thesis··on Feeling Sad about AI
If you haven’t already… show him how to use codex or claude or whatever. And let him start having fun and making games.
thesis··on WSL 2 is getting faster Windows file system access
Moved to mac about 7 years ago because of horrible WSL file system speed was.
thesis··on I'm Tired of Talking to AI
I don’t think all ai generated responses are bad though. They need to be brief. People need to iterate on the content and understand their response.

Oneshotting a response just because ChatGPT said so is super annoying.

I will a lot of times write and email and give it to an LLM to soften it or round it out since I have a bad habit of being overly direct.

thesis··on AI overly affirms users asking for personal advice
Humans do this too though. I have close friends that ask for advice. Sometimes if I know there’s risk in touchy subjects I will preface with “do you want my actual advice, or just looking for a sounding board”

I’ve seen firsthand people have lost friends over honesty and telling them something they don’t want to hear.

It’s sad really. I don’t want friends that just smile to my face and are “yes-men” either.

thesis··on Beyond has dropped “meat” from its name and expanded its high-protein drink line
FYI most beyond burgers have more in sodium not less and beyond uses coconut oil which is still fairly high in saturated fat.

If those 2 things are your barometer for healthy… it’s not a clear win.

thesis··on Breaking down a record-setting day on the Texas grid
Texas has these free electricity nights. Anyone know of a battery system that can fill the batteries at night (from the grid) and use them during the day? And then recharge at night again. Due to location solar isn’t an option but still interested in batteries due to free nights.
thesis··on Artificial intelligence gives weather forecasters a new edge
Ah yes. The old 0% chance of rain today when it’s currently raining.
thesis··on Julian Assange has reached a plea deal with the U.S., allowing him to go free
It's a weird vibe going on in this post. A lot of people are cheering the withdrawal from Afghanistan. I wonder how many know that the Taliban has all biometric/financial data that the US left behind enabling them to round up anyone who ever helped the US.
thesis··on Battery-swap networks are preventing emergency blackouts
Sell it back at night when there's already a surplus of electricity? This is exactly why they want EV's charging at night, because there's less demand.
thesis··on Engineering household robots to have a little common sense
I like my Roborock. YMMV though.
thesis··on FTC proposes new protections to combat AI impersonation of individuals
Isn't fraud already illegal?
thesis··on Verizon, AT&T customers sue to undo T-Mobile merger
The really cool part about this is The Campaign Registry who manages 10dlc registrations... is now owned by Tata Communications. A company based in India.
thesis··on Some Pixel owners still can't dial 911 during an emergency
A crime? Not sure I agree in a isolated incident.

But I feel like it should be a crime to ignore a known issue like this.

thesis··on Hackers can use credit bureaus to dox nearly anyone in America
I really don’t remember. But I kept getting people creating different accounts that I wouldnt know about until it went to collections and dinged my credit. Took me a couple years to finally get it locked down. After 5ish police reports and ftc identity theft reports that all these energy/cell phone companies require for you to dispute.

It’s maddening that these companies give out service with wrong variations of my name and no ID but then want me to jump through hours of hoops to get it removed from collections.

Luckily I got it all resolved prior to rates shooting up so I was able to refi at all time low rates or this would have cost me a lot of money.

thesis··on Hackers can use credit bureaus to dox nearly anyone in America
Many people don’t know this but you also need to set up a freeze at https://nctue.com/consumers/

I had to deal fraudsters getting cell phones and also electricity to their apartment.

Setting a freeze up here solved it.

thesis··on Could we stop Yellowstone from erupting with a giant geothermal power plant?
Anytime soon is one thing, but "If at all"? It's been happening for millions of years, and it sure seems like there still "activity" there.

Not sure what kind of scientist could say they don't expect it to ever erupt again?

thesis··on FCC orders phone companies to block scam text messages
Great until the hospital or police or your kids friends parents are trying to contact you.
thesis··on FCC orders phone companies to block scam text messages
You're not wrong. It's horrible. Want to hear something even more funny?

