, this just seems to focus on SEO. The security risk is in theory the same, but I'd argue that the risk from Cloudflare is lower as they're a well established service used by major companies.
