thinkcontext··on US Government is hiding a secret court ruling about how it spies on Americans
> We have spent over 100 years going back and forth on party politics. It has done nothing to move the bar on justice.

You think there have been no advancements in "justice" since 1926? Either you are being hyperbolic, have no knowledge of history or you have a very idiosyncratic definition of justice.

thinkcontext··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
AI adoption is a huge shift from labor to capital. Its history repeating, now instead of muscle power being replaced its brain power.

The amount of capex flying around requires raising funds, there have been dozens of stories recently about investors demanding higher rates for AI bonds. MSFT et al need to get their balance sheets in order to get good rates. Also, everyone is waiting for the bubble to burst, getting the house in order ahead of it is very prudent.

thinkcontext··on Will Fiber-Optic Cables Get Made in Orbit? Maybe
Seems like a disappointing result, or at least an indication that a lot more work is needed. A 2x improvement in one type and no improvement on another certainly doesn't justify the costs of space manufacturing.
thinkcontext··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
Iran has also supplied ballistic missiles to Russia. Ukraine attacked a Caspian ship of Iran's that was allegedly carrying arms over the summer.

Assistance has been mutual, though lately the flow has been more from Russia to Iran. Drone improvements, targeting intelligence and missile tactics to avoid Patriot interception.

thinkcontext··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
> It's just normal way of life for them.

Sanitation service is expensive. It's an under valued historical victory in rich countries.

thinkcontext··on Ukraine claims first drone evacuation of wounded soldier
You moved the goalposts. You originally said S300/400 could down any US stealth plane. Now you are saying that S300/400 can down any US stealth plane in concert with many other capabilities.
thinkcontext··on Ukraine claims first drone evacuation of wounded soldier
> Russia's S300/S400 can absolutely down everything the USA has including F22 and F35 - stealth is an 'advantage' not 'cloaking device'.

Iran has (had?) S300 and maybe S400 yet downed no F35s despite many months of them in their airspace. I'm not suggesting US stealth makes the planes invulnerable but the evidence we have so far does not support your statement.

thinkcontext··on Solar surpasses nuclear power globally for first time
That has nothing to do with millimeter wave boring.
thinkcontext··on Solar surpasses nuclear power globally for first time
The first TW of solar capacity took 60 years to reach. The 2nd TW took 2 years. We've reached the inflection point.
thinkcontext··on Solar surpasses nuclear power globally for first time
That's many years from even attempting to make power. They've done what, a couple inches wide hole to 100 feet?
thinkcontext··on Solar surpasses nuclear power globally for first time
At least in the case of wind the federal government has attacked via the permitting process. That limits what states can do, cutting taxes doesn't help if you can't build at all.
thinkcontext··on Solar surpasses nuclear power globally for first time
And the replacements will cost less and produce more power than the originals.
thinkcontext··on Solar surpasses nuclear power globally for first time
China has 38 reactors under construction and are leaders in advanced designs.
thinkcontext··on Yandex Takes a Second Data Center Hit in 48 Hours
You said

> An attack on American soil could be met with a literally nuclear response against Iran or whoever perpetrated it.

Al Qaeda is in the "whoever" category that you claimed would be met with a nuclear response.

thinkcontext··on Yandex Takes a Second Data Center Hit in 48 Hours
Given how quickly this technology is proliferating I think that could change. Numerous non-state groups are using drones offensively in Africa and Colombia. If a drone hit something like a refinery and there was significant impact, don't you think the status quo could change quickly?
thinkcontext··on Yandex Takes a Second Data Center Hit in 48 Hours
Insurgents in several countries in Africa are using them. Narcos in Colombia are using them. Its inevitable that they will be used here.
thinkcontext··on Yandex Takes a Second Data Center Hit in 48 Hours
That's the point. Nuclear weapons don't deter a group like Al Qaeda.
thinkcontext··on Yandex Takes a Second Data Center Hit in 48 Hours
Trump didn't ask Zelensky to stop the strikes because German diesel prices are high. He did it because the US midterm elections are coming up and his party's base are disproportionately harmed by high gas prices.
thinkcontext··on Yandex Takes a Second Data Center Hit in 48 Hours
I don't know what sites you frequent but strikes on distribution centers by both sides has been covered by mainstream US news.

Do the sites you frequent mention that Russia does double tap strikes to kill civilian first responders or that they have stolen thousands of Ukrainian children?

thinkcontext··on Yandex Takes a Second Data Center Hit in 48 Hours
Interesting to see this and the targeting of data centers in the Middle East. Its critical infrastructure and a hit gets the attacker a lot of bang for the buck in terms of economic damage.
thinkcontext··on First enhanced geothermal power plant completed in just 23 months
Except this article telling you that.
thinkcontext··on First enhanced geothermal power plant completed in just 23 months
In theory it could. The advantage of enhanced geothermal is it allows for a much wider variety of sites to be used compared to conventional geothermal. So, it may be possible to create one near an existing district heating system and use the excess heat for it.
thinkcontext··on First enhanced geothermal power plant completed in just 23 months
> There are more than 50+ existing projects using EGS starting from the 1970s! What exactly is the "world's first" here?

First commercial operation with a grid connection. You'll notice that those 50+ are listed under the "research and development" section.

thinkcontext··on World's First enhanced geothermal power plant completed in just 23 months
The new thing is using new-ish fracking drilling techniques to create a geothermal resource. Conventional geothermal relies on finding very specific geology which is why its so rare. Enhanced geothermal can (in theory) work in many more places since it can create the geology needed to produce electricity.
thinkcontext··on First enhanced geothermal power plant completed in just 23 months
Certainly a welcome development. Let's hope this pilot can be repeated and scaled.
thinkcontext··on Beam: Reflection's 501B open-weight model
Musk said under oath that they use distillation for Grok.
thinkcontext··on Opus 5.5 agents discover two room-temperature magnetic semiconductor candidates
That's a fair point to make. It was impressive what they achieved with 90s hardware. Of course OCR to general object recognition is a big gap in how interesting it is.
thinkcontext··on Opus 5.5 agents discover two room-temperature magnetic semiconductor candidates
We didn't have big enough compute and data to do interesting things with them until recently. That changed with ImageNet in 2012

https://www.technologyreview.com/2020/11/03/1011616/ai-godfa...

thinkcontext··on Beam: Reflection's 501B open-weight model
I wonder if that's an indication that they are not distilling which limits how good they can get.
thinkcontext··on Oracle on the hook to pay data centre investors even if site has no electricity
They can be resold, they have great value for anyone wanting to provide their own power to a DC. Demand is so high they might be able to make a profit.