Twilio is forcing Tollfree Number registation and their current timeline is 6 weeks to approve. Well a week or 2 ago they decided that they wanted more data than what was currently submitted. So everyone is currently being denied and having to resubmit their registrations.

10DLC / Local numbers is madness in and of itself too. Forcing businesses to pay quarterly fees so these poor ol' carriers can have more recurring rev.

thesis··on Elon Musk Owns Twitter; CEO and CFO have left
https://twitter.com/khamenei_ir/status/22815824658
thesis··on Removing SMS support from Signal Android (soon)
Just a guess, but this likely has something to do with 10DLC and/or Toll Free Verification and all of the complexities that are being pushed by the carriers for users to register their numbers and even pay to use if you want to use 10DLC.
thesis··on Science is political, and that's a bad thing
This is an interesting take. A fairly elitist take at that. You do realize that generally the people who live in the non-“better sections” (as you put it) of large cities generally vote in line with how the super highly educated elite people that live in Silicon Valley vote.
thesis··on Wealthy Americans moving to Florida at 4 times the rate of other states
Because you're sick of their politics they shouldn't get federal help? Geez. That seems pretty extreme.

Forest fires in California, freezes in Texas, hurricanes in Florida, even hurricanes (Sandy) in the North East. Natural disasters happen in both (typically) democrat and republican states.

Are you sick and tired of the government allowing us to eat fast food, smoke cigarettes, and drink alcohol too? After all a large percentage of your tax dollars are going towards medicare and health.

thesis··on Wealthy Americans moving to Florida at 4 times the rate of other states
Which part of the US do you live in that doesn't have natural disasters?
thesis··on FBI Searches Trump’s Home in Florida
Editing to not be so snarky.

I can’t wrap my head around the coup thing. Trump said peacefully go to the capitol. So a bunch of people some which were let into the capitol (there’s a recent Jan 6 defendant let go due to the judge agreeing with this defense) went in. How could this lead to a coup or taking over the government?

Is our country so fragile that occupying 1 building brings the whole system down?

thesis··on U.S. employers added 528k jobs in July
So you’re advocating that negative gdp growth is the same as positive gdp growth?

It’s seems quite advantageous to suddenly change the definition when it slaps you in the face.

thesis··on Ask HN: How can scam callers fake a mobile phone number?
This is great and all until there’s an emergency and someone is trying to reach you.
thesis··on Moderna’s HIV vaccine has officially begun human trials
Not sure why you’re being downvoted all much… well actually no it’s pretty obvious.

I think you’re right though. The current Covid-19 vaccines are proven to lose efficacy over time. Will the same thing happen with this one as well? It’s a good question.

thesis··on Report to Congress: Robocalls and Transmission of Misleading Caller ID
No, I don't feel the same way about Junk email. I can go through it at my leisure and there's history there. Carriers potentially blocking calls is just some black box deciding what's "safe" for me.

There are issues with mail servers being blacklisted and they can't send emails to me. But there's actual visibility to that. You can look up mail server IP's and get to the root issue of why you're blacklisted.

Honestly I'd rather the government focus on the endless junk mail I receive to my home than anything. I spend more time sorting that rather than hitting decline on my phone.

thesis··on Report to Congress: Robocalls and Transmission of Misleading Caller ID
Illegal (fraud) robocalls need to stop.

With that being said, I'm tired of the carriers / phone creators deciding when I want to answer my phone.

An example of what I'm talking about: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251165362

My bank was trying to get a hold of me due to them turning off autopay, and I wasn't answering their calls because it doesn't show a phone number or anything. Just "Spam Likely"

IMO I'd rather see all calls coming to my phone, and send them to VM if I want. Devices nowadays even have the capability to block calls from outside your contact list if you want.

These decisions should be up to me! Not some blackhole where algorithms decide if I should receive the call or not.

thesis··on How death rates from Covid-19 differ between vaccinated and unvaccinated
You’re wrong here.

It’s not about recently infected. It’s about deaths per day of unvaccinated. If the amount of death among the unvaccinated is going down daily then it is. It has nothing to do with recently infected because at some point some of those people may die next week or the week after and it will be reported then.
